Long history of shootings in US presidential politics

0

Shots were fired during a rally speech by Donald Trump, in an incident that investigators are treating as a possible assassination attempt on the former president.

Including Abraham Lincoln and JFK, here are some notable examples of shootings involving US presidents or presidential candidates:

Ronald Reagan (1981) –

President Reagan was shot and seriously wounded as he left an event at the Hilton hotel in Washington. The attacker was John Hinckley Jr, who was granted unconditional release in 2022.

Reagan spent twelve days in the hospital. The incident boosted Reagan’s popularity, as he displayed humor and resilience during his recovery.

Gerald Ford (1975)

President Ford was left unscathed in two separate assassination attempts by women in September 1975, both in California and within a span of just 17 days.

George Wallace (1972)

While campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination, Wallace was shot four times and paralyzed for life at a shopping mall in Laurel, Maryland.

The assassination attempt on Wallace, who was known for his segregationist views and populist appeal, highlighted the ongoing political tensions in the US and potential for domestic violence in the Vietnam war era.

Robert F. Kennedy (1968)

President John F. Kennedy’s brother Robert, who was running for the Democratic presidential nomination, was shot and killed at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, California.

The assassination had a profound impact on the 1968 presidential race and occurred just two months after the killing of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr, adding to the political turmoil of the late 1960s.

John F. Kennedy (1963)

Riding in his motorcade with his wife Jackie, President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas by Lee Harvey Oswald.

The Warren Commission investigating the assassination concluded in 1964 that Lee Harvey Oswald, a former marine who had lived in the Soviet Union, had acted alone.

Many Americans believe the death of JFK began a more violent period in US politics and society, with the Vietnam War build up and the civil rights struggle as a backdrop.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933)

As president-elect, FDR was the target of an assassination attempt in Miami, Florida. He was unharmed, but Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was killed in the attack.

Theodore Roosevelt (1912) –

Like Trump, Teddy Roosevelt was running for the White House as a former president when he was shot in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The bullet, which remained lodged in his chest for the rest of his life, was slowed by the folded 50-page speech and steel eyeglass case in his breast pocket.

Famously, Roosevelt decided to deliver his scheduled speech despite being shot.

William McKinley (1901) –

President McKinley was shot and killed by anarchist Leon Czolgosz in Buffalo, New York.

Abraham Lincoln (1865)

Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a well-known actor and Confederate sympathizer, while watching a play called “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theater in Washington.

Booth’s attack, just days after the Confederate surrender in the Civil War, was part of a larger plot that included attempts to assassinate Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward.

Napoli reject PSG’s €200m Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia offer

0

Napoli have turned down a mammoth €200m bid from Paris Saint-Germain for Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and his teammate Kvicha Kvaratskhelia, According Sports Extra reports.

According to Italy’s Corriere dello Sport, the French champions tabled the mega offer in an attempt to secure the services of both players. However, Napoli are only willing to consider offers for Osimhen this summer.

PSG’s interest in both players is well documented, but Napoli remain firm in their stance regarding Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian international is considered indispensable, and the club have no intention of parting with him this summer.

Osimhen, who has been heavily linked with a move away from the former Serie A champions, has a release clause in his contract reportedly set at €130m. However, with a lack of concrete proposals, Napoli may be open to negotiating a lower fee for the Nigeria international.

PSG’s interest in the duo comes as no surprise, with the French side desperately seeking marquee signings to fill the void left by Kylian Mbappé’s impending free transfer to Real Madrid.

Newly appointed Napoli head coach Antonio Conte recently provided an update on Osimhen’s situation, stating, “I spoke to Victor, and there are no changes to his situation. He’s a top player.

“He’s a Napoli player today, so he needs to work hard, even if we’ve reached an agreement (for his potential exit), and still we don’t know the outcome of this story.”

Osimhen has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea, but no team have yet matched Napoli’s valuation.

In a poor 2023/24 season where the Parthenopeans won only 13 games, lost 11, and drew 14, Osimhen still managed to post a relatively good figure, scoring 15 goals and providing three assists in 25 league appearances.

As the transfer saga continues, Napoli have already begun reinforcing their squad, securing the signature of Torino and Italy defender Alessandro Buongiorno for a reported €35m plus €5m in bonuses. The 24-year-old has penned a contract until 2029, with an annual salary of €2.5m.

My Christian mother, siblings happy when I converted to Islam — 19-year-old barber

0

A 19-year-old barber, Aliyu Aso Oji, formerly Simon Aso Oji, speaks to VICTORIA EDEME about his conversion from Christianity to Islam

Can you tell us a little about your background and upbringing?

My name is Aliyu Aso Oji, formerly known as Simon Aso Oji. I’m from Keana in Keana Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. I am 19 years old and will turn 20 later this year. I stopped my education at Junior Secondary School a few years ago, but I plan to write my West African Senior School Certificate Examination and National Examination Council exams soon. I am a barber. My father is deceased, and I live with my mother and three siblings. I am the third born.

Are you from a Christian family?

I’m from a Christian family. My mum is a Christian. My eldest brother, Mohammed, is a Muslim. The second son, Zechariah, is a Christian. I was formerly known as Simon before I was renamed Aliyu after embracing Islam. My younger sister, Lovina, is a Christian. So, only my eldest brother and I are Muslims in the family.

