Osimhen takes CAF award to his primary school in Lagos

Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, recently visited his alma mater, Olusosun Primary School, in the Oregun area of Lagos State, taking his CAF award with him.

Osimhen, in December 2023, won the CAF 2023 Men’s Player of the Year award, becoming the first Nigerian to win the award since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.

His recent visit to the school was disclosed on X.com by a photojournalist, Sulaiman Adebayo, popularly called Pooja.

The caption read, “Victor Osimhen takes his CAF Award to Olusosun Primary School, Ojota, where it all started with street coaches and friends.”

In June 2023, Osimhen had similarly visited the primary school.

He reportedly went to his former classroom, saw his old teacher, and took pictures with the students at the school.

Insecurity: Kogi govt bans processions in Koton Karfe

The Kogi State government has banned traditional processions in the Koton Kafe area of the state capital of the state for security reasons.
The state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, announced the ban in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lokoja.
Fanwo said security reports indicated that all was not well in the Koton Kafe community following alleged plans by some people to forment trouble in the area.
He said the ban was aimed at maintaining peace in Koton karfe and its environs.
“The proactive ban is aimed at curbing plans by some elements in the area to disturb the peace of the ancient town.

“Governor Usman Ododo has reiterated his administration’s commitment to peaceful co-existence among all Koton karfe people.
“He will always leave his doors open to listen to complaints and grievances rather than resort to violence,” the commissioner stated.
Fanwo urged law enforcement agents to enforce the ban in accordance with the laws of the land.
Former Governor Yahaya Bello on January 8 removed Alhaji Abdulrazaq Isah-Koto as the Ohimege-Igu Koton-Karfe.
Isah-Koto was also the Chairman, Lokoja/ Kogi local government area traditional council.
The monarch, who was banished to Rijau local government area of Niger State, was replaced with Alhaji Saidu Akawu-Salihu.

FERMA clears drainages, repairs on Abuja-Keffi highway

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency on Tuesday commenced the removal of silts and construction of failed drainages along the popular Abuja-Mararaba-Keffi highway.

The drainage clearing exercise, which started from Km 9 along Mararaba market, saw several FERMA officials opening up the waterways to pack out silts while the direct labour workers made a spirited effort to decongest the traffic.

On the Masaka axis of the Abuja-Keffi road, there were massive remedial works on the failed drains, the Ado bridge and the setback separating the dual carriage roads.

Addressing newsmen, FERMA roads maintenance engineer in charge of the Federal Capital Territory, Martin Eze, disclosed that the exercise was a continuation of the ‘Operation desilting of waterways’ programme flagged off two weeks ago by FERMA Managing Director, Dr Chukwuemeka Agbasi.

Eze, who admitted that FERMA’s biggest challenge was managing humans, appealed to traders and residents staying close to the drainages to desist from throwing refuse into the hydraulic structures.

He said, “This is a continuation of the programme recently launched by our MD, Dr Emeka Agbasi. We are currently at Km 9 along the Mararaba-Keffi Road. The essence is to make sure that all waterways, drainages and hydraulic structures are open and free for water to flow during this rainy season.

“That way, it will make our roads last longer. We appeal to road users, especially people who stay close to the drainage facilities not to pour refuse into them. Some people will wait for the rain to start to pour their refuse into the hydraulic structure thereby blocking the waterways.

“We frown at this and therefore call on Nigerians, especially road users and people close to these structures not to abuse them.”

When asked to address the fear that some traders may be displaced as a result of the ongoing exercise, the FERMA maintenance officer dismissed the insinuation.

According to him, the exercise is solely to clear the waterways.

“The fear of displacement does not arise as we are not reconstructing the roads or expanding them. We are only maintaining the existing roads. So it won’t affect anybody for now.

“It is a continuous process. We carried out a similar one in December last year until people came again to silt the drains. I think one of the major challenges we have is managing the people and their activities. But I can assure you this exercise will be completed before the rainy season takes over,” he stated.

There was pandemonium at Niger Street market in Onitsha, on Tuesday, following a clash between operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra State Brigade and some traders using umbrellas as shelter after the Anambra state government demolished their shops.

