Oyo unveils measures to prevent cholera outbreak in schools

The Oyo State Government has rolled out some guidelines to ensure that food handlers in public schools follow strict hygiene practices to prevent contamination.

The Executive Chairman, Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr Nureni Adeniran made this known in the instructions released in Ibadan on Saturday.

He advised headteachers to implement the measures to prevent cholera outbreaks in public basic schools in the state.

The SUBEB boss said that the Oyo State government, through the board, “is on top of its game to ensure that public basic schools are taking steps to ensure the health and safety of students.”

Adeniran urged parents, guardians, as well as school authorities to adhere to safety guidelines.

He said the board would work with Education Secretaries, teachers and other stakeholders to ensure strict compliance.

The advisory emphasised the importance of hand hygiene, recommending that children carry hand sanitisers and frequently wash their hands with soap and water, especially before meals and after using the restroom.

Adeniran also recommended that schools keep Oral Rehydration Salt available in their clinics to manage dehydration cases promptly.

He said that schools should notify the state emergency hotline, 615, immediately, in case of any health emergency or suspected cholera cases.

Adeniran said other preventive measures including comprehensive health talks on cholera prevention among learners and staff would be conducted regularly, as well as ensuring safe drinking practices.

Technology will drive NDDC fiscal transparency, says MD

NDDC to tackle erosion in Bayelsa community

The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Samuel Ogbuku, has said the commission will leverage technology to upgrade all its operations in the quest to transform the Niger Delta Region.

Ogbuku stated this during a three-day Capacity Building and Retreat for the staff of the NDDC Directorate of Finance and Supply in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

This was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday by the NDDC Director of Corporate Affairs, Pius Ughakpoteni.

Ogbuku stressed the need to deploy technology as it continued to reposition the Commission for greater effectiveness and better service delivery.

He underscored the importance of strong internal mechanisms to check overbearing external influences in the Commission’s operations and processes.

“Thus technology s is necessary to ensure continuous fiscal transparency and accountability,” the NDDC MD added.

Ogbuku also emphasised the centrality of finance and supply in the activities of the NDDC, stating that the operations of the directorate would be progressively automated to enhance effectiveness and improve public dealings with the Commission, including remote access to the status of payments to promote transparency.

He advised the finance personnel against being careless with documentation in the discharge of their duties as accounting officers and auditors of the commission, noting that proper documentation was critical in all transactions.

He added, “This retreat should address major concerns facing the Commission, such as the huge debt burden facing us and come up with salient recommendations and key action points.”

Speaking earlier, the Director, Finance and Supply, Kunemofa Asu, stated that training was crucial in upscaling the NDDC’s management processes to enhance efficiency and accountability in service delivery to the people of the Niger Delta region.

Asu said that the annual retreat, which had the theme, “The Role of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, in the attainment of the Renewed Hope Agenda: The Directorate of Finance and Supply as a Case Study,” was designed to chart a new path for the overall development of the Niger Delta Region.

“Training is an indispensable component of our professional growth and organisational success. It is an opportunity to strengthen our skills and learn new ones, helping to boost individual performance in the discharge of our duties as staff of the Finance and Supply Directorate of NDDC.”

Presenting a paper titled, “The Niger Delta Development Commission, as an Interventionist Agency; The Journey So Far,” one of the resource persons, Uche Ejiofor observed that the NDDC Act identified the oil companies as critical partners in the Commission’s financial sustainability.

Ejiofor, therefore, advised the Commission to review its strategies to maximise the contributions of the oil companies to its funding.

Court okays Nigerian govt to take over N12bn properties linked to ex-CBN Gov, Emefiele

A Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the permanent forfeiture of properties valued at over N12 billion allegedly linked to Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
This comes after an earlier court order granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) temporary control of the assets.
The EFCC had accused Emefiele of using proxies to purchase the high-value properties, primarily located in affluent areas of Abuja, with funds suspected to be derived from fraudulent activities.
The anti-graft agency presented evidence during court proceedings, though details regarding the specific nature of the alleged fraud remain undisclosed.
Chukwujekwu Aneke, the judge, had ordered an interim forfeiture of the properties on June 5.
The properties are located in upmarket areas of the federal capital territory (FCT).

