The command also said 78 others who sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crashes involving 21 vehicles and 128 people, were swiftly conveyed to hospitals across the zone, while 41 other persons were rescued without injuries during the period.
Reviewing activities in the first three days of the command’s special operation for Sallah, which started on Friday covering major routes within its jurisdiction in a statement obtained in Osogbo, Osun State capital, the Acting Zonal Commanding Officer for the Zone, Leye Adegboyega, further said the Corps deployed a total of 3,018 personnel, 57 patrol vehicles, five ambulances and two heavy-duty tow trucks, during the period.
According to him, personnel from the command covered about 65 major routes across the zone daily to ensure good visibility to reduce avoidable speed-related crashes, while standby rescue teams were also stationed across all commands in the zone for quick response to distress calls from accident scenes.
The statement read in part, “The 2024 Eid El Kabir Sallah Special Patrol Operation is scheduled to be held between Friday 14th and Friday 21st June 2024 across the country. Zone RS11 Osogbo of the Corps, which comprises Osun, Ondo and Oyo States, has keyed into the mission of the Operation, which is to ensure free flow of traffic, minimize the occurrence of RTCs, provide prompt rescue services in the event of crashes and ensure timely clearance of obstructions on all major roads and the critical corridors across the 3 states of the Zone during and after the Sallah festivities.
“For the Zone to achieve the mission of the Operation, a total of 3,018 Personnel (comprising 2,155 Regular Marshals and 863 Special Marshals), 57 Patrol Vehicles, 5 Ambulances and 2 Heavy Duty Tow Trucks have been deployed across the component commands. Included in the roads we cover daily are the following Critical Corridors to which we give particular attention: Ibadan-Lagos Expressway, Ibadan-Ife Expressway, Ife-Ilesa Expressway, Ilesa-Ipetujesa-Akure Expressway, Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway, Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway.
“In the first three days of the operation, we have achieved the following: i. “iii. Provision of prompt rescue services for the victims of 13 RTCs which involved 21 vehicles and 128 people, out of which 9 unfortunately lost their lives and 78 others sustained varying degrees of injuries and were swiftly conveyed to hospitals across the Zone where we sustain cordial relationship, for treatment. 41 other persons were rescued alive without injuries and continued their journeys.”
Adegboyega appealed to the general public and all road users to use the roads responsibly and contribute their quota to a reduction in the loss of lives and valuable properties.
Kano Emirate tussle: Federal, Industrial courts lack jurisdiction on chieftaincy matters

Human Rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, on Tuesday, said the Federal High Court and the National Industrial Court have no jurisdiction to determine chieftaincy matters.
Falana, in a statement he personally signed, which was obtained by our correspondent in Abuja, accused both courts of separately conferring, “jurisdiction on themselves to determine chieftaincy matters.”
Falana described both decisions as, “highly erroneous” as they cannot be justified under sections 251 and 254(C) of the Constitution. Adding that both courts conveniently overruled the judgments of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal on the subject matter.
He said, “The intervention of the Federal High Court in the dispute arising from the deposition of Emir Ado Bayero & Co. as well as the restoration of Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is a brazen repudiation of the decision of the Supreme Court in the celebrated case of Tukur v Government of Gongola State (1987) 4 NWLR (117) 517 where it was held that “The question raised in this claim is not a fundamental right question.
“As in the first prayer, the right to be Emir is not guaranteed by the Fundamental Rights provisions of the Constitution and the Federal High Court has no jurisdiction whatever in the matter. The Court of Appeal was, therefore, not in error of law to hold that the Federal High Court has no jurisdiction to grant the two reliefs.
“Since the apex court has said that the right to be an Emir is not a fundamental right under chapter four of the Constitution, the Federal High Court sitting in Kano ought to have declined jurisdiction to continue to entertain the dispute over the chieftaincy matter in Kano. In any case, the allegation of infringement of the fundamental rights of the Applicants is an ancillary claim to the substantive reliefs emanating from the deposition and reinstatement of the embattled emirs.”
In FCMB Plc v Nyama (2014) LPELR-23973 AT 19-20, the Court of Appeal held that: “Now it is settled that where an application is made under the fundamental Right (Enforcement Procedure) Rules, a condition precedent to the exercise of the court’s jurisdiction is that the enforcement of fundamental rights of the securing of enforcement thereof should be the main claim and not the accessory claim. Where the main or principal claim is not the enforcement of fundament right, the jurisdiction of the court cannot be properly exercised under Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules.”
A Federal High Court in Kano last week ruled that it has jurisdiction to hear the human rights violation case filed by the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and senior councillor, Aminu Dan’agundi, following the reinstatement of Emir Muhammad Sanusi II.
The court issued an ex-parte order preventing Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano from reinstating Sanusi until a substantive suit against the reinstatement is resolved.
The order also opposed the abolishment of four emirates—Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano—under a bill previously passed by the state House of Assembly.
Ending his submission, Falana said, “I submit, with profound respect, that section 254(C)(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended has not conferred jurisdiction on the National Industrial Court to hear and determine chieftaincy matters.
“However, a traditional ruler who was deposed by a state governor without fair hearing is not without a legal redress.”
Kwara doctors seek recruitment of more personnel

The Association of Resident Doctors, General Hospital Ilorin, in Kwara State, has appealed to Governor AbdulRaman AbdulRazaq to recruit more medical personnel for the facility.
The association made the call on Tuesday in a Sallah message sent to the governor.
The Resident Doctors, in the statement jointly signed by the President and Secretary of the association, Dr Usman Abubakar and Dr Audu Charles, respectively, drew the attention of the governor to the shortage of medical personnel in the hospital, saying that “there is an acute shortage of medical staff in the hospital, which has hindered services rendered in some departments of the hospital.”
It said, “Since the General Hospital, Ilorin is now a Teaching Hospital, it has become pertinent to address germane issues which will help the Teaching Hospital take off successfully and allow it to have smooth operations for the benefit of all in Kwara.”
The doctors, however, congratulated AbdulRazaq on milestone achievements of the administration, especially on malaria control and passage of the Kwara State Teaching Hospital Bill among other laudable achievements.
“While congratulating you, on these achievements, we want you not to relent, on your commendable efforts to make Kwara a shining star amongst other States in the country,” they said.
The association also pointed out the issue of the Medical Residency Training Act, saying it has come of age to domesticate the Act.
“This will allow the Resident doctors in the State to have better research and training opportunities in order for them to offer the best medical services to the people.
“We know as our leader, you will help look into them as they require very urgent attention.
“The entire members of the Association heartily wish Governor Abdulrahaman Abdrazaq, Barka da Sallah as we celebrate this year’s Eid Adha,” the Association said in the statement.
Recall that the state governor recently signed a bill which upgraded the state General Hospital to Kwara State University Teaching Hospital.

The Chairman of the group, Yusuf Ibrahim, stated this in a statement while felicitating with Muslims on the Eid el-Kabir.
