Digital platforms key to entrepreneurial success

Jumia has emphasised on the need for entrepreneurs to embrace digital platforms to boost entrepreneurship development in the country.

In a statement issued to According Online on Friday by the Regional Head of Public Relations & Communication, in Sub-Saharan Africa, Jumia, Robert Awodu, Jumia said digital platforms provide a vital gateway for businesses to reach wider markets, connecting local products and services with consumers both domestically and internationally.

The statement noted that despite facing formidable challenges such as limited access to funding, inadequate infrastructure and administrative barriers, African entrepreneurs are leveraging digital platforms like Jumia to overcome entrepreneurial obstacles and establish a presence for themselves on the global scene.

Jumia added that by 2050, the continent is expected to double its population, with a substantial portion of the global population being African, maintaining that increasing internet penetration and smartphone adoption rates, forms the backdrop against a new wave of emerging entrepreneurs.

“Central to this wave is Jumia, an e-commerce platform that has not only revolutionised how business is conducted, but has emerged as a pivotal force in empowering local entrepreneurs across the continent.

“For instance, Jumia’s digital inclusion initiative in Africa boosts economic growth by enabling SMEs and local entrepreneurs to reach a wider customer base, bypassing traditional location and infrastructure barriers.

“Through its e-commerce marketplace, Jumia has enabled over 11,000 SMEs to connect with millions of consumers, providing them with unprecedented visibility and access to markets,” Jumia said.

The statement noted that annual events like black Friday, brand festivals and tech week have become landmarks, not just for sales records but as opportunities for small businesses to thrive and expand their customer base.

“Jumia’s impact extends beyond commerce. This is a testament to the brand’s laser-focused approach to leveraging digital technology to drive inclusive economic growth.

“Buttressing this, numerous reports indicate that online marketplaces like Jumia could potentially create millions of new jobs in Africa by 2025, offering employment opportunities and contributing to overall economic stability.

“This growth is not limited to major urban centres. Still, it expands to remote areas as Jumia continues its crusade for rural expansion, enhancing accessibility and choice for consumers while empowering local logistics providers and merchants,” the statement read.

Jumia noted that at the heart of this accessibility is collaboration and innovation, pointing out that with Jumia, entrepreneurs access a supportive ecosystem where knowledge sharing and mutual support lead to sustainable business practices and shared prosperity.

“In conclusion, the rise of African entrepreneurs, sustained by digital platforms such as Jumia, marks a transformative moment in the continent’s economic narrative,” the statement averred.

Abiodun changes African youths to lead economic transformation

Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun has described the younger generation across Africa as the catalyst for developing a new economic frontier for the continent.

Abiodun stated this when he received members of the Royal African Young Leadership Forum, an initiative of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi for young men and women of the African continent in Abeokuta on Thursday.

While commending Oba Ogunwusi for starting a movement of evolving leadership for Africa, the governor said that the energy and creativity of members of the forum would help reposition the continent.

He said: “I see young men and women as catalysts for Africa’s structuring of a new economic frontier.

“I believe what Ooni of Ife has started here is not just a forum but a movement, a movement of an evolving African leadership.

He thanked the Ooni of Ife for the initiative and for “and for doing it quietly.”

“I believe that with the energy, creativity, versatility, and innovative thinking that you in that age group bracket possess, you are indeed the leaders of Africa today, and you must constantly remind yourselves of that.

“You must have the drive in you, you must have that spirit in you, you must have that resolve in you and it starts from this kind of association where you are meeting, mingling and sharing ideas, not just within your country, but across different countries,” he said.

Abiodun noted that the forum’s age group from 40 years downward represents between 65% and 70% of the population of the entire world.

Earlier, the Director of the Royal Forum, Tomisin Olawale, noted that the group in the last three years had done transactions in the region worth N300 billion.

He said that the Forum members are creating a new Africa as well as driving the new economic frontier for the continent.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has debunked “in no equivocal terms” rumours that its operatives were responsible for a dead body found hanging by the gate of an Estate along Lagos – Shagamu Expressway, Lagos.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, on Friday debunked the claims circulating on Social Media insinuating that the deceased’s vehicle was impounded by officers of the agency.

Oki confirmed that the body was discovered in the early hours of Thursday, 11th of July, 2004 by passersby and was immediately reported to the police at Shagamu Road, but said the officers of the agency were not responsible for the tragedy as claimed.

A copy of the statement made available to our correspondent read partly, “Several speculations were made by sympathisers present at the scene. Some said he was dressed like a motorcyclist (Okada rider), while some speculated he was a tricyclist (Marwa rider).

