President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr Saleh Abubakar as the new Director-General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW).
Abubakar’s appointment was contained in a statement made available to the press by Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu’s aide on Media and Publicity.
It described Abubakar as a highly experienced public administrator with decades of experience across several sectors.
“The President expects diligence and dedication in driving the agency’s mandate of empowering communities to combat land degradation, enhance food security, and build resilience to climate change through sustainable interventions and education,” Ajuri noted in the statement.

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Mr. Tosin Adeyanju as the new Executive Secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund (NLTF).
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
The President described Adeyanju as an accomplished administrator and good governance advocate.
The statement read: “The President expects the new Chief Executive Officer to ensure transparency and efficiency in the operations of the agency to actualise the objective of the NLTF as a driver of good causes in Nigeria.”

NGF expresses solidarity with Plateau over tragic school incident
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum has expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic school building collapse in Plateau State.
The unfortunate collapse of a building at Saint Academy in Jos, Plateau State, has led to a considerable number of deaths and injuries. Initially, 17 fatalities were reported, but the death toll has now increased to 22, with 154 people injured.
The state authorities, led by the Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, have been actively updating the public on the situation.
On Saturday, Ashoms announced that 74 of the injured victims had been discharged from medical care.
In response to this tragedy, the Plateau State Governor has ordered the immediate closure of the school. This decision aims to ensure the safety of other students and to allow a thorough investigation into the incident.
NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, emphasized that school safety in Nigeria is crucial, and state governments must promptly address any deficiencies.
In a statement by the Acting Head of Media, Ahmed Halimah, on Saturday, the forum praised the prompt response of the rescue teams and the state government’s efforts in handling the crisis.
The statement read in part, “The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), today, expressed deep sorrow and extend their heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic collapse of a school building in Plateau State.
“The incident, which occurred on July 12, resulted in the loss of multiple lives and left many injured.
“The Nigeria Governors’ Forum stands in solidarity with the people of Plateau and the affected families during this difficult time. We commend the swift response of the rescue teams and the efforts of the state government in
managing this crisis.
“As the State Government continues to provide support and comfort to the affected families, the NGF is ready to support efforts to help mitigate the impact of this tragedy and prevent future occurrences.
“Safety in our schools is paramount, and we must take immediate steps to address any lapses. We are committed to supporting Plateau State in providing necessary assistance to the affected families.
“May the Almighty grant the families the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss. Our prayers and thoughts are with Governor Mutfwang, the Busa Buji community, and the entire Plateau State during this difficult time.”

Again President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr Umar Ibrahim Mohammed as the new Director-General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA.
A statement by the presidency on Saturday described Mr Mohammed as an architect, a construction technology and environment professional.
The presidency said it expects improved outcomes in the agency’s objective of operating and maintaining hydrological stations nationwide, as well as carrying out groundwater exploration and monitoring using various scientific techniques to provide hydrological and hydrogeological data needed for planning, design, execution and management of water resources and allied projects.