The operatives of the OCHA brigade had invaded the Ndende land located along Niger Street in Onitsha South LGA, where the state government through the Onitsha South authority destroyed over 863 shops and 27 sand pits belonging to Lake Petroleum Limited, and its inhabitants.

The action of the OCHA brigade was contrary to an interim injunction restraining the Anambra State Government, the Attorney General of Anambra State, Emeka Orji (Chairman, Caretaker Committee Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State) and Inspector General of Police), from encroaching the said location.

Also destroyed were goods including food, drinks and other articles of trade and umbrellas of the traders which resulted in a clash between them and the OCHA Brigade operatives, a task force of the Anambra state government.

However, but for the timely intervention of the policemen from Fegge Police Station, Onitsha, the clash would have been bloody as the traders involved were said to be still nursing their wounds over the destruction of their shops and goods during the demolition by Onitsha South Local Government Authorities.

One of the many angry traders who spoke to journalists on behalf of the affected traders, Nzube Okoye, said that they have been managing to feed and take care of their families while waiting for the determination of the Suit by their landlord, Lake Petroleum Limited against Anambra State government over their attempted forceful ejection from the land by the state government through the Onitsha South Local Government authority.

Okoye said, “We are not occupying here illegally, we are permitted by the order of the court, which is an Order of Interim Injunction secured by our landlord Lake Petroleum Limited, against the Anambra State Government, the Attorney General of Anambra State, Emeka Orji, who is the Chairman Caretaker Committee Onitsha South Local Government Area, Anambra State and the Inspector General of Police.

“Our landlord has the Certificate of Occupancy of the land and had secured an Interim Injunction which must be respected, against the Anambra State government over our stay here. We expect the State Government and its agents like OCHA Brigade to respect the court order, but they won’t, everything they have been doing here since the interim order was secured has all been in breach of the court order.

“The state government should call the men of OCHA Brigade to order, they are embarrassing the government and disobeying a valid Order of the Federal High Court Awka with the Suit No: FHC /AWK/ CS/75/2024. We have the Interim Injunction restraining the government and its agents from disturbing us here.”

Recall that Lake Petroleum Limited had through its lawyer, Gerald Ezeuko, SAN, secured an Order of Interim Injunction from the Federal High Court Awka, with the Suit No: FHC /AWK/ CS/75/2024, restraining the Anambra State Government, the Attorney General of Anambra State, Emeka Orji (Chairman Caretaker Committee Onitsha South Local Government Area of Anambra State and Inspector General of Police) who are the Respondents in the Suit, their agents, privies, cronies from further invasion, entering, demolition and sealing off and stationing armed thugs and Policemen on the landed property known as Ndende Land situate along Niger Street Onitsha South Local Government Area Anambra State covered by Building Certificate of Occupancy issued in the name of Lake Petroleum Limited, the Applicant.

The order also prohibited the Respondents from further denying the Applicant, its staff and tenants access or entry into the said land to carry out their daily legitimate businesses pending the determination of the Substantive Motion for Enforcement of the Applicant’s Fundamental Right to own immovable property in Nigeria.

Enugu gov’s wife unveils health insurance scheme for pregnant women

The wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, on Tuesday, unveiled a health insurance scheme, ‘Mama Care Initiative’ to address maternal and infant mortality in the state.

So far, she has enrolled about 1,701 pregnant women in a one-year health insurance programme.

Mbah said, “The initiative, in partnership with the Custos Care Foundation, aims to reduce maternal and infant mortality in the state by providing comprehensive healthcare services, including antenatal care, safe delivery, and postnatal care.”

Beneficiaries also received financial support and foodstuffs, including 1,701 bags of rice, to support their nutritional needs.

Throwing more light on the initiative, Mbah said, “Too often, the joy of pregnancy is overshadowed by the fear and uncertainty brought about by financial constraints, leading many women to seek the services of traditional birth attendants. While these attendants have served their communities for generations, the realities of modern healthcare necessitate a shift towards facilities, equipped to handle the complexities of childbirth.

