The Federal Government has established an aviation wing for the Nigerian Army, and acquired fighter helicopters for its operations.
According to the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the BELL UH-1H, HUEY helicopters were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Friday.
He noted that the establishment of the Nigeria Army Aviation Wing would help strengthen operations.
Nwachukwu said the BELL UH-1H Helicopters were equipped with advanced sensors and enablers to conduct a range of missions, including reconnaissance, surveillance, rescue, logistics, transportation and medical evacuation.
The statement reads: “NA has taken a significant step in enhancing its operational capabilities with the delivery of the first batch of new aircraft. The berthing of the aircraft marks a significant milestone in the development of the Nigerian Army Aviation’s capacity to provide air support for ground operations.
“The aircraft BELL UH-1H, HUEY, helicopters, were formally received by the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja in a brief ceremony held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Thursday 20 June, 2024.
“Receiving the aircraft, General Lagbaja, noted that the renewed drive to establish an NA Aviation wing was conceived by the then-former COAS, Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah, rtd, in 2014, with a three-phase ten-year implementation plan.
“The COAS extolled former Chiefs of Army Staff, maintaining that their tenacity and drive, along with the collective efforts of personnel and Nigerian Government’s political will, have been instrumental in realizing the fruition of NA Aviation.
“Gen Lagbaja appreciated the various successive administrations for their support in training NA Pilots and Ground Crews as well as putting in place requisite structures.
“The Army Chief also appreciated the forerunners, particularly the sister services and the Nigerian Police Force Aviation wing, for their support and encouragement. He noted that the NA is spurred to serve the nation better with the acquisition of the new platforms and provide Nigerians, an enabling environment for economic prosperity.”
In his remarks at the event, the Coordinator, Nigerian Army Aviation, Brigadier General Musa Alkali, stated that the arrival of the Nigerian Army Aviation Vanguard platforms is a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Army Aviation, in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s Command Philosophy.

Terrorists turn on each other over disagreement, scores killed
Not less than 16 terrorists including two top commanders have been killed after two groups turned on each other in Maru local government area of Zamfara State in the early hours of Friday.
According to counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, who posted the news on X, the two top terrorists commanders were identified as Alhaji Nagala and Maikube, who have been engaging each other in a supremacy and territorial battle.
Writing on the incident, Makama said:
“In a shocking turn of events, a group of terrorists have killed each other in a brutal clash between rival factions. The incident occurred in a remote Northwestern region of Maru LGA where the terrorists had been causing havoc in the peaceful community.
“According to sources, the clash erupted when one faction attempted to gain control over a strategic territory held by the rival group. The fighting was intense, with both sides suffering heavy losses.
“Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that at least 16 terrorists were killed in the clash, including several top bandits commanders, amongst the prominent were Alhaji Nagala and Maikube
“The sources said that the rival factions have been at odds for months, with tensions escalating in recent weeks. The clash is seen as a significant blow to the terrorist organization, which has been weakened by internal divisions and infighting.
“The authorities have welcomed the news, stating that the elimination of terrorists is a positive development in the fight against terrorism.
“The incident is a clear indication that the terrorists are capable of turning on each other, and that their ideology is rooted in violence and destruction.”

Army rescues seven women, nine children in Borno
The troops of the Nigerian Army in Borno State have rescued seven women and nine children snatched from their homes by terrorists.
The victims were rescued in a series of coordinated counter-terrorism operations conducted by troops in collaboration with the Vigilante and Hybrid Force.
In a statement posted on X.com on Friday, the Army said one terrorist was killed and arms and ammunition were recovered during the operation.
The statement partly read, “In Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, troops executed an ambush operation targeting terrorists’ staging areas around Pulka and Ashagashiya. During the operations, troops made contact with the terrorists, neutralizing one, while others fled in disarray, abandoning their belongings.
“The troops successfully rescued seven women and nine children from the clutches of the terrorists. The troops also recovered one submachine gun, three bicycles, four blankets, cooking utensils, and several other items.”
Also, the Army said troops ambushed terrorists in the Komala area of Borno State, adding that one terrorist was killed during the ambush, and several weapons were recovered.
“Similarly, troops conducted an ambush operation in the Komala general area of Borno State. The operations resulted in the neutralization of one terrorist and the recovery of two AK-47 rifles with two magazines containing 29 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special) ammunition and 91 belted links of PKT ammunition.
“Additional items recovered include one SMG, two AK-47 rifles, one SMG magazine, nine rounds of 9 mm ammunition, and one motorbike.”
