Trabzonspor dream Onuachu-Nwakaeme strike force

0

Trabzonspor are planning a Super Eagles strike force of Paul Onuachu and Anthony Nwakaeme for next season as they aim to win the Turkish Super Lig crown again.

They last won the league in the 2021/2022 season.

This comes after the Turkish Super Lig club signed the Nigerian striker, a free agent, for the second time in his career.

Trabzonspor will feature in next season’s UEFA Europa League after they placed third in the Turkish top league.

The seven-time Turkish champions have already convinced Nwakaeme to return to the club he made his name and they hope they could also get Onuachu to at least extend his loan spell by another season.

Last season, giant centre-forward Onuachu netted 15 goals for Trabzonspor on loan from English club Southampton.

Cult hero Nwakaeme said he is happy to return from Saudi Arabia because of the great plans the club have for the coming campaign.

He also saluted the fans of the club, thanking them for their undying support and describing them as “family.”

During his first spell at the club, Nwakaeme helped the club win the 2021/22 Turkish league title. He left the club for Saudi Arabia club, Al Fayhaz, on a free transfer in 2022.

There’s the possibility of Nwakaeme teaming up in attack with countryman Onuachu, who sources say is not keen to return to parent club Southampton after the completion of his loan deal with Tranzonspor.

Okereke set for Cremonese return after Torino loan deal

0

Nigerian striker David Okereke will return to his parent club, Cremonese, for next season after Torino decided to not activate the option to buy him permanently.

The former Nigeria U-23 forward joined Torino in the winter transfer window on a loan deal that included a purchase option.

Unfortunately, Okereke failed to impress with the Turin-based side, where he did not score or assist in 248 minutes of action spread across nine matches, three of which he started.

The deadline for activating the purchase clause in the five-month loan agreement expired on June 14, and il Toro chose not to exercise this option.

The club were reportedly underwhelmed by his performance and decided to let him leave instead of tying him to a permanent deal.

Cremonese, competing in Serie B, missed the opportunity to make an immediate return to Serie A after being defeated by Venezia on aggregate in the Serie B playoff final on 2 June.

Sources close to Okereke told Afrik-Foot that he is not inclined to play in Serie B and is considering a return to Belgium, where he has attracted interest. Additionally, Turkish club Besiktas is reportedly interested in the 26-year-old striker.

Since joining Cremonese from Club Brugge in the summer of 2022, Okereke has scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 57 appearances across all competitions. Despite his disappointing stint at Torino, his overall record with Cremonese highlights his potential as a valuable player.

Ex-champion Parker wants Joshua rematch

0

Joseph Parker is aiming for a rematch with Anthony Joshua.

The New Zealander lost his WBO heavyweight belt to Joshua back in 2018, but both of them have mounted comebacks after career setbacks.

Joshua has three wins in a row after twin defeats to Oleksandr Usyk, while Parker has five consecutive victories after a 2022 defeat to Joe Joyce.

His last win came against Zhilei Zhang in March this year, and speaking to Sky Sports, he discussed his good form.

He said: “I’ve been boxing 11 to 12 years and I’ve found what works for me, the formula I’ve got, Andy Lee head trainer, George Lockhart and the work that we’ve been doing together.

“It’s been a grind ever since we’ve linked up the three of us. But everything is working very well and whatever we’re doing we want to keep it up.”

Discussing a rematch with Joshua, he explained: “There’s a lot of people that want to fight Anthony Joshua. I feel like with what I’ve done I can be in a position to fight him.

“To be honest, it’s not really about what I want and what he wants. It’s what everyone else wants and a lot of fights are happening in Saudi Arabia.

“With the belts all being (held by the) undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, there’s a rematch clause in place, but again these things may or may not happen.

“You never know how things are going to unfold. So we’ll see. We’ll see what happens. But you’ve got Anthony Joshua… I let whatever happens happen and whatever fights they lock, they lock in and I’m ready for whoever.”

One arrested for vandalising barricade in Lagos

0

Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, on Wednesday, said they arrested a man (identity undisclosed) for allegedly vandalising iron barricades along the Odo Iya Alaro area of the state.

The ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Kunle Adesina, in a statement made available to According Metro, disclosed that the suspect was arrested on Saturday while vandalising the iron reinforcement that served as a barricade between the Ogudu Garden Valley Scheme and the System One Channel in the area.

He added that upon interrogation, the suspect confessed that he often sold vandalised items to mobile scrap buyers.

Adesina said, “Another vandal was on Saturday apprehended at Ogudu while vandalising the iron reinforcement in the concrete barrier that demarcates the Ogudu Garden Valley scheme from System One Channel (Odo Iya Alaro).

“The suspect confessed that he had engaged in the act once alongside some accomplices who are on the run.

“He stated that he usually sold the vandalised iron at a giveaway amount to mobile scrap buyers.”

The Public Affairs director added that the suspect had been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

“He has been handed over to officers of Ojota Police Station for further interrogation and prosecution.”

Reacting to the arrest, the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, charged residents of the state to take ownership of public infrastructure to deter criminal elements from vandalising public property.

The commissioner stressed that the vandalised barrier was an important infrastructure in the state drainage system while emphasising that vandals would not go unpunished.

“The concrete barrier which demarcates the Ogudu Garden Valley scheme from System One Channel (Odo Iya Alaro) was constructed in 2011 and is a vital infrastructure for the state drainage system.

“It is only when residents take direct ownership that such criminally minded people in society will be kept at bay and not allowed to destroy multi-million naira infrastructure that serves the majority.

“The full force of the law will always be applied to those caught vandalising public infrastructure,” Wahab said.

According Metro reported on May 15 that the Lagos State Government arrested one Abba Mohammed for allegedly vandalising and stealing iron from concrete barriers in the Odo Iya Alaro area.

The government had also vowed that it would prosecute anyone caught vandalising public assets.

Adesina noted that the suspect was arrested in the early hours of the day following an intelligence report from a member of the public.

He added that the 24-year-old Mohammed, alongside two others who fled the scene, broke down the concrete barriers and extracted the iron.

Local palm oil production can save Nigeria $600m annually – NPPAN

0

The National Palm Produce Association of Nigeria has revealed that the country could save $600m annually by investing in palm oil production.

According to the President of NPPAN, Alphonsus Inyang, Nigeria’s current reliance on palm oil imports has created a substantial financial drain that could otherwise be mitigated by revitalising the domestic palm oil sector, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

“Nigeria spends $600m on palm oil importation annually. The money could be saved and injected into the economy if the palm oil sub-sector was given due attention by successive governments,” he said.

Historically, Nigeria was a dominant force in palm oil production, leading the global market in the 1960s with over 60 per cent of the world’s palm oil.

He stated that due to neglect and lack of strategic investment in the sector by successive governments, Nigeria’s production capacity had dwindled, adding that the country ranked fifth globally in palm oil production, lagging behind Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Colombia.

According to Inyang, Nigeria currently consumes approximately three million metric tons of palm oil annually while producing less than half of this demand domestically.

He proposed a comprehensive strategy to revitalise the sector through the National Oil Palm Strategy Development Plan, stating that the plan aimed to develop 250,000 hectares of oil palm plantations annually, which could bridge the deficit in production within four years.

“At the moment, the country occupies the fifth position in the league of palm oil-producing countries after Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Colombia.

“Nigeria may even lose the position to smaller countries who are investing heavily in the sector. Indonesia occupies the first position, producing 50 million metric tons, Malaysia second with 19 million metric tons, Thailand 3.28 million and Colombia 1.9 million metric tons,” Inyang posited.

He underscored the importance of government support in providing essential inputs, such as seedlings, fertilisers, logistics, and implements to achieve this ambitious goal.

The implementation of this plan, according to Inyang, not only promises to meet domestic demand but also to position Nigeria as a competitive player in the global palm oil market once again.

In response to those challenges, the NPPAN president called on the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to prioritise and support local palm oil producers.

Inyang stressed that with the necessary governmental assistance, including policy frameworks and financial incentives, Nigeria has the potential to not only meet its domestic demand but also become a net exporter of palm oil.

