Firm donates sanitary pads to Lagos schoolgirls

A firm, Clina-Lancet Laboratories Nigeria, has provided students of Queen’s College, Lagos, with sanitary pads and educational materials.
This is said to be part of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility and commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.
SDG Goal 3 aims to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages.”
The firm stated that no fewer than 3,000 sanitary pads were donated to the girls to improve their menstrual hygiene and alleviate the burden of the high cost of sanitary pads.
The Managing Director of Clina-Lancet Laboratories, Nigeria, Dr Olayemi Dawodu, while distributing the pads to the girls on Tuesday in Lagos, said the company was concerned about the lack of access to sanitary pads among girls, leading to unhygienic practices and absenteeism from school during menstruation.
She stressed the importance of menstrual hygiene, urging the private sector and non-governmental organisations to collaborate to make sanitary pads available for school girls in Nigeria.
Dawodu said, “We believe that by working together with NGOs, civil organisations, and private companies, we can ensure all girls have access to menstrual hygiene and essential products.
“Menstrual hygiene is a crucial aspect of a girl’s overall health. Proper hygiene practices can significantly reduce the risk of infections and ensure girls can participate fully in school and daily activities.”
The National Library of Medicine defines menstrual hygiene as the practice of managing menstruation hygienically and safely, using materials that are culturally and socially acceptable, and having access to facilities and services that enable women and girls to change and dispose of their menstrual materials safely and with dignity.
Menstrual hygiene management includes; using clean and absorbent materials to absorb menstrual blood, changing materials regularly, washing hands with soap and water after changing materials, and having access to private and safe facilities for changing and disposal.
The United Nations Children’s Fund states that poor menstrual hygiene can pose physical health risks and has been linked to reproductive and urinary tract infections.
Speaking on the “Pad Up a Girl” campaign, the managing director said it aims to empower girls with knowledge and resources to manage their periods with confidence and dignity.
The programme addressed various aspects of menstrual hygiene, including proper pad usage, hygiene maintenance, and dispelling of stigmas surrounding menstruation.
Giving health talks to the students, the Wellness Occupational Manager for Clina-Lancet Laboratories, Dr Amaka Nwigwe, highlighted the importance of sanitary hygiene.
She, however, said menstrual hygiene goes beyond maintaining personal hygiene or being clean.
“It also involves making sure that the girl child is comfortable and not embarrassed and confident to discuss menstruation and what happens to them, which is why a platform like this is a very laudable project.
“It creates an opportunity for discussions in the open. So, I’m just so glad that we did this today, and I’m sure that the impact that we had today will resonate in years to come”, she explained.
Commanding the company for the gesture, the Principal of Queen’s College, Lagos, Mrs. Oyindamola Obabori, represented by Vice Principal Student Affairs 1, Mrs Adebiyi Titilayo, said, “We are grateful to Clina-lancet Laboratories for bringing this important initiative to our school.
“Equipping our girls with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their periods effectively is essential for their well-being and academic success.”

Presidency slams Obi for criticizing new presidential jet plan
The Presidency has responded to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s criticism of the Federal Government’s plan to buy new aircraft for the presidential fleet, calling his comment “insensitive” and wondering if he would rather have the President’s life jeopardized by flying faulty aircraft.
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said: “Does Peter Obi want the President dead? Is that his wish? Does he want him to continue moving around in a rickety plane and die like the VP of Malawi and Iran President? Let him tell us. This is a basic thing any sane government will do. You can’t toy with your President’s welfare.”

Onanuga added that the current plane was bought over 20 years ago and had developed problems, forcing the President to travel on a commercial airline from Saudi Arabia to the UK. He stated that the National Assembly had recommended replacing the aircraft, and it was not a luxury but a necessity.
It will recalled that Peter Obi had described the plan as “unacceptable” and “insensitive” to the suffering of Nigerians, citing the country’s economic crisis and poverty.
The Presidency, however, dismissed his comments as “unnecessary” and “shameless”.

