Polish PM warns of ‘dangerous’ turn after French election

0

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned Monday of a “very dangerous” turn for France and Europe after the far right won the first round of pivotal French elections.

“This is all really starting to smell very dangerous,” said former EU chief Tusk, who also made allegations about “Russian influence” in “many parties of the radical right in Europe”.

“Even the complete victory of the radical right of Mrs. (Marine) Le Pen’s camp does not signal the loss of power by the centre represented by President (Emmanuel) Macron,” Tusk told reporters in Rzeszow, a vital hub for Western aid to Ukraine.

“But it is a very clear sign of what is happening not only in France but also in some other countries, also in Western Europe,” he added, without specifying any additional European countries.

The former European Council president also spoke of a “dangerous trend”, and pointed to fears that “France can soon become the sick person of Europe because it will be forced to confront these radical forces”.

“Foreign forces and enemies of Europe are engaged in this process, hiding behind these movements,” he added, without giving further details.

France saw the far-right come in well ahead at the weekend in the first round of snap legislative elections called after President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly three weeks earlier.

They emerged in first place with 33 per cent of the vote, compared to 28 per cent for the left-wing New Popular Front alliance, and more than 20 per cent for Macron’s centrist camp, according to preliminary results.

UAV crashed not helicopter, NAF explains

0

The Nigerian Air Force has refuted claims that its helicopter crashed in the early hours of Monday in Tami village, located in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The spokesman for the NAF, Edward Gabkwet in a statement on Monday, said it was a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and not a helicopter as earlier believed.

Gabkwet said, “A NAF Unmanned Aerial Vehicle experienced a mishap after take-off for a mission, at a location near Rumji Village and about 15 Km from the Base. Since it is an unmanned vehicle, there were no casualties on board or on the ground.

“A preliminary investigation has since commenced to ascertain what may have caused the mishap. Nigerians can rest assured that this minor setback will not, in any way, impinge on all ongoing operations.”

In the wake of the incident, a team of Airforce personnel from the Nigerian Air Force Air Training Centre and 401 Flying School were said to have cordoned off the scene to secure the area for emergency rescue operations and also investigate the cause of the crash.

Earlier, some locals stated that a helicopter belonging to the NAF in the early hours of Monday crashed in Tami village causing alarm among residents.

The helicopter which was on a routine operational flight reportedly encountered technical difficulties that resulted in the crash.

Fortunately, the pilot successfully executed emergency protocols and emerged from the wreckage largely unscathed.

Nollywood actor, Lawori, accuses NURTW boss, Koko Zaria of assault

0

The Nigeria Police said it would probe an allegation by a popular Nollywood actor, Lawori, against a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Ganiyu Oyedepo, popularly known as Koko Zaria, involving an attack in which the former suffered a wound to his head.

This was disclosed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Monday.

The actor, in a video shared early Monday by an X user, Oyindamola, tweeting as #dammiedammie35, narrated how a bottle of alcoholic drink was smacked on his head at the 2024 Idimu Day event held last Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

According to the actor, who revealed the stitched wound on his head, while pleading for justice from well-meaning Nigerians, said he was one of the Masters of Ceremony at an event.

While doing his work, he said an unknown man came on the stage to tell him that the NURTW chief called for him, which he obliged.

Lawori narrated, “As I went to meet Koko Zaria to greet him, he asked if I didn’t see them here. Then I apologised and said I would do the needful when I returned to the stage.

“I then heard somebody ask if I was Lawori, thinking that he (the person) didn’t know me and was meeting me for the first time. It was later confirmed to him that I’m Lawori.

“While I was talking with Koko Zaria and I turned, the man took a bottle of Martell (in front of Koko Zaria and his guys) and broke it on my head.”

The actor added that he was “wet” with his blood as he lost consciousness due to the attack. He noted that he could only recall how his head was stitched at the hospital, which has brought him pain.

“Nigerians, please help me. It was Koko Zaria who sent someone to call me,” he said, adding that he doesn’t remember how he landed at the hospital.

“Save me from Koko Zaria, I don’t know my offence to him,” he pleaded.

While reacting to the accusation via his Instagram page on Monday, the NURTW chief, using the handle #kokozaria_americaboy, denied the allegation.

“Lawori has never offended me. We’re very close. I saw a video where he said I was the one who ordered the attack on him. What did he do to me?” he queried.

Oyedepo added, “Lawori, I don’t have anything to curse you (sic) but I want you to swear by all you have and your ambition that I ordered the attack.”

The NURTW boss stated that while at the event which witnessed a large crowd in attendance, he called the actor to greet him, and also apologised for not showing up for a work the actor called him to.

Oyedepo recalled that when Lawori returned to the stage, about two people were fighting him as he (Lawori) stopped the music they were enjoying.