“Through the Mama Care Initiative, we are taking decisive action to bridge this gap by paying for a one-year health insurance premium for 1,701 pregnant women across our 17 local government areas, ensuring that 100 women from each L.G.A will have access to comprehensive healthcare services, which includes not only antenatal care but also the safe and supervised conditions necessary for delivery in our hospitals and healthcare centres.

“Our vision is to reduce maternal and infant mortality in our state significantly. It is unacceptable that in this era, women should lose their lives giving birth or that infants should not survive their first days due to preventable complications.

“We aim to provide our mothers with the security and support they need to bring new life into the world safety and healthily. This commitment is to the welfare and healthcare of our mothers and children in Enugu State.

“The Mama Care Initiative is designed to provide essential services such as prenatal and postnatal care, nutritional support, health education, and access to medical resources. It will bring essential medical services directly to our communities, ensuring that even the most remote areas benefit from the expertise and care of our dedicated healthcare professionals.”

She added, “By combining the provision of health insurance with proactive medical outreach, we are creating a robust support system for our expectant mothers.

“It is a health intervention and pledge of support to every woman in Enugu State, a promise that we see you, hear you, and are committed to standing by you through one of the most critical phases of your life.

“We encourage all our pregnant mothers to utilize these services, to attend their antenatal appointments diligently, take your routine drugs religiously and to choose hospitals or healthcare centres for childbirth. Your health and the health of your baby are paramount.

“We understand the importance of proper nutrition for both mother and child, and we are here to ensure that you have the resources needed to thrive.”

The state Commissioner for Health, Prof Emmanuel Obi, described the initiative as a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to improve healthcare services, particularly for pregnant women and newborns.

The programme has been hailed as a game-changer by beneficiaries, who expressed gratitude for the support and care they will receive during pregnancy and childbirth.

Charge 23 former council chairmen for treason, lawmakers tell Fubara

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives under the aegis of G-60, on Tuesday, demanded the trial of 23 former local government chairmen in Rivers State loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, for alleged treason.

The group led by the lawmaker representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency in Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, made the demand at a press conference held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

The lawmakers accused the former council bosses of forcefully trying to retain their seats after the constitutional expiration of their three years in office.

They also called on the Rivers state government to immediately prepare treason charges against the local government chairmen and their sponsors over the committal of the alleged act.

In attendance at the press conference were Aliyu Mustapha (PDP, Kaduna), Matthew Nwogu (LP, Imo) and Midaila Usman(PDP, Borno).

The lawmakers accused the former council chairmen of breaching the provisions of section 37 (1) of the Criminal Code Act, section 39 of the Nigeria Police Act, section 12 of the Criminal Procedure Code, section 23 of the Criminal Procedure Code and section 1 (2) of the constitution which frowns at anybody or group of persons that attempts to unlawfully occupy position of power in the country or forcefully attempt to take over government in any part of Nigeria.

This is as the lawmakers called on the judiciary to remain vigilant in curbing the activities of persons desperate to take over institutions of governance in Rivers State or any part of the country.

They also frowned at what they referred to as attempted treason organized by the former local government chairmen who wanted to use magistrates/judges from neighbouring states to conduct a kangaroo swearing-in ceremony around 5 am on Tuesday “Despite the fact that their tenure expired on 17th of this month.

“We applaud Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the citizenry in Rivers state for resisting the attempt by disgruntled elements to take over the administration of local government councils in breach of the law.

“We salute the courage of the Rivers state People who came out boldly to protect the local government and foil the attempt to unlawfully seize the institution of governance by the former chairmen.

“This heroic action is in line with section 20 of the administration of the Criminal Justice Act that empowers citizens to arrest and foil any criminal act being committed in their presence,” Ugochinyere said

Continuing, Ugochinyere noted that “Section 39 of the Nigeria Police Act of 2020 states that “A private person may arrest a suspect in Nigeria who, in his presence, commits an offence or whom he reasonably suspects of having committed an offence for which the police is entitled to arrest without a warrant”.

