Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reassured all law-abiding residents of of their safety, in face of recent attacks on security agencies in the state.
Otti, who stated this on Sunday, while addressing worshippers at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Aba, told the people not to be discouraged or panic because of the recent ugly events.
The governor, who blamed the attacks on the handiwork of the enemies of the state who he said, are opposed to the new lease of life under his administration, reiterated that the state government will fish out those responsible for the recent attacks against the security agents.
Otti, who was in the church with top members of his cabinet, declared that the state has no space for criminals and thanked members of the church for their supports for him before and after elections.
Earlier in his sermon, the guest preacher at the Mass, Rev Fr Okechi Kelvin, thanked God for the using Governor Otti to do new things in Abia.
It would be recalled that five Nigerian Army officers were killed at Obikabia junction, Aba by unidentified persons in May, 2024.
Also, two policemen were last week Friday, killed at Opobo road, Aba, by yet-to-be identified hoodlums.

FG terminates contracts with three firms for non-performance
The Federal Ministry of Works has terminated contracts with three companies – Mothercat Ltd, Dantata & Sawoe Construction Ltd, and RCC Ltd – due to non-performance on the dualization of the Obajana-Benin road project.
According to a statement on Monday by the Special Adviser (Media) to the Minister of Works, Orji Uchenna, the termination was necessary due to the inordinate delay and failure of the companies to fulfil their contractual obligations.
The Minister, David Umahi, directed engineers to take over the sites and measure the work done to facilitate the takeover from the companies.
He noted that the contracts, worth billions of naira, were awarded in 2012 but were abandoned by the contractors, leaving road users to suffer due to the deplorable condition of the road.
The Minister warned that the government will not tolerate acts of unseriousness and sabotage by contractors, stating that “going forward, all funded but non-performing contracts shall be terminated.”
This move is seen as a bold step by the Renewed Hope administration to address the country’s infrastructure challenges.
“We will not condone any act that will hinder our progress. We are determined to change the narrative of Nigeria’s road infrastructure”, Umahi said.
The terminated contracts include Contract No. 6136 with Mothercat Ltd for the dualization of Obajana-Benin road, section II (Okene-Auchi) in Kogi/Edo State; Contract No. 6137 with Dantata & Sawoe Construction Ltd for the dualization of Obajana-Benin road, section III (Auchi-Ehor) in Edo State; Contract No. 6138 with RCC Ltd for the dualization of Obajana-Benin road, section IV (Ehor-Benin) in Edo State.

Two die as truck, bus collide on Sagamu-Benin expressway
Two persons have lost their lives in the early hours of Monday when a passenger bus rammed into a truck along the Sagamu-Benin Expressway.
This is just as four other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries while 14 escaped unhurt.
The spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the vehicles involved were an unregistered Howo truck and a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number BEN 823 ZW.
Akinbiyi disclosed further that the accident occurred due to speeding on the part of the bus driver which led to loss of control and eventual collision with the truck.
He added that 20 persons were involved in the accident comprising 15 males and five females.
“There is a road traffic accident at Area Command hill, Inbound Ijebu Ode, on Sagamu-Benin Expressway at about 0630hrs on 01/07/2024. Two vehicles were involved including a Howo truck with no registration number and a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BEN 823 ZW.
“According to eyewitnesses, the accident was caused by excessive speed on the part of the bus driver leading to loss of control thereby crashing into the truck. The victims are 15 males and five females with four injured and two dead.”
The TRACE spokesperson disclosed that the remains of the dead victims were deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital morgue while the injured were taken to the same hospital for treatment.
“Accident victims have been rescued to OOUTH while the bodies of the two dead victims were deposited at OOUTH morgue,” Akinbiyi stated.

Abuja estate developer, Valington Homes incures N10.5m fine in court over tresspas on FCT land
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has imposed a fine of N10.5 million on an Abuja-based estate developer, Valington Homes and Property Development Services, for unlawful trespass on a plot of land in the FCT.
The land, allocated by the FCT authorities to Adebayo Opabiyi, was said to have been forcefully encroached upon by the company years after the lawful allocation was carried out.
Delivering judgment in a suit instituted by Adebayo Opabiyi against the estate development company, Justice Edward Ekpo held that the plaintiff successfully established his ownership of the land known as Plot 285 at the Jikwoyi Extension District of Abuja with valid documents from the FCT.
The judge held that the company was wrong in moving earth equipment, especially excavators, to the land to destroy developments carried out by the owner for the purpose of establishing its own presence on the land.
Justice Ekpo therefore ordered the company to pay the plaintiff N10 million as compensation for the willful destruction of properties on the land.
He also ordered that another N500,000 be paid by the company to the plaintiff as the cost of prosecuting the case.
Justice Ekpo further directed that 10 per cent of the fine must be paid annually by the company until the judgement debt is fully liquidated.