The Army noted that In a separate operation in Benue State, troops, in response to intelligence reports about terrorists’ movements in Ayati Village, Ukum LGA, launched a swift operation to stop the nefarious activities of the terrorists.
The statement added, “The terrorists, upon sighting the troops, fled, abandoning one AK-47 rifle, one Dane gun, two 83 mm launchers, four locally made launchers, and one rifle magazine. The troops also seized 19 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special) and five rounds of 5.56 x 45 mm ammunition and other assorted arms.”
The Army also stated that troops halted the payment of ransom to kidnappers in Kogi State.
It added that its troops, in collaboration with hunters, engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel and killed one of them.
“In another successful operation in Kogi State, troops responded to information regarding a planned ransom payment to kidnappers. Coordinating with vigilantes and local hunters, the troops engaged the kidnappers at the planned exchange point in Okunran Okoloke General Area.
“During the encounter, one kidnapper was neutralized, and an AK-47 rifle with a magazine containing 15 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special) ammunition and one motorcycle were recovered,” the statement added.
Police refuse Kano governor’s request to evict Emir Bayero from mini palace
Tension is rising in Kano after Kano State governor, Abba Yusuf’s request for police assistance in evicting the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero was met with a refusal by the Police.
Kano State Police Commissioner, AIG Usaini Gumel, on Friday, gave reasons why the police ignored Governor Yusuf’s directive on the eviction of the deposed Emir of Kano.
This comes just days after a Federal High Court ruling nullified Sanusi’s reinstatement, which had been a controversial move by Yusuf himself. The Kano State government had hoped to utilize police force to remove Bayero from the palace, but the Police’s response indicates a reluctance to get involved in what is likely to be a volatile situation.

Speaking in an interview with The Punch on Friday, the police commissioner said obeying the governor’s eviction order would be tantamount to “jumping the gun”.
According to him, the same government that gave the order had filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which would come up on Monday, 24th June 2024.
“The police will not evict the deposed Emir because the same government has filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which would come up on Monday, 24th June 2024.
“The government is jumping the gun because the same government has filed a case on the eviction order, which is coming up on the 24th of June, 2024. So, if we carry out the order, it is like we are pre-empting the court because we don’t know what will happen at the court,” he added.

Concerned Nigerians Berate Rivers APC Over Call For Emergency Rule in Rivers State

The Concerned Citizens Forum of Nigeria (CCFN) has categorically condemned the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its reckless and undemocratic call for emergency rule in the state.
The group said the move by the APC is a deliberate and calculated maneuver aimed at exacerbating the existing instability in the region for political expediency.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday in Abuja, Executive Director, Dr. Ekeanyanwu Promise, said the
current crisis in the local government system is a result of the APC’s own internal contradictions and mismanagement, and declaring a state of emergency would undermine democratic governance.
According to Promise, implementing such a measure would only serve to erode the trust of the populace in the democratic process, further disenfranchising the people of Rivers State and potentially exacerbating the existing tensions.
The group, therefore, urged President Bola Tinubu to sanction the conduct of a comprehensive investigation into the APC’s involvement in the security breaches in Rivers State and hold them accountable for any wrongdoing.
“We are dismayed and apprehensive about the recent declaration by the All Progressives Congress (APC) advocating for a state of emergency in Rivers State. This proposition, rather than offering a solution, appears to be a deliberate and calculated maneuver aimed at exacerbating the existing instability in the region for political expediency,” Promise said.
“We, therefore, unequivocally and emphatically condemn the APC’s call for a state of emergency in Rivers State, as it is not only unwarranted but also a deliberate attempt to plunge the state into chaos, confusion, and turmoil. This move is a thinly veiled ploy to conceal their own culpability and destabilize the peace in Rivers State for political gain.
“The narrative being perpetuated by the APC is patently false and misleading, as they seek to portray themselves as innocent bystanders while deflecting accountability for the current situation. We, however, see through this smokescreen and recognize their actions for what they truly are – a deliberate attempt to manipulate the situation for political advantage.
“While we acknowledge that the security situation in Rivers State is a concern that requires attention, we urge the relevant authorities to adopt proactive measures that address the root causes of the issue. Declaring a state of emergency is not a viable solution, as it will only lead to further violence, displacement, and human rights violations.
“We have been observing with grave concern and trepidation the recent call for a state of emergency by the All Progressives Congress (APC), and we are firmly convinced that this declaration is not aligned with the best interests of Rivers State and its inhabitants. On the contrary, it appears to be a deliberate and calculated scheme designed to precipitate monumental chaos and confusion in the state, a development that is both unfortunate and deeply distressing.