Nasarawa LP declares support for Abure
Following the ongoing crisis rocking the Labour Party at the national level, the Nasarawa State Chapter of the party has declared total support for the embattled national chairman, Julius Abure.
Reports in some sections of the media have it that the LP National Transition Committee, a body set up by the Nigeria Labour Congress, had withdrawn its support for the Abure-led leadership for not following the due processes to emerge as national chairman of the party.
Speaking with newsmen in Lafia on Saturday after the executive council meeting of the party, the LP State Chairman, Alexander Ombugu, said the leaders and members of the state chapter would continue to remain loyal and committed to the Abure’s leadership.
He explained that the national chairman had been facing difficult times because some persons who were not comfortable with his transparent leadership style wanted him to leave the chairmanship seat at all costs.
He said, “On this issue happening at the national level of our dear party, what I will say is that all of us in the Nasarawa State Labour Party are solidly behind our National Chairman, Julius Abure.
“Some people are only fighting him because the man is too good. They are fighting him because he is a transparent leader. We love him and we will continue to stand by him.
“However, I am surprised that the NLC are having some issues with him. It should not be so because Abure has achieved a lot for the Labour Party. They should rather see how to support him to take the party to greater heights, instead of the disagreements which are capable of taking the party backwards.”
Ombugu further declared the state LP’s support for the Supreme Court’s judgement which granted full autonomy to the 774 Local Government Areas in the country.
He explained that the autonomy which was granted to the LGAs, would enhance democracy at the grassroots level and empower the authorities to make decisions that would have a positive impact on the lives of the rural dwellers.
Oborevwori backs LG autonomy, says N14bn councils fund intact
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori on Saturday declared his support for local governments’ financial autonomy as ruled by the Supreme Court on Thursday.
This is as he said the N14 billion fund accruing to the 25 local councils in the state for the past three months is intact and in the custody of the government waiting for the incoming elected council chairmen to take over.
Oborevwori made the disclosure while speaking with journalists shortly after casting his vote during the local government election at his Osubi community Ward polling centre of Okpe LGA in the state.
He said, “On the issue of the Supreme Court judgment, it does not affect Delta State because in Delta State we don’t tamper with Local Government money.
“As we speak, the money for the past three months is still there. Almost N14 billion is still there waiting for the Chairmen to take over.
“So, we don’t touch government money, we augment. So whether the Supreme Court said they should have autonomy, I believe in financial autonomy.
“As a former Speaker, we were at the forefront of the issue of financial autonomy for the Legislature and for the Judiciary.
“The judgment does not affect Delta State, so we still believe in it.”
Oborevwori described the Delta local government elections as “peaceful, free and fair” while assuring that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party
would emerge victorious.
According to him, the election was a “litmus test to show that we (his administration) are on course with the MORE agenda.”
He said further, “When we did our grand finale, I promised Deltans that we want a free and fair election. That is what we are doing now. Right from time my local government has been doing free and fair and that is what we are replicating here.
“I came through that same process of a free and fair election and with all the opposition, I won with a very high margin.
“So I am assuring Deltans that this election is free and fair. I have been up since monitoring the process and now l am here to cast my vote. I have cast my vote and we are sure that there will be victory for the PDP by the grace of God.”
He added, “Then on the issue of the same court judgment, the Supreme Court has given judgment but you can see that we believe in that same process. That is why when I came in.”
“I did not constitute a transition Committee. I am not in support of the transition Committee the HPMs are the ones handling the place and they were given three months to enable us to do the election today.
“By early next week, those who won will be sworn in by the grace of God.”.
Meanwhile, the Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas has accused Delta State Independent Electoral Commission of non-release of sensitive materials, including result sheets and ballot papers, for the local government council elections held on Saturday.
Speaking with newsmen in Emede, Isoko South, Delta State, Senator Joel-Onowakpo accused DSIEC of colluding with the ruling PDP in the State to deny citizens their fundamental right to vote, thus rendering the election invalid.
The Senator alleged that the PDP, aware of the All Progressives Congress’s readiness to take over local government affairs, conspired with DSIEC to manipulate the electoral process.
“Democracy worldwide is about the will of the people, but DSIEC and the PDP have conspired to deny citizens their right to elect local government leaders. This is undemocratic and unacceptable,” the senator alleged, just as he emphasized that “the non-release of sensitive materials constitutes electoral fraud and compromises the election’s integrity.”
He stressed the need for a constitutional amendment to transfer the power to constitute state electoral commissions from state governors to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has said it is deeply saddened by the news of the collapse of the Saint Academy School building in Busa Buji, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau.
Mr Felix Morka, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja while reacting to the development.
He said that the incident, which claimed the lives of students, staff and injured many others on Friday, July 12, 2024, was regrettable.
“We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the innocent lives lost and best wishes for speedy recovery to those injured by the tragic incident.
“The incident is unbearably heartbreaking as the children and adults killed and injured were in the place they were supposed to be, in school, doing exactly what was expected of them,” Morka said.
He urged the Plateau Government to enforce building control standards more vigorously to guarantee safety and prevent a reoccurrence of a tragedy of this kind.
Morka commended the emergency response led by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and other agencies, including medical personnel that conducted the rescue, evacuation and treatment of victims of the incident.
The APC spokesman prayed God to grant the departed eternal rest and comfort the families they left behind.

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated a former Chairman of According Nigeria Limited, Chief Ajibola Ogunshola, on his 80th birthday.
Ogunshola will be 80 on Sunday, July 14, 2024.
Tinubu conveyed his wishes in a statement signed on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
The statement is titled ‘Tinubu greets Chief Ajibola Olusanya Ogunshola at 80.’
The statement partly reads, “President Bola Tinubu congratulates Chief Ajibola Olusanya Ogunshola, former Chairman of According Nigeria Limited, on his 80th birthday, July 14, 2024.
“Chief Ogunshola, a distinguished Nigerian, was, at various times, Managing Director of Niger Insurance Plc; Chairman of the Committee of Actuaries advising the United Nations Pension Fund, and Chairman of Alexander Forbes Consulting Actuaries.”
Ogunshola was also President of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria.
He is a fellow of the Nigerian Mathematical Society and a past fellow of the Royal Statistical Society of England.
Tinubu celebrated the Baaroyin of Ibadanland on reaching the venerable age of 80 and commended him for his many accomplishments and contributions to the nation across sectors.
He prayed for the continued well-being of Ogunshola and his family.
Ogunshola made history as the first black African to become a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in England in 1973.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Ibadan in 1967.

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr Silas Agara as the new Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment.