WHO steps in as cholera outbreak hits Kirikiri prison
The World Health Organisation, WHO, has donated pharmaceutical support to the Lagos State Government as it recorded 25 cases of cholera outbreak at the Kirikiri prison.
Prof Akin Abayomi, Commissioner for Health, made this known while giving an update on the cholera outbreak in the state, stating that urgent environmental and medical intervention measures had been implemented with success.
“We were able to supply Kirikiri Medium Prison with intravenous fluids, infection prevention and other health consumables.
“The WHO has donated 10,000 doses of pharmaceuticals to the prison to support prison health facilities with prevention strategies for about 3,200 inmates if required.”
Recall that the commissioner stated two weeks ago that the source of the outbreak was unregulated street beverages and contaminated water supplies.

ASO ROCK WATCH: As Shettima dons the laundryman hat. One other talking point
The Vice President, Kashim Shettima, last week, stressed that his principal, President Bola Tinubu meant well for Nigeria’s north.
One other story from the Presidency was also reviewed for your reading delight.
1.Donning the laundryman hat
On June 26, Shettima said contrary to the views of some critics, Tinubu loved the north, and was not indifferent to the challenges of insecurity, and food security, bedeviling the region.
Speaking when he received a delegation from the Federal Government led by Femi Gbajabiamila, who were in Kano on a condolence visit, he had said: “…the President is a good man and with clean heart. He means well for Kano, for the North and the nation.”
Three days later, on June 29, Shettima fired back at those who made mockery of Tinubu’s misstep at Eagles Square, Abuja, during the democracy day celebration on June 12.
He was quoted as having said at a PEBEC Town Hall Meeting in Abuja, “When the President stumbled…It is not only disheartening and disenchanting, but stultifying and heartbreaking that some of our countrymen were celebrating.”
The Vice President’s seeming laundryman interventions may speak to desperate moves to fix certain perceived reputation management gaps observed in Tinubu’s unstable media team.
If that is not the case, then it could well be that Shettima has appointed himself ‘chief laundry officer’ to either impress his principal or occupy himself further, as his office may have had little tasks to deliver.
In the absence of both conjectures, Shettima’s remarks may have positioned the Vice President as a smart salesman determined to persuade the public about the values being delivered by the government and or the unappreciated worth of the country’s leadership.

Either way, Shettima gets commended for staying steadfast.

2. Ensuring cohesion among state governors
On June 27, President Tinubu encouraged state governors to work together to meet the needs of Nigerians.
“Our states must work together to deliver on the critical reforms required of us to meet the needs of our people. Time is humanity’s most precious asset. You can never have enough of it. It is getting late,” the president stated in Abuja.
Tinubu’s admonition, again, serves as a reminder of Nigeria’s fragile federal structure which has been bogged down by certain ill-defined relationships where the president is seen as a school headmaster dishing out instructions!
Until the needful is done by way of an honest conversation on the Nigerian project, the president may well be speaking to a bunch of greedy helmsmen whose driving goal is to corner state resources for private ends.
The critical question often asked, however, is does the centre hold better performance than the states? The answer may be blowing in the wind.

Varsities governing councils to be inaugurated July 4
The Governing Councils of Federal universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions will be inaugurated on July 4, 2024.
The Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, made this known while giving her acceptance speech on Monday, while assuming the affairs of the institution.
A total of 560 individuals were appointed to the governing councils and boards of Federal Government-owned tertiary institutions.
President Bola Tinubu approved the reconstitution of the Governing Councils and Boards of federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
In an earlier statement, the Permanent Secretary, General Services, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Nnamdi Mbaeri, noted that the approval was given for the effective management of Nigerian tertiary institutions across the country.
For the University of Ibadan, the President appointed Chief Bisi Akande as the Chairman of the governing council. The board members are Alexander Ajipe, Nelson Alapa, Ifeoma Nwankwo, and Prof. Emmanuel Alo.
Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) was appointed as the Chairman of the governing council of the University of Lagos. The council members are Bello Kumo, Prof. Idowu Mark, Niyi Akande, and Bola Njoku
Isa Yuguda chairs the board of the National Open University. The council members are Goddy Etta, Yomi Balogun, Deborah Apah, and Hingah Biem.
Siyan Oyeweso was appointed to head the governing council of Obafemi Awolowo University, while Edward Sarki; Joseph Abaagu; Wahaab Owokoniran, and Abubakar Kachaalla are members of the council.
Adebayo Shittu, Muiz Banire, and Senator Florence Ita Giwa were appointed as the chairpersons of the governing boards for David Umahi University of Medicine in Ebonyi State, Federal University of Transportation in Katsina State, and Federal Polytechnic in Ugep, Cross River State, respectively among others.
BREAKING: Court dismisses Nnamdi Kanu’s N1bn suit against FG
Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, dismissed the fundamental human rights suit filed by the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, against the Federal Government.
Kanu sued the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Department of State Service for N1 billion in damages for alleged rights violations.
The IPOB leader, in the suit marked FHC/CS/1633/2023, claimed that the DSS and its Director General violated his right to a fair hearing by allegedly preventing his lawyers from having unhindered interactions with him while he was being detained in preparation for his defence in his criminal trial.
Justice Omotosho, while delivering a judgment on the suit, held that Kanu failed to provide credible evidence to sustain his claims that his interactions with his lawyers were interfered with, that he was denied unhindered access to his lawyers, and that DSS officials eavesdropped on his conversations with his lawyers, which constituted a breach of his right to a fair hearing.