“It is apparent that the APC is exploiting this call for a state of emergency as a smokescreen to obscure their own actions in Rivers State, a ploy that we, as an organization steadfastly dedicated to promoting peace and stability, cannot and will not condone. The people of Rivers State deserve far better than to be exploited as mere pawns in a political game characterized by machinations and manipulation.
“We are persuaded that the APC’s call for a state of emergency is a politically motivated maneuver aimed at undermining the current administration in Rivers State, a dangerous plot to destabilize the state and create an atmosphere of fear, uncertainty, and turmoil. We wish to unequivocally condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the call for a state of emergency in Rivers State, as it would only serve to further destabilize the region, exacerbate the suffering of its people, and perpetuate a culture of political manipulation and exploitation.
“It is imperative to recognize that declaring a state of emergency is a drastic and extraordinary measure, not a political instrument to be exploited for partisan gain. Implementing such a measure would only serve to erode the trust of the populace in the democratic process, further disenfranchising the people of Rivers State and potentially exacerbating the existing tensions.
“Rather than resorting to this heavy-handed approach, we urge the authorities to focus on implementing tangible solutions that address the underlying issues. We emphatically call for the immediate apprehension of the APC chairman in Rivers State, whose inflammatory rhetoric and actions have been demonstrably linked to the current tensions and instability.
“Furthermore, we demand that the federal government conduct a comprehensive investigation into the APC’s involvement in the security breaches in Rivers State and hold them accountable for any wrongdoing. Instead of declaring a state of emergency, we call for accountability, justice, and transparency.
“The immediate arrest of the state chairman of the APC in Rivers State is a necessary step towards restoring peace, stability, and normalcy in the region.“
INEC warns Ondo, Edo govs against misuse of incumbency power ahead of elections
As the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states approach, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to political parties and candidates to respect the legal requirements for equitable access to public facilities.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, in a statement on Friday, emphasized the need for adherence to Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act 2022, which prohibits the use of state resources to benefit or disadvantage any political party or candidate.
Olumekun noted that the commission had observed a persistent issue in Nigeria’s electioneering process: the misuse of incumbency power to block opposition parties and candidates from utilizing public facilities for campaign activities.
This, according to him, includes restricting access to public buildings, limiting the use of state-owned media, imposing excessive fees for advertising, and removing or vandalizing campaign materials, leading to violent clashes and disruptions to public peace.
To address these concerns, Olumekun reiterated that Sections 95(3-5) of the Electoral Act mandate equal coverage for all parties and candidates by public media houses, and violations can result in sanctions against media officials. He emphasized the importance of adhering to these regulations, adding that INEC had made guidelines for political rallies, processions, and campaigns available on its website and social media platforms to ensure clarity and compliance.
“The Commission calls on all concerned parties to adhere strictly to these guidelines and legal provisions,” Olumekun stated.
With the Edo governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024, and the Ondo governorship poll on November 16, 2024, INEC’s warning serves as a reminder to ensure a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.

Save public varsities from collapse, ASUU begs Tinubu
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, on Friday, said that only the intervention of President Bola Tinubu could save public universities from being thrown into another prolonged strike action.
The union called on eminent Nigerians to prevail on President Tinubu to stop acting so indifferently to the parlous state of the public universities as well as the genuine demands of the lecturers regarding funding of the university among other welfare concerns.
The union said that the refusal of the government to be alive to its financial responsibility and commitment to the public universities is dangerous and would only continue to encourage the collapse of the public universities.
The ASUU Chairman, Lagos Zone, Prof Adelaja Odukoya, made this call on Friday at a press briefing held at the ASUU Secretariat of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye.
Those in attendance at the briefing included leaders of ASUU from Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Lagos State University, University of Lagos, and Olabisi Onabanjo University among others.
Prof Odukoya said it was sad and painful that the present administration has failed to embrace proper funding of the universities but will rather continue to uphold the erstwhile tokenism that drove the universities into its present parlous condition.
He said that the issues that may force the universities to embark on yet another prolonged strike very soon are the deliberate refusal of the Federal Government to sign and implement the re-negotiated FGN/ASUU Agreement, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances, and arrears of promotion.
Others are non-release of third-party deductions criminal failure to implement the recommendations of the White Papers on Visitation Panels to Federal Universities and refusal to address the unending retrogressive proliferation of Universities.
ASUU condemned in strong terms the creation of more universities by the federal and state government when it has failed to fund the existing ones saying that this is only encouraging duplication of duties with its attendant increase in overhead cost and expenditures.
Rather than establishing new universities, the union said that the government should have expanded the scope of many of the existing universities that have the capacity to increase their student population and some academic programmes being run in such institutions.