Aneke ordered the anti-graft agency to publish the order in a national newspaper, for any interested party to show cause why the final order of forfeiture should not be made.
The properties were listed by the EFCC in two schedules — A and B.
The judge said: “Having carefully considered the application and submission of counsel, it is hereby ordered as follows: that a final forfeiture order of this honorable court is hereby made forfeiting to the Federal Government of Nigeria, properties contained in Schedule A herein which were traced and reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities.
“That a final forfeiture order of this Honourable Court is hereby made forfeiting to the Federal Government of Nigeria, properties contained in Schedule B herein which properties were traced to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities.”
Emefiele, who has not yet commented publicly on the court’s decision, is facing separate criminal trials. He has previously denied any wrongdoing.

Togo lifts suspension on foreign journalists

Togo lifts suspension on foreign journalists

Togo authorities said they will lift a suspension on accreditations for foreign journalists imposed in April after a highly contested constitutional reform.

The High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication suspended accreditations before legislative elections that saw President Faure Gnassingbe’s ruling party extend his family’s political dynasty.

HAAC had said the suspension was because of “serious failures” in the coverage of Togo’s politics by French media and issues with a French journalist who was expelled from Togo.

“The suspension of the accreditation of foreign press organisations for the coverage of news and demonstrations in Togo is lifted as of Wednesday, June 26,” HAAC said in a statement issued late Friday.

Reporters Without Borders had denounced the suspension as a violation of freedom of information.

Gnassingbe’s Union for the Republic (UNIR) party won 108 of the 113 parliament seats in the election in the small West African state.

Under the constitutional reform, the presidency becomes a largely ceremonial post elected by lawmakers. Power shifts to a new president of the council of ministers. That position will automatically be taken by the head of the ruling party, in this case, Gnassingbe as the UNIR leader.

It means Gnassingbe can regain the post every six years if his party maintains a parliamentary majority. Critics called the reform an “institutional coup” tailored for Gnassingbe to evade term limits on his presidency.

Army cracks down on oil thieves in Abia, destroys 14 boats

Army cracks down on oil thieves in Abia, destroys 14 boats

The Nigerian Army on Friday, destroyed about 14 illegal oil bunkering vessels arrested with stolen crude oil in the oil-bearing Asa Community of Abia.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Army operatives set the vessels ablaze, including eight large Cotonou boats, at Isimmiri Waterside in Ukwa West Local Government Area.

The General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, who led the operation, told newsmen that six suspects were arrested in connection with the illegal oil bunkering.

Dada, who was accompanied by the  Commander, 14 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ohafia, Brig.-Gen. Olusola Diya said that the suspects had been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigations and prosecution.

He said that the Army was at the creek in respect of carrying out one of the mandates of Operation Udoka, “Which is to make sure that any form of economic sabotage does not happen within its joint operation area.

“We have been here since Thursday, conducting operations against saboteurs that are trying to take out the crude oil that is the mainstay of our economy,” he said.

Dada also said that the operation was based on an intelligence report, adding that the suspects had attempted to start siphoning the crude from the pipeline before they were arrested.

He further said that the suspects had sunk some crude oil-laden boats in the water before the troops got there, adding that, the troops were in the process of recovering others.

The GOC said that all 14 boats were destroyed, in line with the Standing Operating Procedure.

“The person that is involved in this particular location is on the run presently but we will get him, it’s just a matter of time.

“This is more of a cartel and we believe that a lot of people are involved. The proceeds are being used to finance these acts of terrorism.

“But as a note of warning, this is just the beginning. We will continue with this operation and make sure no stone is left unturned. The Nigerian Army will in no way tolerate any form of sabotage to the economy of this country,” Dada said.

Adewale’s ward counters SEC, says suspension  illegal

Adewale’s ward counters SEC, says suspension  illegal

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party Ward M1, Alimosho Local Government Area in Lagos, said the party’s former State Chairman, Otunba Segun Adewale (aka Aeroland) remains a bonafide PDP member at the ward.

Recall that Adewale whose political base is Alimosho, was suspended by the PDP LGA exco for allegedly causing disaffection in the party and tarnishing the party’s image.

Adewale’s suspension was announced by Alhaji Isiaka Shodiya, the PDP Chairman in Alimosho LGA , at a news conference on June 11 in Lagos.

Similarly, the Lagos State PDP Executive Committee on Friday ratified the indefinite suspension of Adewale, acting on  petitions from the LGA executive against the party chieftain.

In a letter signed by the State Secretary, Mr Soji Orioye, the PDP Executive Committee, also said Adewale’s ward had notified it about his suspension, via a letter.

However, the PDP Chairman, Ward M1, in Alimosho LGA, Mr Kenneth Nwaeze, said the party chieftain was never suspended at the ward.