“Section 37 Criminal Code Act (1) provides that “Any person who levies war against the State, in order to intimidate or overawe the President or the Governor of a State, is guilty of treason, and is liable to the punishment of death.

“(2) Any person conspiring with any person, either within or without Nigeria, to levy war against the State with intent to cause such levying of war as would be treason if committed by a citizen of Nigeria, is guilty of treason and is liable to the punishment of death:

“Provided that nothing in this section shall prevent any act from being treason which is so by the laws of England as in force in Nigeria.”

The Ugochinyere-led group commended Gov Fubara for being democratic enough to have allowed the former chairmen to complete their three-year tenure without any disruption “Despite the provocative acts carried against him in the last few months.”

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has said that his administration was poised at making the Ojude Oba festival a global event.
The governor who stated this on Tuesday at the 2024 Ojude Oba Festival held at the Ojude Oba Pavilion in Ijebu-Ode, said the annual event has grown from a mere gathering of Ijebu people to felicitate the Awujale to an event that attract both national and global audience.
According to the governor, the festival, which has become a tourist attraction, symbolizes and reflects the collective unity of the people known for hard work, perseverance, and industry.
He said: “Ojude Oba festival is not only a cultural heritage for the indigenes of Ijebuland and has now become a significant event that attracts local and foreign tourists to Ogun State, showcasing our hospitality and enviable tradition of Ijebuland to the national and global audience.
“This festival serves as a symbol of our unity, tourism and a rallying point to all the Ijebu sons and daughters to celebrate the life and times of our tradition, our culture, and our revered monarch.
“It has become a catalyst for development of Ijebuland, this undoubtedly underscores the importance of preserving our traditions for future generations.
“By standing for unity and harmony, we elevate our community and set an example for others to follow. The essence of unity and harmony in Ijebuland can be seen willingly in cultural events like this festival.

The event, Prince Abiodun observed, creates opportunities for advancement and brought about the socio-economic development not only to the axis but the state as a whole.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) claimed on Tuesday troops of Operation Hadarin Daji have killed 80 terrorists in recent air strikes at Gidan Kare Village of Ruwan Godiya Ward in Faskare Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, AVM Edward Gabkwet, said in a statement on Monday in Abuja that the air component of Operation Hadarin Daji killed the terrorists and burnt more than 45 motorcycles in the operation carried out on the night of June 15.
He said the air strikes followed intelligence that terrorists numbering over 100 had set ablaze houses at a settlement about five kilometers away from Gidan Kare Village.
The spokesman said: “Overhead the village at about 8.30 p.m., several houses were observed to be on fire with the entire village in pandemonium.
“Moments later, 12 motorcycles were seen departing the village and trailed along a footpath out of the village to a location near Gidan Kare Village and Kuka Shidda Camp where they joined a large number of their cohorts.
“Other terrorists were also observed arriving at the location from different directions, an indication that the location was a mass up point with the terrorists likely planning to further attack nearby villages.
“Having been presented such a rare opportunity, authorization was sought, obtained and the location was immediately struck at exactly 9:40 p.m., with over 80 terrorists confirmed eliminated and about 45 motorcycles burnt down while few surviving terrorists were observed fleeing or limping off.
“Further intelligence received after the strike also revealed that the terrorists were closely linked with notorious terrorist kingpin, Yusuf Yellow and his close associate Rabe Imani.
“These strikes, along with others before now, have no doubt disrupted terrorists’ activities in the area.”