The union said “Regrettably Visitors of Federal and State universities have turned the establishment of universities into constituency projects.
“This development is obviously harmful, retrogressive, and unacceptable. Our Union hereby calls for the review and strengthening of the NUC laws to arrest the negative trends”.
Odukoya said “The deliberate refusal of the Tinubu-led Federal Government to sign and implement the concluded renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement is a criminal violation of the Collective Bargaining principles as enshrined in the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention.
“The renegotiated agreement was concluded in 2021 after five years of renegotiation for which both the Government and ASUU committed massive resources, with the hope of achieving a reversal of the dwindling fortune of our Universities as the apex agency of human capacity development.
“With the deliberate refusal of the Federal Government to sign and implement the renegotiated Agreement, our members have been stretched beyond their elastic limit of patience and our union urges the Tinubu-led Federal Government to without further delay, set in motion machinery for the immediate signing and implementation of the renegotiated Agreement to avoid another round of industrial crises in our public universities”.
The union also demanded the abrogation of the IPPIS payment system describing it as a cesspit of centralised corruption eroding the university’s autonomy and making life difficult for the lecturers
Odulaja said that despite government pronouncement on the exit of the universities from IPPIS, the deliberate refusal of co-government and ministry officials to migrate the University Payroll System away from the platform is unfortunate, condemnable, and a confirmation that Nigeria is a becoming lawless State.
The union also lamented the refusal of the Federal Government to pay three and half months’ salaries of its members in addition to the outstanding Earned Academic Allowances since 2020 still outstanding.
ASUU said the failure of the government to be alive to its financial responsibility has no doubt exposed its members to a range of financial difficulties given the prevailing economic hardship.
Odulaja said “The issues in contentions do not require rock science to resolve. All the issues in contention can be immediately resolved if President Tinubu as the Commander-in-Chief would perform the functions of his office by immediately interfacing directly with the leadership of our Union.
“The President should make good his promise to the Nigerian Nation that “No child of school age would stay at home due to avoidable industrial unrest in our ivory towers”.
“Our union demands that all withheld deductions; unpaid promotion arrears; unpaid salaries of staff on sabbatical, adjunct, etc. be paid in the interest of peace in the Nigerian University System.
“Our union once again as part of her intellectual contribution to national development offers the immediate adoption by the Federal Government of the more economical, robust, and efficient University Transparency and Accountability Solution to replace the illegal, widely rejected, and corruption-infested IPPIS.”
Ultimate HMO raises capital base to N1bn
The Ultimate Health Management Services has recapitalised its capital base from N400m to N1bn in keeping with the provisions of the National Health Insurance Act 2022.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Angela Ajala, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja at the HMO’s 13th Annual General Meeting.
Ajala noted that the organisation went beyond the N750m minimum requirement stipulated by the regulatory body – the National Health Insurance Authority.
“We believe that if they say N750m, we can do a billion because we are not restricting ourselves to just Nigeria, we’re going beyond. So we need to expand our base and make sure that we can take on the expansion we’re doing.
“We are dealing with human lives and so the wellbeing of every Nigerian irrespective of where they are very critical to what we do.”
She also said that the HMO was not only particular about the well-being of Nigerians living in Nigeria but also expanding its horizons to cater to the well-being of its members in the diaspora who have family in Nigeria.
On his part, the Managing Director of the HMO, Lekan Ewenla said there was a need for inflationary trends to be put into consideration for upward review of premiums so that services could continue to be provided by hospitals.
Ewenla stated that health insurance is volume driven with provision for basic healthcare services to be covered, and with an amount attached to the services to be rendered.
He added that all of these parameters were put into consideration in developing the health insurance programme for Nigerians.
“As we speak, there are two risk managers for Nigerians. The first risk manager is the primary provider at the primary level. Services that are primary services are meant to be managed at the primary level by the risk managers.
“At commencement, it was determined to be N550 per person per month in 2005 and the actuarial reports that were submitted to the regulator indicated that a recommended percentage should upwardly review the N550 or whatever 65 per cent within 24 months.
“This was to take care of the inflationary trend which was responsible for the upward review of N550 to N750 in 2014.”
He highlighted that the review was not carried out in the stipulated two years which would have been 2007 but was carried out in 2014 instead, which saw the rise of premium from N550 to N750.
“Now the last review that was done was in 2014, we all know the exchange rate today and we all know that the bulk of the medications that we use in this country to provide services are imported.
“So facilities, hospitals, that’s our primary risk bearer no longer enjoy the scheme”, he said.