In a communique issued after the ward executive meeting on Friday, Nwaeze said  Adewale remained a bonafide member of the party and should be accorded due respect as a party member.

Describing Adewale as major party financier at the ward, Nwaeze said that his purported suspension by the LGA and State Executive Committee  was illegal.

The chairman said: “We are pleased to inform the general public and PDP stakeholders nationwide that the ward M1 executive dissociates Itself from the purported suspension of Otunba Segun Adewale (Aeroland) from our party.

“We have not ,for once, have any reason ,whatsoever, to set up a disciplinary committee against Adewale, whom we hold in high esteem and had recently passed a vote-of-confidence in him as a law abiding, loyal, committed and major financier of our great party at the ward, LGA and state level.”he said.

He said that the news of the ratification of Adewale’s suspension by the state executive committee came to the ward leaders as a surprise .

“We are bold to inform the party leadership nationwide that we didn’t carry out any disciplinary procedure against Otunba Segun Adewale and were not consulted either by the LGA or state before any disciplinary action was unconstitutionally taken,” he said.

He called on the PDP State Secretary, Mr Soji Orioye, to kindly remove the part where he stated that the suspension of Adewale was carried out by the ward.

“This is a malicious fabrication capable of instigating disunity among the peace-loving and long-suffering members of our ward, who have sacrificed for the party in the past. This is an act of incrimination on our part.

“While we continue to show maximum respect for the higher level of our great party, we expected that for the state to ratify an ill-fated suspension of a prominent financier of the party in the state, the state executive or perhaps the State Secretary or Legal Adviser would exercise  due diligence.

“The party leaders should have constituted a fact-finding committee to get to the root of the matter at the ward level before taking any  action,” Nwaeze said.

He said that the ward leaders believed that the state executive must have been misinformed that the suspension was carried out by the ward as evident in the ratification letter.

“We also wish to state clearly that the LGA cannot usurp or override the legitimate and constitutional authorities and procedures vested in the ward executive by our party constitution.

“The purported suspension of Aeroland by the LGA was carried out in bad faith and in total disregard of the constitution of our party which empowers the ward executive to carry out the suspension of a member of our party.

“The disciplinary procedures against erring members as clearly stated in our party Constitution section (57) 1 to 7 is unambiguous.

“The body of the purported suspension letter written by the LGA executive and the procedure was not in any way in conformity with the party Constitution as stated above,” he added.

He said that the state executive acted without consultation and investigation before taking action, saying at no time was the party chieftain questioned over any act of misconduct at the ward.

“Segun Adewale at the moment remains the most popular figure in Lagos PDP as evident in the result of the 2023 general election ,where he garnered the highest votes for our party as Lagos West senatorial candidate.“Adewale deserves utmost respect and appreciation from all levels and organs of the party for his moral and financial contributions to the growth and electoral performance of our party in Lagos State.

“He remains a prominent and one of the topmost financiers of our party in the state,” Nwaeze said.

Kano warns residents to avoid drinking rainwater

Kano warns residents to avoid drinking rainwater

The Kano State Government has advised residents against drinking rainwater to prevent the spread of cholera as the rainy season has set in.

The advice was contained in a statement on Saturday, by the Head of the Public Relations Unit, Ministry of Health, Ibrahim Abdullahi and issued to newsmen on Saturday.

Abdullahi said the advice was necessary because usually, the rainy season comes up with cholera complications which some states in the country have already fallen victim to.

“Hence, it is necessary to warn and remind the people that prevention is better than cure. People should always examine what they take, most importantly vegetables, fruits and drinking water. People need to be wary in this regard to protect themselves from contaminated food or water.

“It is important for people to understand that the rainwater at the beginning of the rainy season is unclean. If one must use it, it must then be purified using water treatment substances, including boiling and filtering before use.

“This will help greatly to safeguard people against the bondage of cholera.”

The Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf also urged people to always wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly with clean water before consumption because they are mostly purchased from the markets with little cleanliness.

Yusuf assured that the state Governor, Abba Yusuf’s administration will continue to give all the needed attention to the healthcare of the people of the state, adding that health is one of the aspects that the governor accords maximum priorities.

Labaran urged people to report to the nearest health facility as soon as possible whenever they fall ill, praying for the safety of Kano state and its people against cholera and other illnesses

Cholera is an endemic and seasonal disease, occurring annually mostly during the rainy season and more frequently in areas with poor sanitation.