This transformation, he believed, would not only create economic opportunities and reduce dependency on imports but also foster agricultural innovation and employment across the country.

“Our members can plant up to 250,000 hectares per year through the association’s National Oil Palm Strategy Development Plan; all we want are inputs. The government does not need to give and develop land for us, we need seedlings, fertilisers, logistics and implements to close this gap within four years. We will also create new millionaires in 28 states of the federation,” he stated.

Bank audit executives urged to be compassionate

0

The Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Ltd, Dalu Ajene, has urged bank audit executives to exercise empathy when carrying out their duties.

This call was made at the 58th quarterly general meeting of the Association of Chief Audit Executives of Banks in Nigeria, themed ‘Being a Human Auditor in a Challenging Environment,’ which was held in Lagos recently.

ACAEBIN is the umbrella body for bank audit executives. It is a sub-committee of the Bankers’ Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Ajene in his keynote address said that the theme of the meeting was timely given that rapid technological changes, economic uncertainties, and evolving regulatory landscapes mark the current phase of life.

The Standard Chartered Bank boss pointed out that the role of an auditor had always been complex, as it requires not only technical proficiency and an unwavering commitment to ethical standards on the part of practitioners of the profession but also that they could navigate the human aspects of their work.

“You must understand that behind every transaction, every financial statement, and every compliance check, there are people—people whose lives and livelihoods depend on your diligence, transparency, accountability and integrity. In doing so, you safeguard not only the assets of your banks but also the trust placed in us by our stakeholders, customers, and the broader community. However, beyond the technicalities and regulatory requirements, there lies an essential truth: we are humans auditing for humans.

“Being a human auditor means embracing the essence of empathy and ethical responsibility. It involves recognising the pressures and challenges faced by your colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders. It means fostering an environment where open communication, mutual respect, and professional integrity are paramount.

“In doing so, you build trust, not just in your reports and audits, but in the very institutions you serve. You must therefore acknowledge the inherent challenges that come with the audit profession and the broader environment you operate. It requires you to exercise not just your analytical acumen but also your emotional intelligence,” he explained.

In his welcome address, ACAEBIN Chairman, Prince Akamadu, said the meeting was an opportunity for members of the association to reflect on and explore how they could continue to be effective auditors while maintaining their humanity.

“Being a human auditor means balancing the rigours of our profession with empathy, ethical judgment, and a commitment to the greater good. It involves understanding the broader impact of our work on people, organizations, and society,” Akamadu declared.

The Director Of Internal Audit Practice at PwC, Saheed Bashiru, highlighted how auditors could identify and respond to emerging risks in a challenging environment.

“As auditors, the leading practices for identifying emerging risks are building emerging risk awareness, documentation of each process, responding, monitoring, and reporting risks in a challenging environment,” he averred.

0

The Ondo State Security Network Agency also known as Amotekun Corps on Wednesday said it had prosecuted about 600 suspected criminals in court between January and June this year.

The commander of the Amotekun in the state, Akogun Adeleye, disclosed this during the parade of another 48 suspected criminals at the state headquarters of the corps in Akure, the state capital.

Adeleye said, “About 600 suspects have been prosecuted between January and June 2024. Kidnapping in Ondo State has gone down by 90 per cent and the remaining 10 per cent, we only have them in the borders, the extreme. But in all of these few occasions, we ensured that we rescued the victims and the suspects were made to face the music.

“The signal we are sending to criminals is that Ondo State isn’t a place where they can stay. We want them to know that even as kidnappers, once you kidnap, you can’t get away with it. If you steal a car, you can’t get away with it. If you break houses, we’ll pick you. So, what’s the point of doing what you know you won’t get away with?”

On the 48 suspects paraded, the commander explained that they were arrested across the state during the ongoing ‘Operation Safe-Ground’ in the state.

According to him, the suspects allegedly committed crimes which included kidnapping, stealing of cows, attempted murder, fraud and illegal counterfeiting of money, cultism, burglary, arson, anti-grazing activities and vandalisation of critical government assets among others.

The Ondo Amotekun boss declared that all suspects would soon be charged in court.

