Serbia threatens to exit Euro 2024 over chants

The head of the Serbian football association threatened to pull the team out of the European Championships over chants made during the draw between Albania and Croatia.

Jovan Surbatovic — the General Secretary of the Football Association of Serbia (FSS) — told Serbian broadcaster RTS late Wednesday — the country demanded action from authorities over remarks made during the match, including the chant: “Kill, kill, kill the Serb”.

Surbatovic told RTS that the FSS would seek sanctions from UEFA “even at the cost of not continuing the competition.”

Serbia has had tense relations with both Albania and Croatia in past decades.

In the 1990s, a string of wars broke out across the former Yugoslavia that saw bloody fighting in Bosnia, Croatia and Slovenia.

Many blamed late Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic for instigating the conflicts.

Serbia also fought a war against ethnic Albanian insurgents in the breakaway province of Kosovo in the late 1990s, which triggered a NATO intervention in the conflict.

Serbia is competing in their first European Championship since the dissolution of Yugoslavia.

The squad lost 1-0 to England in their opening match, with their coach Dragan Stojkovic saying the team showed “too much respect” to their rivals.

NANS lauds Tinubu for reconstituting tertiary institutions’ governing councils

The National Association of Nigerian Students has lauded President Bola Tinubu for reconstituting the governing councils of tertiary institutions and appointing technocrats, and politicians to spearhead the development of Nigerian institutions.

In a statement signed by its President, Pedro Chibuzor, on Wednesday, NANS thanked Tinubu for appointing “worthy and competent individuals” to the councils.

The students’ body believes that these appointments have the potential to fast-track the rapid development of Nigerian institutions.

The statement read, “We the Nigerian students, therefore, commend President Bola Tinubu for his love and concern about the transformation of academic institutions through this sound appointment of an incorruptible team of thoroughbred administrators to help fasten the development in our ivory towers after the recent introduction of student loan for Nigerian students.”

The association noted that the appointment of over 200 academicians, including 100 professors and PhD holders, to university, polytechnic, and college of education councils, marks a significant departure from past appointments that had fewer academicians.

While congratulating the governing council members and chairmen on their appointment, NANS urged them to uphold justice and prevent victimisation of students by institution management.

The statement added, “We are proud of Mr President’s foresight to have appointed some of the finest Nigerians to run the affairs of Nigeria’s ivory towers.

“Lastly, we appeal to the Academic Staff Union of Universities to cooperate with the new council members and Mr President’s genuine concern for the development of our education sector.”

IG orders continuous barricade of Rivers LG secretariats

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, said his men would continue to barricade all local government secretariats in Rivers State amidst the ongoing political tension.

He also said the recent controversy surrounding the recruitment of police constables is really appalling, as he highlighted the rigorous standards expected of officers.

Egbetokun made this known on Thursday in Abuja while addressing journalists on the sidelines of a conference with Commissioners of Police and other senior officers.

He disclosed that policemen will not leave the headquarters until a court judgement on the controversy over the tenure of local government council chairmen in the State.

Egbetokun said the presence of the police officers was to ensure peace and order and not to intimidate anyone. He also reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force on the need for preemptive measures to forestall any escalation of violence.

“The police will continue to occupy the secretariats until a court of competent jurisdiction delivers judgment on the local government crisis in Rivers State,” he said.

The state police command had on Tuesday announced that it had taken over all the council headquarters to forestall further bloodshed and to prevent a breakdown of law and order.”

A policeman and a member of a local security outfit were killed during a clash between supporters of the governor and his predecessor, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, at Eberi-Omuma in the Omuma Local Government Area of the state.

Speaking with The According on the development, the state Commissioner for Police, Olatunji Disu, said the LG council headquarters would remain shut for the time being due to the clash between the feuding parties.

Police recrutiment controversy

Speaking further, the police boss said the recent controversy surrounding the recruitment of police constables is really appalling, highlighting the rigorous standards expected of officers.

On the allegation from the Police Service Commission (PSC) about the recruitment process, Egbetokun said the police management is wary of recruiting individuals deemed untrainable or unsuitable for police duties.

He said, “The Nigeria Police Force is a specialised institution that is not meant for all Nigerians.”

Nasarawa NDLEA seized 7,148.945kg drugs in one year

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nasarawa State Command said it seized 7,149kg of drugs in one year between July 2023 and June 2024.

Commander of NDLEA in the state, Peter Onche-Odaudu, disclosed this at a news briefing on Thursday in Lafia, the state capital

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the briefing was part of week-long activities to mark the 2024 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Onche-Odaudu said that the task of checking the menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, “despite the daunting challenges of logistics and paucity of funds, had resulted in modest achievements.”

He said that cannabis sativa accounted for 7,037.2 kg of the seizures; cocaine, 0.011 kg, methamphetamine, 0.185 kg, while sundry psychotropic substances accounted for 111.534 kg.

The commander said that the United Nations had set aside June 26 of every year for the commemoration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by member nations.

He stated that the theme for this year’s Day: “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention”, was apt, as it emphasised the importance of prevention over cure in issues of drug abuse.

Onche-Odaudu said that a couple of activities had been lined up by his command to commemorate this year’s day.

These, he said, would include an advocacy walk, starting from Lafia and ending at Lafia Stadium, with the grand finale held on June 22 at the Conference Room of the Federal Secretariat, Lafia.

The commander further stated that the command would take an anti-drug sensitisation campaign to GSM Village, Lafia and Lafia Custodial Centre on Monday and Tuesday.

He thanked Gov. Abdullahi Sule for his support to the command toward the drug war in the state.

The commander also appreciated the support of journalists, sister security agencies and stakeholders in the war against drug abuse in the state.