A statement by the EFCC on Monday via X noted that Jude was docked before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar on two-count charges bordering on impersonation and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N1,100,000 (One Million, One Hundred Thousand Naira).
According to the charge sheet, “Nweke Izuchukwu Jude, sometime in April 2024, at Enugu, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of N1,100,000.00 from one Justin Chidozie Chukwukere when you fraudulently presented yourself as an officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, a pretence you knew to be false.”

Early sexual exposure, multiple partners increase cervical cancer risk

Medical experts said Human Papillomavirus infection, early sexual activity, multiple sexual partners, smoking, and immune system deficiency are risk factors for cervical cancer.
They made this known Tuesday during a Zoom meeting organised by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation Nigeria in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Programme for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria, and the GirlsAct.
The experts, who spoke on the theme, ‘Understanding Cervical Cancer and Its Intersection with HIV,’ urged women to ensure regular cervical cancer screening as a sure way of early detection and successful treatment.
Cervical cancer develops in a woman’s cervix (the entrance to the uterus from the vagina).
According to the World Health Organisation, almost all cervical cancer cases (99 per cent) are linked to infection with high-risk human papillomaviruses, a common virus transmitted through sexual contact.
“Although most infections with HPV resolve spontaneously and cause no symptoms, persistent infection can cause cervical cancer in women. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women,” WHO said.
The United Nations said cervical cancer is the third most common cancer in Nigeria and the second most frequent cause of cancer deaths among women aged between 15 and 44 years.
In 2020, the latest year for which data is available, Nigeria recorded 12,000 new cases and 8,000 deaths from cervical cancer.
Speaking during the meeting, the Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and Cervical Cancer Prevention Programme Advisor with the JHPIEGO, Dr George Ikaraoha said, “The factors contributing to cervical cancer development are Human Papillomavirus infection, early sexual activity, multiple sexual partners, smoking, and immune system deficiency.”
Ikaraoha also said long-term use of oral contraceptives, having many children, socio-economic factors like lack of access to healthcare facilities, poverty, the inability of women and girls to afford healthcare services, lack of education, access to the right information, and cultural beliefs like stigma contribute to cervical cancer.
He advised that regular screening is crucial as it allows for the detection and treatment of precancerous conditions before they develop into cervical cancer.
Ikaraoha said, “Understanding the risk factors and adhering to recommended screening schedules, women can significantly reduce their risk of developing cervical cancer and improve their chances of successful treatment if cancer does occur.”
An Antiretroviral therapy Nurse at the AHF, Omoseke Bamijoko also harped on the importance of early diagnosis.
Bamijoko said cervical cancer can be treated if discovered early.
She said, “Women living with HIV are more prone to cervical cancer and as such should go for screening every three years, while others can be screened every five years.”
She urged women and girls to see a health professional when they see symptoms like unusual bleeding between periods, after menopause or after sexual intercourse, an increase in foul-smelling vaginal discharge, persistent pain in the back, leg, or pelvis, weight loss, fatigue loss of appetite, vaginal discomfort, and swelling in the legs, among others.
In their separate remarks, a senior nursing officer with AHF, Mrs Menakaya Atenchong, and Dr Lois Maji, a Programme Officer with IHVN advised young girls to get screened and vaccinated.
They noted that early detection would not only reduce the burden of cervical cancer in Nigeria but would also prevent genital warts and other genital growths in women and girls.
They also stated that social and economic determinants of the diseases should be addressed to reduce disparities in cervical cancer incidence and improve health outcomes for all women.
On his part, the AHF Nigeria Advocacy and Marketing Manager, Steve Aborisade said cervical cancer and HIV are significant public health issues that disproportionately affect women, particularly in resource-limited settings.
He said the meeting was organised to acquaint participants with information on the relationship between HIV and cervical cancer, discuss preventive measures, and share the latest research, and strategies for effective management and support.
