The Federal Government and African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) have signed a $3.5 billion deal to boost the textile industry and promote the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, among other initiatives in the country.
The Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Doris Uzoka-Anite, disclosed this in a statement on the X platform on Tuesday.
She said the deal was signed with the international financial institution during the 31st Afreximbank Annual Meeting in Nassau, The Bahamas.
The agreement, according to the minister, will help realize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of a diversified and prosperous Nigerian economy.
Uzoka-Anite said: “I am pleased to report that a groundbreaking $3.5 billion MOU agreement between the @TradeInvestNG and @afreximbank was signed at the 31st Afreximbank Annual Meeting in Nassau.
“This landmark agreement is a major step towards fulfilling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for a diversified and prosperous Nigerian economy.”
She revealed that the agreement covers a $3 billion Industrialization Financing Facility aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s journey to becoming a fully industrialized nation, and state-wide investment vehicles/projects to attract more investments to states, among others.
“This collaboration with Afreximbank is set to transform our industrial landscape, create jobs, and drive sustainable economic growth.
“Together, we are paving the way for a brighter and more prosperous Nigeria,” she added.

I’ll resist my supporters’ arrest, Fubara vows
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has assured the people of the state that he will lead the way to ensure that peace continues to prevail while also protecting all his supporters for their stand on the path of truth.
Fubara made the vow while addressing newsmen shortly after rising from a State Security Council meeting with heads of the security agencies at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Tuesday.
This was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Neslon Chukwudi.
The governor emphasised that no grand plan to arrest such patriotic supporters on trumped-up charges will be tolerated.
Fubara stated that there is no extension of tenure of elected local government chairmen, adding that the law is unambiguous, clarifying that the court has also affirmed the position of the law.
He said, “Let me also say this: I’m also aware that there is a grand plan to come and arrest some of our supporters. This time around, you have to pass through me to arrest them because I don’t think there is anything that any of those people following us has done.
“Rather, they are standing on the side of truth. If it will cost us our lives to stand on the part of truth, we will do that. And I will be the one that will lead the course.”
The governor further said, “Let me assure everyone, more especially, the great and peace-loving people of Rivers State: the law is the law. The law has said that there is no extension of tenure.
“The court said so, and whoever is assuring anybody anywhere of whatever, I advise them to desist from it because peace is what we need in this state.
“I assure every one of you that whatever it takes to make sure that we maintain peace and order, we are not going back on that.”
Fubara explained that the security council meeting was called because of the recent threat to the peace of the state by the outgone chairmen of the local government councils.
He added, “You are all aware that the tenure of the council chairmen ended yesterday, 17th June 2024, and today, we have ordered the Heads of Local Government Administration to be in charge while they await further directives.
“It’s really unfortunate that we started hearing some disturbing news from some LGAs of invasion of council secretariats, and it is really unfortunate. So, we have called the security council meeting so that the needful will be done.
“We are also aware that our enemy is also planning a lot of things. But we will not fall into that plot. We will not also allow him or them to destroy the peace that we are enjoying in the state.”
Nigeria extends 2024 licensing bid registration by 10 days
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has extended the deadline for the registration and submission of pre-qualification documents for the 2024 oil block licensing round.
The NUPRC Chief Executive, Mr. Gbenga Komolafe, announced the extension in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said the registration and submission of pre-qualification documents initially scheduled to close on June 25 had been extended by 10 days, and would now close on July 5.

Komolafe added that the data access, data purchase, evaluation, bid preparation, and submission initially scheduled to open on July 4 and close on November 29 would now start on July 8 and close on November 29.
He said all other dates in the published 2024 Licencing Round Schedule remained the same unless otherwise communicated.
He said: “In pursuit of the Commission’s commitment to derive value from the country’s abundant oil and gas reserves and increase production, the Commission has been working assiduously with multi-client companies to undertake more exploratory activities.
“This is to acquire more data to foster and encourage further investment in the Nigerian upstream sector.
Komolafe said the commission had included 17 deep offshore blocks in the 2024 Licensing Round due to additional data acquired in respect to deep offshore blocks.
.“In accordance with the published guidelines, we had earlier indicated that some of the assets on offer should be applied for as clusters, namely: PPL 300-CS & PPL 301-CS, PPL 2000 and PPL 2001.
“Bidders are hereby advised to bid for those blocks as clusters or as single units; it is optional,” the NUPRC chief stated.