Hoodlums reportedly kill one person, injure two policemen in Kano

Some suspected hoodlums have reportedly killed one person and injured two policemen on Jaen Makera quarters in Kano metropolis, Kano State.
The outgoing Commissioner of Police, AIG Usaini Gumel, disclosed this when he spoke to Journalists on Thursday in Kano.
Gumel noted that the suspects killed one Muktar Garba, also known as Babalia, during the incident.
He said that Garba died while receiving treatment at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist hospital, Kano.
He added that his corpse had been released to his relatives for burial.
Gumel said that the hoodlums who were carrying dangerous weapons defied police presence, deployed to the area, and started attacking innocent people.

He stated that more reinforcement from the police tactical team and nearby divisions was deployed to the area, and peace was restored as the hoodlums fled.
The commissioner said that efforts are being intensified to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
He mentioned that some other groups of hoodlums on Wednesday engaged in street fighting, using dangerous weapons at Yan Dillalai and Jaen Makera, but were dispersed by the police team.
Gumel said the two policemen, SC Wasilu Umar and PC Abdulmalik Yusif, who were injured during the incident, were treated and discharged from the hospital.
He said that a suspect, Umar Shuaibu, was arrested for attacking Yusif, while a vehicle attached to Filin Hockey was destroyed.
The commissioner said that the command strives to address the underlying causes of violence and promote lasting peace and well-being for all individuals affected.

Apapa Customs set new record of N17.9bn daily collection

The Nigeria Customs Service, Apapa Area Command, said it achieved a milestone by collecting N17,903,312,518.80 in a single day, setting a new record since its establishment.

This feat was announced by the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, during a press briefing held on Wednesday, 19 June 2024, at the Command.

A statement on Thursday via Customs X account noted that Comptroller Olomu, who took office just a month ago, attributed this achievement to the intensified efforts of Customs officers in curbing revenue loopholes, especially in the face of dwindling cargo throughput, which has reportedly dropped by more than 50 per cent.

“This feat is the beginning of many revenue collection, trade facilitation and anti-smuggling exploits to be achieved while discharging our statutory responsibilities,” Olomu was quoted as saying

He expressed confidence in the command’s ability to maintain and exceed its mandate, praising the dedication of the officers and staff.

The CAC also revealed that the Command recently intercepted two containers of used clothing and Crusader soap.

Notably, the statement revealed that the revenue generation coincides with the one-year anniversary of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, in office.

Comptroller Olomu used the opportunity to urge all port users to adhere strictly to lawful operational guidelines.

Appeal court reserves ruling on Rivers assembly crisis

The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, has reserved ruling in the case between Martin Amaewhule and 24 others against Victor Oko-Jumbo and others.

The court, on Thursday, resolved to deliver its ruling on a later date.

The three-man panel of Justice Jimi Olukayode Bada, Justice Hama Barka, and Justice Balkisu Aliyu, made this decision during its sitting on appeal number CA/PHC/198/2024, monitored virtually on Thursday.

Amaewhule and 24 others are challenging the interlocutory injunction of Justice Charles Wali of a State High Court in Port Harcourt, which validated the declaration of their seats in the state House of Assembly vacant, pending the determination of the suit before it.

The High Court had also ordered Amaewhule and others to stop parading themselves as members of the Peoples Democratic Party and Rivers State House of Assembly until the conclusion of the matter before it

However, Amaewhule and others who were disturbed by the decision of the high court approached the Court of Appeal sitting in the state for a stay and subsequent invalidation of the ruling.

When the court sat on June 14, it urged the parties in the appeal to maintain status quo and advised the appellant to serve all the processes on the defendant.

Amaewhule, in the suit, is seeking a stay of the interlocutory orders of the High Court and challenging the jurisdiction of the lower court to entertain the matter.

But the court resolved to deliver its decision on the subject matter on a later date to be communicated to the parties

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has reacted to a viral video of a police officer opening a car door for a young man and carrying money for him while he sprayed cash at an event

Adejobi described the officer’s behaviour as “embarrassing” and “disgusting” to the police force.

Sharing the video on X.com on Thursday, Adejobi said, “This was a case study at the IGP’s conference today in Abuja. This has been condemned, and an investigation has been instituted into the case. Senior officers have been ordered to take action against such in their AoRs and screen those who are to have police escorts and guards.

“Even the guy he was escorting doesn’t deserve to have a police escort. It’s embarrassing to the force and disgusting. Perhaps the policeman was on an illegal duty. We will fish him out and many alike.”

Three to die by hanging for robbing car owner in Ekiti

An Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division, has sentenced three persons to death by hanging for robbing an owner of his car at gunpoint.

The defendants, Akingbade David, Michael Mayowa and Ibrahim Mukaila, were charged with armed robbery and conspiracy.

According to the charge sheet, they were arrested and charged to court for robbing one Gbenga Ajayi of his Toyota Corolla car at gunpoint on March 1, 2019, at NTA Road, Ado Ekiti.

An Assistant Chief Legal Officer, O.F Ajumobi, who prosecuted the case for Ekiti State, said, “The offences of Conspiracy and Armed Robbery are contrary to Section 6(b)of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, Cap.R11, Vol.14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004”.

Ajumobi called two witnesses and tendered 11 exhibits in support of the case.

The defendants, represented by Akin Abon, lyanu Olumuagun and Adeyinka Opaleke gave evidence in their defence and called no witnesses.

In the court judgment on Wednesday, Justice John Adeyeye held that “the prosecution proved all the ingredients of the offences against the defendants beyond reasonable doubt”.

Adeyeye consequently convicted all the defendants and sentenced them to death by hanging for both of the offences.