“Some even believed he was brought to the scene by his killers during the wee hours of midnight, and stage managed it to give it the semblance of suicide because the victim’s leg was touching the ground.

“For brevity, no one could really identify him as either an Okada or Marwa rider from amongst several operators of Okada and Marwa who visited the scene.”

Oki added, “It is unfortunate that the incident occurred by an Estate gate along the Lagos – Shagamu Expressway.”

While expressing sympathy to the deceased’s family, the General Manager warned those spreading unfounded reports to verify information before disseminating it.

He urged the public, especially motorists, to seek clarification on any traffic information through the Agency’s newly commissioned toll-free call centre (080000527862).

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was evacuated by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, Yaba, Lagos.

Presidency sets up committee to tackle hunger

The Presidency has inaugurated the Presidential Food Systems Coordination Unit saddled with the responsibility of finding a lasting solution to the food security crisis and the rising cost of food items in the country.

The unit which will be chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, comprises some state governors, representatives of local governments, development partners, and other critical stakeholders.

The group is to coordinate all agricultural activities in Nigeria.

According to a statement obtained from the X account of the spokesman for Vice President, Kashim Shettima, Stanley Nkwocha, after inaugurating the Presidential Food Systems Coordination Unit (PFSCU) at the behest of President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, Shettima said Nigeria is facing a rare food security crisis that urgently requires the ideas and resources of stakeholders.

“The nation is facing a rare food security crisis and the sooner we come to terms with the reality, the better,” Shettima’s spokesman quoted his principal as saying.

“Food insecurity endangers the very basis of our democratic experiment and this is why all hands have to be on deck. We are in a food security crisis but it also provides us the opportunity to re-engineer and reposition the nation on a firmer footing”.

Some of the state governors at the meeting applaud the initiative which they described as apt in addressing the current situation in the country.

The move comes in the wake of the soaring cost of food items in Nigeria with the inflation rate now at 33.69 per cent.

Stakeholders have blamed the development on multiple issues including insecurity with armed men holding sway in some parts of the country’s food belt.

Determined to correct the narrative, President Bola Tinubu had about a year ago declared an emergency on food security.

“There must be an urgent synergy between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Water Resources to ensure adequate irrigation of farmlands and to guarantee that food is produced all year round,” the President Tinubu was quoted as saying.

Tinubu also pledged to “engage our security architecture to protect the farms and the farmers so that farmers can return to the farmlands without fear of attacks”.

Many Nigerians protested the rising cost of food and other items in the country early this year.
The protests which started in Niger State gradually spread to Ogun, Oyo, and some parts of Lagos State before the governments came up with measures to address the problem and prevent the breakdown of law and order.

Court delays ruling on DNA application, urges settlement option

The Chief Magistrates Court in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State has adjourned proceedings on the DNA application filed to determine the paternity of the son of late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad.

This followed the collapse of settlement talks between the Aloba family and the respondent – the late Mohbad’s wife, Wunmi.

According to a statement by the representative of the family’s legal team, Monisola Odumosu, which was obtained by According Online on Friday, the court, during its sitting on July 9, 2024, directed both parties to explore an alternative dispute resolution, leading to closed-door negotiations that ultimately failed to yield an agreement.

Odumosu, in the statement, explained that the failed negotiation by both parties was due to some “external factors.”

The statement partly read, “Emmanuel Oroko of Hillceetee Partners, representing Joseph Aloba, informed the court that despite earnest efforts, the settlement talks broke down due to external factors. M.K.O Orire Esq., representing the respondent, confirmed the breakdown in negotiations during the resumed hearing.”

“In response to petitions from both legal teams, the presiding Magistrate, His Honour Mrs A.B Olagbegi-Adelabu adjourned the suit to allow for the hearing of all pending applications related to the DNA test. The court urged the parties to continue exploring settlement options before the next hearing date,” it added.

Before now, the Aloba family’s legal team had applied to the court for a DNA test when the paternity of the child with the late singer’s wife became an issue on social media.

The family, however, insisted on the test while citing the circumstances surrounding the deceased’s death.

The statement also clarified that no spokesperson has been officially designated by the family while disowning any statement made without clearance from its legal team.

Mohbad died at the age of 27, on September 12, 2023, with circumstances surrounding his death sparking controversies on social media.

Police operatives in Baguio City, Philippines, have arrested a 55-year-old woman for a gruesome attack on her husband after sex.
Local authorities said the woman became enraged and attacked the man with a knife after he accidentally mouthed another woman’s name during intimacy.
The suspect, according to the police, waited for the man to fall asleep and grabbed a 10-inch long knife from the kitchen to chop off his penis.
The spokesman for the Baguio police station said officers immediately arrested the woman, who did not try to escape.