He noted that he didn’t go to the event with his boys, saying, “As you were coming from the stage, I saw that people were hitting bottles on your head. I took you to the hospital and you were treated. I stayed with you and paid your medical bill. I even gave you a wad of money. All these happened on Tuesday.”

He noted that he left the hospital with Lawori around 1 a.m., adding that he was the one who alerted the actor’s wife about the incident.

Oyedepo also said the actor called him on the phone on Wednesday and prayed for him to show appreciation.

“I know everything that’s happening. I know those who sent you. I hand you over to God,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PPRO, reacting to the video on X.com on Monday, wrote, “This will be investigated, and justice will be served. Many people have called me on this case. @BenHundeyin, @FCID_ANNEX, @LagosPoliceNG, @PoliceNG.”

Nasarawa records one death, 29 suspected cases

0

The Nasarawa State Government on Monday said it has recorded 29 suspected cases of cholera in the Kokona and Nasarawa Eggon local government areas of the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Gaza Gwamna made this known while speaking at the opening of a 3-day workshop on Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health being hosted by Rotary International in the Akwanga LGA of the state.

The Commissioner explained that in the past few weeks, Kokona LGA recorded 19 suspected cases of cholera while Nasarawa Eggon LGA had 10 cases.

He regretted that one of the patients in the Nasarawa Eggon LGA died while being treated in a healthcare facility in the area.

He said, “We have 19 suspected cases of cholera in Kokona and 10 in Nasarawa Eggon. The one that died in Nasarawa Eggon had diarrhoea and was vomiting, but there was no confirmation that he died of cholera.

“I would want the public to know that cholera has symptoms that are similar to other ailments. We can only say a person has cholera after some laboratory tests have been done, and it is confirmed.

“So, it is not every diarrhoea case that is cholera. Some persons with diarrhoea cases are currently on admission, but we have not confirmed if they have cholera. However, they are being observed by our healthcare workers.”

While expressing gratitude to Rotary International for organising the 3-day workshop, Gaza Gwamna urged the participants to take the training program seriously to report the health challenges affecting women and children in the state accurately.

On his part, the Project Manager of Rotary International Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health, Toyosi Adebambo, explained that the 3-day workshop tagged “Together For Healthy Families In Nigeria”, was to strengthen the skills of media practitioners on effective reporting of RMCH-related issues.

“We expect that at the end of the workshop, journalists will be able to project accurate and informative reports on RMCH interventions and create a pool of champions who will initiate and sustain the discourse on RMCH in the media,” he added.

Rivers announces date for LGA elections

0

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission has announced October 5 for the conduct of local government elections.

The commission made this known on Monday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, after meeting with the leaders of political parties and major stakeholders in the state.

Part of the highlights of the meeting includes the unveiling of the timetable and guidelines for the upcoming local government elections in the state.

The announcement marks the beginning of preparations for the elections after Governor Sim Fubara dissolved the former councils after their tenure expired.

The governor also inaugurated caretaker committees to run the affairs of the local government areas while the ousted chairmen were still laying claims to their seats following the six-month tenure elongation granted them by the Martins Amaewhule-led lawmakers.

To avert bloody clashes, the police had since taken over all the 23 secretariats of local government areas in the state pending the forthcoming judgement of the Court of Appeal.

A policeman and member of a local vigilante outfit were shot dead during a protest in Eberi-Omuma in Omuma LGA of the state, with the police saying the decision to barricade the councils was to forestall further bloodbath.

Manchester United unveil new home kit for 2024/25 season

0

Manchester United have revealed their new home kit for the upcoming 2024/25 season, featuring a bold design inspired by the club’s rich history.

Officially launched on Monday, the iconic red shirt now sports a striking gradient effect, complemented by white trim and white shorts.

The kit marks the beginning of a new sponsorship era for the Red Devils, with Snapdragon taking over as the main shirt sponsor.

This change comes after a lucrative £60million deal was struck with the American tech firm, replacing the previous sponsor, TeamViewer.

The kit’s designer, Adidas, has drawn inspiration from a unique “fluorescent” concept first introduced during the legendary Busby Babes era. This innovative design was originally conceived to help players spot each other more easily under floodlights.

Describing the concept, Adidas explained, “The rayon style fabric appeared to be a different shade of red, depending on how light reflected off it under the stadium’s floodlights. For the 2024-25 expression, bold combinations of red have been blended to form a light to dark red gradient, running down the main body of the shirt – giving the appearance of an ever-changing colour.”

The kit also features a distinctive flame-like red insert along the side panel of both the jersey and shorts.

According to Adidas, this element creates “a connecting line that stands out against the stadium backdrop as players are in motion.”

Perhaps most notably, the kit introduces “a colour expression never seen before on a Manchester United home kit,” further emphasising the club’s commitment to innovation while honouring its storied past.

Fans eager to don the new colours can now purchase the home kit, with adult shirts starting at £80.