On Thursday, the World Health Organisation announced a spike in cholera in several regions of the world with almost 195,000 cases and over 1,900 deaths reported in 24 countries since the start of 2024.

Apapa faction makes u-turn, backs Abure as LP chair

Apapa faction makes u-turn, backs Abure as LP chair

A year after the leadership of the opposition Labour Party was separated with the incumbent National Chairman, Julius Abure and the Deputy National Chairman of the party (South), Lamidi Apapa laying claim to the mantle of leadership, both camps have agreed to sheath their swords and work together.

Loyalists from both camps were torn apart in April 2023 following a court judgment restraining Abure and three others from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

But Abure fought back fiercely to retain his seat with the help of the parent body, Nigeria Labour Congress, under the leadership of its National President, Joe Ajaero.

The embattled LP chairman, however, fell out of favour with the NLC following a contentious national convention held in Anambra that returned him and all his loyal members of the National Working Committee to office three months ago.

Despite a series of picketing at LP secretariats nationwide and other threats by the unionists amid calls for an expansive and inclusive convention that should start from the grassroots, Abure did not budge.

The action subsequently compelled the NLC Political Commission to void the new leadership and set up a transition committee, saddled with the task of engaging stakeholders of the party and conducting a fresh convention in 90 days.

A source at the LP national secretariat, who preferred anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, explained that Abure felt the urgent need to close rank with the Lamidi Apapa’s faction following the open revolt and media war from its Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi as well as the pressure from the NLC.

“It is the only logical way for him to have a united front against the threat of the NLC in particular. I believe you already know Abure has a long history with Lamidi Apapa and Abayomi Arabambi before now,” the source explained.

When The According contacted the Apapa’s camp, the factional spokesman, Abayomi Arabambi, confirmed the development.

Arabambi told our reporter that they had no problem with Abure from the outset because they knew he was being influenced and misled by some leading officers of the NLC.

He said, “We are together to stop all those political hawks from taking over our party. We thought they (NLC) were fighting for a just cause. But it is very obvious they only want to take over our party and we are not going to accept that. We in the Lamidi Apapa group are not lawbreakers like those who supported Abure in disobeying the court order. I have said this several times on air.

“It was because of this threat that Abure extended an olive branch for all of us to bond together. It was obvious that these people were not only with him to fight us but to take over the control of the party. So we cannot be outside and allow some people to take over our party. That was why Abure asked us to come together in the party’s interest.

“We are here to fight those people who want to use the Labour Party to foment trouble and destabilize the country. That is what we are against. Nobody is contesting or running for any election now. We know the next race is in 2027. Why should we now be seeking ways to bring the nation down? We are averse to that.”

He added, “I also want you to know that there is nothing like Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign here anymore. It has been dissolved. Everybody has reverted to former governorship and presidential candidate. We don’t want disinformation at the Labour Party.

“Again, you recall that there was a crisis in APC and the PDP. Yet, the warring parties came together and resolved it. So what stopped us from resolving ours? When you are fighting, there is no permanent enemy. It is all about permanent interest.”

Efforts to get Abure to react to the report were unsuccessful.

But the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, also confirmed the reunion, saying there was nothing out of place for Abure to extend olive branches to aggrieved members of the party.

He said, “Labour Party is united. We do not have a division in the sense that as a party that came out of the election hugely successful with a lot of results to show, several people would want to have a stake in the Labour Party. The implication is that a lot of stone-throwing and interest will begin to manifest. But the Labour Party has a constitution and it has a rule completely spelt out.

“Anybody that tries to go out of it will get his hand burnt because the law will not support what you are doing just as the NLC is doing. Besides, we have never seen the Lamidi Apapa people as having their camp because there’s only one camp. That is the one led by Julius Abure.

“Of course, they have the right to be aggrieved and take positions that are not aligned with the interest of the party. But as soon as they discovered it was not the right way, I think they took the better decision to begin to retrace their steps. That is what we have seen.”

He stated further, “Many people who were involved in anti-party activities in the past are beginning to discover that the laws are not on their side. The best thing is to retrace their steps and return to the fold.

“So many other persons have indicated interest in returning to the party. LP does not have any problem with that. Our doors are wide open. If you are out in the cold and you need shelter in the Labour Party, we will bring you back and shelter you.

“The distinguished gentleman you just mentioned (Arabambi) is still our member. He has also recognised Julius Abure as the only national chairman. The party is coming together and I can tell you that the party is a lot more united now than ever.”