“Like I said, we have 48 suspects today (Wednesday) and all of these suspects have been profiled and will be taken to the next level which is the appropriate court of law to try their cases. Those found wanting will be sent to the correctional home.

“We are telling criminals in the state to get out of Ondo State and to the good people of Ondo State, we want to reassure you that the government of Lucky Aiyedatiwa is resolute in making the state conducive for businesses, social activities and all that makes it a good place to stay,” he stated.

Davido sues Sophia Momodu for Imade’s custody

0

International award-winning singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has dragged Sophia Momodu, the mother of his first child, Imade, to court, seeking custody of the daughter.

In an originating motion filed by his lawyers, Dr Olaniyi Arije, Okey Barrah and others, at the Lagos State High Court, dated April 17, 2024, Davido is praying the court for “an order granting joint custody of Miss Imade Adeleke to the applicant.”

In the alternative, the singer prayed to the court for “an order granting to the applicant unfettered and unrestricted access to Miss Imade.”

The suit, marked LD/1587PMC/2024, has as applicant Mr David Adedeji Adeleke, while Ms Sophia Momodu was listed as the sole respondent.

The originating motion was supported by a 44-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Davido himself.

He narrated that though he had a relationship with Momodu that led to the birth of their child on May 14, 2015, the relationship had ended some years ago “while we resolved to take care of our child as biological father and mother.”

Davido said, “That it is on record that I have been responsible for the payment of all the school fees of my daughter to provide her with the best education possible and to meet all her educational needs without a hitch.

“That I have also been providing money for the rent of the apartment where the respondent resides with our daughter.”

The singer said that as a result of the love he had for Imade, he purchased and offered the mother a N200m worth apartment in a condominium gated community with a swimming pool and 24-hour power and water supply at Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos. An offer he claimed was turned down.

He said, “The respondent rejected the offer to stay and live at the above-described secured Oniru apartment, which had been purchased already, but demanded that I continue to pay N5,000,000 annually for a rented facility as my own contribution towards my daughter’s accommodation.”

Davido said to ensure that the interest of Imade was well-catered for, “I bought a Range Rover Sport Utility Vehicle for the use of the child and the respondent to meet the transport needs, including transportation of the child to and from school, etc.”

He added that sometime last year, he received a call from her daughter’s school that Imade had been absent for two weeks, and upon his inquiry from Momodu, “She began to make excuses and complained that the Range Rover SUV was not in a good condition, however, she refused to inform me about that.”

He added, “That sequel to the information about the said condition of the vehicle, I provided another vehicle, Highlander SUV, and in addition, the sum of N5.8m as requested by her for the repair of the Range Rover SUV, making it two vehicles in the custody and use of the respondent and our daughter.”

According to Davido, to further ensure that the interest of their child was adequately taken care of, “I also made commitments to pay for living expenses, the fees of the nanny to our child, provide medical and health care, insurance, periodic international travel expenses and tickets.”

“That notwithstanding my efforts in the overall interest of my daughter, the respondent has continued to make outlandish and Utopian demands to frustrate me,” the singer added.

Listing the other demands allegedly made by Momodu, he said, “The respondent, among others, is demanding that I should pay the nanny she hired the sum of $800 per month, and that the total sum of $19,600 per annum be paid as a lump sum.”

Davido claimed that despite his contribution towards ensuring a better life for their daughter, “the respondent has continued to show me unwarranted cruelty, inflicting so much pain on me.”

Davido and Sophia have often been at loggerheads.

In 2021, Sophia revealed that she was pained when their daughter, Imade, took Davido’s last name and not hers.

Momodu revealed this via her Instagram Story when she reacted to a post about children bearing their mothers’ names.

According to her, she cried bitterly because her daughter could not bear her last name ‘Momodu’.

She wrote, “I remember my mom and aunties laughing at me when I was crying because my daughter’s last name wasn’t going to be Momodu.

“I was genuinely distraught. I was even arguing and everything, that they put her father’s full name and not a single letter from mine.”

She further revealed that her mother made her understand that Imade should bear her father’s name so that she could gain from her father’s lineage and inheritance.

She added, “It made me shut up real quick, but I lowkey had so many questions.”