Speaking on getting all Nigerians on board the health insurance scheme, he said that the HMO was working with the regulatory agency to define the clusters available both in the formal and informal sectors of the nation to bring them in.
“For example, we are looking at the youths of this country that are over 40 million that in tertiary institutions across the nation, they will be mandatorily mandated through the regulatory institutions to comply.
“We are looking at the organised private sector, they’ve already complied but not totally. So we are going to see those that are still on the fringes, to bring them on board.”
He said that with time all the clusters will be brought on board as they all have associations and bodies that regulate them which would make it easier once they are all sensitised about the benefits.
U.S lawmakers seek release of Binance chief
The United States lawmakers French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan have called for the release of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, who is currently detained in Nigeria on charges of tax evasion and other financial crimes.
The lawmakers’ appeal followed a Wednesday’s visit to Gambaryan at Kuje prison, where they were alarmed by his deteriorating health and the conditions of his detention.
Gambaryan, suffering from malaria and double pneumonia, has reportedly lost significant weight and is being denied adequate medical attention.
The legislators emphasised the urgency of their request, describing the prison conditions as “horrible.”
The plea aligned with calls from Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki Gambaryan, who has been advocating for his release.
She also urged the U.S. government to increase its efforts to secure her husband’s release, noting that American tax dollars support Nigeria annually.
Hill gave the account of the visit on his X page on Thursday, highlighting the urgency of the situation, stating, “Yesterday, @RepHoulahan and I visited with US citizen Tigran Gambaryan in Kuje Prison in Nigeria. We found him suffering from the conditions there, as he has malaria and double pneumonia, and he reports that he has lost significant weight.
“Even worse, he’s being denied access to adequate medical attention.
“Although I am pleased that Nigeria dropped tax evasion charges against Tigran on 6/14, it’s my view that he’s being wrongfully detained on charges related to money laundering,” he said.
Hill further stated, “Tigran must be immediately granted a humanitarian release, the remaining charges dropped, and he must return home to America where he belongs.”
Similarly, Representative Houlahan in a video said they have requested the U.S. embassy to push for Gambaryan’s humanitarian release due to his poor health and the severe conditions in the prison.
“We did find pretty difficult conditions. He was clearly under a lot of stress and his health is not very good,” Houlahan said.
She continued that she hopes “we will be able to put the full force of America behind us to make sure that he is returned home safely.”
Previously, a group of U.S. congressmen, including Hill, wrote to President Joe Biden on June 4, 2024, urging him to pressure Nigeria for Gambaryan’s release.
The EFCC continues its prosecution of Gambaryan, despite mounting pressure from U.S lawmakers and advocates.
Obi visits family of kidnapped Anambra LP gov candidate
A former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, visited the family of the kidnapped Labour Party governorship candidate during the 2021 Anambra governorship election, Obiora Agbasimalo.
During the visit at their home in Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, Obi also commiserated with the family over the death of Pa Emmanuel Agbasimalo, the father of the kidnapped victim. Pa Emmanuel died on May 20, 2024.
The photos of his visit were shared by the wife of the kidnapped victim, Eucharia Agbasimalo, on her social media handle on Thursday.
The Labour Party governorship candidate was kidnapped at Azia community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, on his way to attend a political function in September 2021 and his whereabouts have remained unknown to date.
The family said Obi visited them to commiserate with them over their missing son and during the visit, the former Anambra governor learnt that they were also grieving over the death of the father of the missing LP candidate.
They added that Obi commiserated with the family over the death and also showed empathy that their son, who was kidnapped in Anambra in 2021, has not been found.
They described Obi’s visit to the family as a mark of love, noting that his visit to condole and sympathise with the family at a time when they were still looking for their missing son and also mourning the death of their patriarch, was largely appreciated by the family.
The caption read, “The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate paid a visit to the family of Obiora Agbasimalo, the kidnapped 2021 Anambra LP governorship candidate. During the visit, Mr Obi also learnt of the recent demise of the victim’s father, Engr. Emmanuel Agbasimalo and thereafter commiserated with the family.
“The visit, which is coming at a time when the leadership of the Labour Party at the national and state levels have abandoned their governorship candidate, who is still in the captivity of kidnappers, was largely appreciated by the family in particular.
“Emmanuel Agbasimalo died while thinking and waiting for the return of his son, who has been kidnapped since September 2021, and his whereabouts are still unknown. Obi assured the family that he would use his good offices to get to the root of the matter and ensure that justice is served.”
The family also called on the Labour Party at both national and state levels to show seriousness and responsibility in looking for their missing candidate.