He said: “Allegedly, the reason was jealousy because the wife claimed her husband was a womaniser.”
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where medical personnel were attempting to reattach the severed organ.

The large knife used in the assault has been recovered by the police.

Kidnappers abduct Benue Poly Rector, others, demand N70m 

Gunmen have abducted three staff members including the acting Rector of Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, Dr. Emmanuel Barki.

According to a report, Barki, two other management staff of the institution and their driver were kidnapped on their way to Ugbokolo after an official assignment in Makurdi, the state capital, on Thursday.

It was gathered that the abductors kidnapped them along the Otukpo/Otukpa Road.

However, one of the victims was released due to ill health.

A source close to the rector’s family who did not want to be mentioned as he was unauthorised to speak on the matter, said the kidnappers made contact with the family and demanded a N70 million ransom.

The immediate past Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Benue State chapter, Augustine Leva visited the family of the acting rector on Friday as he prayed for the immediate release of the victims.

The former CAN chairman called on the state government to improve the security situation of the state so that residents of the state can heave a sigh of relief.

The spokesman for the state police command, Catherine Anene confirmed the abduction of the rector and two others and said that investigation was ongoing.

“Incident confirmed and investigation is ongoing,” Anene said in a terse statement.

Also confirming the kidnap, the Security Adviser to the state governor, Joseph Har said he was not aware of any ransom demand.

Har said, “The incident happened but I’m not aware they demanded ransom but security men are combining the bushes to rescue them.”

In late May 2024, two female students of the Joseph Sarwuan University of Agriculture, Makurdi, were kidnapped by gunmen, as confirmed by the state police command.

Forex: CBN sells $122.67m to 46 authorised dealers

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has sold $122.67 million to 46 authorised Bureau De Change (BDC) dealers in the country.
This was in line with the apex bank’s determination to promote stability and reduce market volatility in the foreign exchange market.
The CBN Director in charge of Financial Markets, Dr. Omolara Duke, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
She said $67,500 was sold to 27 dealers, while the sum of $2.5 million was bought from one authorised dealer on July 10.

The statement read: “The range of the bid for the July 10, 2024 sales was ₦1,480.0/US$- ₦1,500.0/US$, while the value date for the payments, going by the settlement cycle of two days, is July 12, 2024.
“Similarly, on July 11, 2024, the sum of $55,171m was sold to 19 authorised dealers at ₦1,540.0/US$, and no FX was purchased. The value date for the payments of the spot sale is July 15, 2024.”
The apex bank urged all authorised dealers to ensure that foreign exchange purchases from the CBN are used exclusively for trade-backed transactions to be reported within 72 hours.

Kogi gov extols Appeal Court for affirming election victory

Governor Ahmed Ododo of Kogi State has welcomed the Appeal Court’s judgment that upheld the May 27 decision of the Kogi State governorship election petition tribunal.

In a statement signed and issued by the Special Assistant to the governor on Media, Ismail lsah, on Friday, the governor thanked the people of Kogi State for their support and expressed appreciation to the judiciary for the swift and expeditious manner in which it dealt with the appeal.

He also said the court has again demonstrated that the mandate was freely given to him by the people of the state.

“I give thanks to God for seeing us through this phase of the court processes and I thank the people of Kogi state for uniting behind our administration and the steps we are taking to serve our people to the best of our ability.

“The judgement of the Appeal Court reaffirms the fact that the November 2023 Governorship election in Kogi State was free, fair, peaceful, and credible. By the grace of God, our administration has become the symbol of peace and unity in our state and we are committed to serving our people based on equity and inclusion.

“I thank the judiciary for staying true to its independence with this judgement of the Appeal Court that has reaffirmed the earlier decision of the Tribunal which is a clear testament that the mandate freely given to us by the people of Kogi State was done in the best interest of our state,” Ododo said.

He called on opposition politicians in the state to join him in advancing the development of the state, stressing that the judgement of the appeal court should now lay to rest the argument over the result of the 2023 governorship election and unite the people for the development of the state irrespective of political differences.

The governor also appreciated President Bola Tinubu for ensuring that the judiciary remains truly independent and transparent as the last hope of the common man in the country.

The Appeal Court had on Thursday upheld the May 27 decision of the Kogi State governorship election petition tribunal which upheld the election of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected Governor of Kogi State having scored 446,237 votes which represents the majority of lawful votes cast in the November 11, 2023 Governorship election in the state.

The Appeal Court in a unanimous decision dismissed all grounds of appeals filed by candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Action Alliance (AA) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) for being incompetent and for lacking in merit