Motorcycle rider stabs peacemaker to death in Lagos
The Lagos State Police Command says a private security guard, Yusuf Akadogo, has lost his life after being allegedly stabbed during a minor altercation.
Confirming the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the security guard was attacked by an Okada rider, currently at large.
Hundeyin stated that the incident occurred on Thursday at the Idi-Araba area of the state.
“On that fateful day, around 9:20 p.m., the police received a distress call from a concerned community member regarding a disturbance at Igbira Road, Idi-Araba,” Hundeyin said.
He also said that police operatives swiftly moved to the scene where an eyewitness provided an account of the events.
According to the witness, the security guard intervened in a minor altercation between the Okada rider and another individual.
“Unexpectedly, the motorcycle rider, whose identity is withheld, allegedly turned his aggression towards the security guard and stabbed him in the stomach with a knife.
“The victim was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, for urgent medical attention but unfortunately, succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
“The suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack, and the area is currently under surveillance as efforts to apprehend him are ongoing,” he said.
In a separate incident, Hundeyin said that police had arrested four men who allegedly broke into a musical instrument warehouse in the Ikota area of the state.
The spokesperson said that the suspects were arrested on June 11, at about 4.30 p.m. following a reported case of theft by the owner of a warehouse.
Hundeyin said that the police had received a report from Idi-Oro Mushin, that two young men (names withheld), were caught with two big speakers allegedly stolen from the warehouse.
Hundeyin said that the businessman had reportedly said goods worth millions of Naira had been stolen from the warehouse.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that a man called Pastor, now at large, conspired with the suspects on June 10, at about 11.30 p.m.
“They had driven into a warehouse in the Okota area with a mini truck vehicle with which they carted away their loot.
“The 25-year-old security man and 33-year-old supervisor in possession of the warehouse keys were later arrested, ” he said.
Hundeyin, however, said that the suspected Pastor, who resides in Oshodi, fled before the arrival of the police.
He said that efforts were on to apprehend the suspect and recover the stolen items, while investigations into both incidents continue.

FUOYE student arrested for alleged rape of male colleague
A 400-level student at Federal University Oye Ekiti in Ekiti State has been arrested by police for allegedly raping a male colleague.
A viral video on Tuesday shows the accused being taken away by police amidst a crowd.
The National Association of Ondo State Students and the FUOYE Student Union have issued statements distancing themselves from the accused, clarifying that he is not a member or affiliate of their organizations.
Both statements emphasize their commitment to a safe and inclusive environment and promise to take necessary actions to ensure justice is served
National Association of Ondo state students in a statement said, “We want to clarify that the individual Oni Olalekan popularly known as Asiwaju accused of sexual assault and who has publicly denounced our association on Monday 10th of June 2024, is not a member, an executive or appointee of our association.
“We would like to clarify that this individual is not a member of our association nor has any affiliation with us.
“It is important to ensure that this distinction is clear to the general public and that any misinformation is addressed promptly.
“We take these matters very seriously and stand for a safe and inclusive environment for all our members. If you have any concerns or information that you think we should be aware of, please do not hesitate to reach out to the association board.
“Let’s continue to uphold our values and principles as we strive for a respectful and supportive community within our association.”

Speaking to our reporter in a telephone interview on Tuesday, the Ekiti State Police Public Relations Officer, Abutu Sunday, confirmed the arrest and ongoing investigation, stating that the suspect is denying the allegations.
Abutu Sunday said, “Investigation has commenced, the suspect has been arrested and investigations have commenced because he is denying why the complainant is alleging, so we will see the result of the investigation.”
Gunmen kill ticket collector in Ekiti
Gunmen on Tuesday killed a ticket collector in Ekiti State.
Eyewitnesses told journalists that the man was issuing tickets to commercial motorcyclists near the Oke Isa Roundabout in Ado-Ekiti when he was shot dead by the assailants.
The hoodlums fled from the scene after the incident.

Police arrest 3 suspected kidnappers in Benue
Police operatives in Benue have arrested three suspected kidnappers in Otukpo local government area of the state.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Sewuese Anene, confirmed the development to journalists on Tuesday in Makurdi.
Anene said the suspects were arrested at a motor park in Otukpo on Monday.
Eyewitnesses said the suspects were intercepted early Monday at a motor park while attempting to board a vehicle to Makurdi.
The suspects allegedly received ransom from their victims and were on their way to Makurdi, the state capital, when they were arrested.

Police raid IPOB camp in Anambra, arrest four
The Anambra State Police Command said it has raided a camp belonging to members of the Indigenous People of Biafra and Eastern Security Network located in Ufuma, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state.
A statement on Tuesday by the state police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, also noted that four suspects were arrested.
Ikenga said the police-led Joint Security Force in Aguata carried out the operation following information received over time of planned attacks on security agents and innocent citizens by the dreaded group.
He said, “The Police-led Joint Security Force in Aguata on 17/6/2024 intercepted four suspected ESN militia in Ufuma, Orumba North LGA in Anambra State. The arrest is following information received over time of planned attacks on security agents and innocent citizens by the dreaded group.
“Among the four suspects arrested is one Maduabuchi Nwafor a.k.a. Omenkpo ‘M’ aged 32 years, a native of Ufuma. He has been identified as one of the native doctors who prepares criminal charms for the group and uses his shrine for initiation ceremonies and meeting points for the criminals.
“Also, one of the suspects’ name withheld who is already assisting the police with information confessed to be one of the gunmen dispatched by the group to enforce the illegal sit-at-home on May 30, 2024.”
He added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Nnaghe Itam, has ordered investigations to be widened and deepened to identify hideouts of the insurgents seeking to “destabilise and truncate development in the state”.
“The CP assured Ndi Anambra that the police command under his watch will continue to serve the people selflessly and will jealously protect the sources of its information to protect informers from harm,” the statement added.