Former Rivers LGA chairman insists on tenure elongation

The former chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, Samuel Nwanosike, has insisted on tenure elongation for LGA chairmen in the state.
Earlier on Tuesday, Nwanosike took over the entrance to the council secretariat in Isiokpo.
Despite his tenure as LGA chairman having elapsed, Nwanosike insists on maintaining his position until the Appeal Court issues a ruling.
Nwanosike claims that the appellate court had directed that the status quo be maintained pending the hearing of the case between Martins Amaewhule and others versus factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Victor Oko-Jumbo.
TVN learnt that the former council chairman, however, left the council premises, following a directive from the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, that the Ikwerre LGA Council should be sealed.
The tenure of the LGA chairmen ended on Monday, June 17, 2024.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in accordance with the law and the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, directed that all Heads of Local Government Administration in the state’s 23 LGAs take charge of the councils starting from Tuesday, June 18, 2024, to ensure that the administrative vacuum left by the departing LGA chairmen is promptly filled.
The former LGA chairmen, who are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, had their tenure extended by an amended Local Government Law Number 5 of 2018 by the faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly headed by Amaewhule.
However, the extension was nullified by a Rivers State High Court ruling on May 21, 2024, which declared the Local Government Law No. 2 of 2024 as inconsistent with the 1999 Constitution.

Lagos PDP recommends Bode George’s suspension

Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State has recommended Chief Olabode George for suspension over his alleged anti-party spanning two decades.

Bode George, a Board of Trustees member of the National Working Committee of the party was voted for suspension for deliberately causing disaffection within the party that led to the party losing power in Lagos State.

Also, a PDP chieftain and former Chairman of the party in the state, Otunba Segun Adewale, has affirmed his membership and loyalty to the party.

Adewale, popularly known as Aeroland, stated this in a statement he signed and sent to According Online on Tuesday in Lagos.

Reacting to his alleged suspension from the PDP, he stated that he had never been suspended by any leader in the party, adding that the rumours of his suspension were spread by mischief makers.

He described the recent attempt to suspend him through the Alimosho Local Government chapter of the party as a diversionary move fueled by PDP BoT member Chief Olabode George so as to debar further enquiry about how he (Bode George) had allegedly trade-off the party’s political fortune over the years.

According to Adewale, a general assembly meeting of Alimosho PDP led by the acting chairman, Mrs. Esther Adeyemi, was held on June 15, 2024, to review recent happenings in the party.

At a meeting of Alimosho PDP, Adeyemi, said, “There is no crisis in Alimosho PDP and that Otunba Segun Adewale (Aeroland) has no problem with anyone except those conniving with those who worked against the party in the last election.

“That Chief Olabode George’s attempt to instigate crisis in the party by using associates of Segun Adewale to attack him is highly condemnable.

“Chief Olabode George has done severe damage to the reputation and efforts of the party and well-meaning members of the party through his anti-party activities spanning over two decades,” said the party.

The party, however, noted that the purported suspension of Segun Adewale on the instruction of Bode George by a few excos in Alimosho was illegal.

“The suspension of a member of the party can only be done at the ward level; the suspended exco members have no powers to suspend any member of the party because they are technically not members of the party while they are on suspension.”

PDP members expressed the loss of confidence in the leadership of Olabode George and passed a vote of no confidence on him, and the assembly moved that the party should suspend Olabode George for his anti-party activities having caused irreparable damage to the fortunes of the party in the past.

The statement further added, “The purported suspension of Segun Adewale on the instruction of Bode George by a few excos in Alimosho is illegal for the following reasons: 1. The suspension of a member of the party can only be done at the ward level. 2. The suspended exco members have no power to suspend any member of the party because they are technically not members of the party while they are on suspension.

“Members of the assembly have lost confidence in the leadership of Chief Olabode George and therefore passed a vote of no confidence on him. The assembly moved that the party should suspend Chief Olabode George for his anti-party activities, having caused irreparable damage to the fortunes of the party in the past.

“The house unanimously passed a vote of no confidence on Chief Olabode George, and it was forwarded to the party to suspend him. The assembly noted that despite the pending court case for the party to suspend him for his anti-party activities, the resolution was a genuine ground to suspend him immediately.”

The meeting was attended by ward chairmen, LG excos and stalwarts of the party in the state.

Adewale said unless these leaders changed their ways, it would be difficult for PDP to defeat the ruling APC in the state.

“How Lagos PDP leadership mismanage election funds each election year will not allow the party to win elections in the state. This happens every election year.

“It happens every four years. One of the 2023 general elections was higher.

“Out of all the money released to Lagos PDP to prosecute the 2023 election, less than 50 per cent got to the state and the party foot soldiers”, he said.