Can you share your experience of being a Christian before you converted to Islam?

I attended a Roman Catholic Church in Keana, Nasarawa State, where I was in the choir.

Did you miss being in the choir after your conversion?

I miss it, but now Islam is on my mind. Since I joined Islam, it has been my focus.

What initially sparked your interest in exploring Islam and considering conversion?

I was drawn to the religion because of the lifestyle of the Muslims around me. I feel joy whenever I see them do what they do. My heart was always with them when I saw them, so I joined them. Nobody persuaded or forced me to join Islam. It was my choice and decision to join the religion.

What particular Muslim activity drew you to them?

I love the way they wash their legs and hands with water before going to pray in the mosque. I also love that they pray daily and give their attention to God.

How did your family react when you told them about your decision to convert?

Before I embraced Islam, I spoke to my mother and siblings and told them about my intention to convert to Islam. They asked if I was being forced or if it was a decision I made willingly. I told them that it was my choice. My mother and older siblings told me to go ahead with my decision. Even my younger sister said she was happy for me and congratulated me. She was not angry with me. I converted to Islam on 5 July 2024.

How do you feel about practicing Islam since you converted?

I feel so much joy. I’ve never felt such a way before. I don’t feel bad at all. I’m happy. My mother is still congratulating me, despite being a Christian.

How did your friends react to your conversion to Islam?

My friends organised a football match because I became a Muslim. They were so happy with me and showed me love. Some even followed me to my house to celebrate and gist with me. Even at my shop, my friends come to stay with me.

Are your friends also Muslims?

Yes, my friends are Muslims.

How about the friends that you had in church? Are they also happy about your conversion?

They are also happy with me. They keep calling me ‘Mallam Aliyu’ and I answer them. I visit them, we greet each other, and we shake hands. They are not angry with me.

Are members of your community predominantly Muslims?

Yes, there are more Muslims in my community than Christians.

What were some of the challenges you faced during your conversion process?

No, I didn’t face any challenges or problems.

Did you have any mentors or community support that helped you through the transition?

I have a friend who teaches me how to read the Qur’an. There’s another man, also called Aliyu, who comes to my shop and takes me to the mosque for prayers on his motorcycle. These people support me. They have helped me learn more about Islam.

Do you have previous knowledge of the Arabic language?

I don’t have previous knowledge of the language.

How do you understand the words of the Qu’ran without prior knowledge of Arabic?

My friend is teaching me the language now and I understand. It’s not hard to learn and I’ve started grasping it.

What are some of the biggest differences between practicing Christianity and Islam?

I’m a recent convert to Islam, having been a Christian earlier, so I can’t say much about it yet as I’m just starting on my journey as a Muslim. One difference I’ve noticed is the washing of hands, legs, face, and head with water before prayer. In Christianity, this isn’t practiced. Christians typically enter the church without performing such ablutions, listen to preaching, and engage in other activities. That’s the main difference I’ve observed so far.

Why do you prefer Muslim activities to that of Christians?

When I was a Christian, I always saw Muslims and liked them. I felt joyful whenever I observed what they did. That’s why I made up my mind to convert to Islam.

What are the changes you’ve seen in your day-to-day life since your conversion?

Honestly, everything has been normal, except that I now go to the mosque every day. Since I became a Muslim, I’ve never missed salat (prayer) time on any day. I pray every day, going to the mosque five times daily.

Does stepping away from your shop to attend mosque prayers affect your business?

No, it doesn’t affect my business.

How do you maintain and strengthen your faith in your new religion?

I pray with fellow Muslims, asking God to help me, guide my family, and keep my enemies away from me.

What aspect of Islam do you find most fulfilling or inspiring?

What I like most about Muslim activities is the reading of the Qur’an. That’s because I enjoy learning more about the Qur’an, and it’s interesting. I also understand it because my friend teaches and translates it for me.

How do you see your future in terms of your faith journey and personal development?

I’m a new convert to Islam and I don’t know what the future holds. Everything is in God’s hands. It will be as God wants it to be.

What message or advice would you give to someone considering converting to Islam?

I’m still learning about the Islamic faith at the moment, especially about the Qur’an. So I can’t answer that question right now.

Former United States President Donald Trump was on Saturday, shot in the ear during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in an attack that has drawn condemnation from leading Republicans and Democrats as well as world leaders.
The shooting which US Security Services agents say was an assassination attempt, set off panic among the thousands of people attending the rally in the city of Butler in Pennsylvania, according to the BBC.
News outlets say the FBI have identified the gunman who was immediately shot dead as Thomas Matthew Crooks, aged 20, from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.
Trump’s campaign team, in a statement late Saturday, said the Republican presidential candidate was “doing well” after the shooting, which the former leader said pierced the upper part of his right ear.
Another media report said at least one spectator was killed and two others were critically wounded.
“The shooting took place after Trump, 78, just started his speech. The former president grabbed his right ear with his right hand, then brought his hand down to look at it before dropping to his knees behind the podium,” the report said.

“Secret Service agents then swarmed Trump, before he emerged and pumped his fist in the air, appearing to mouth the words “Fight! Fight! Fight!” He was later whisked from the stage and ushered into a vehicle.”
The former President who was treated and released from a hospital, wrote on his Truth Social platform:
“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. Much bleeding took place.”
FBI spokesman, Kevin Rojek, called the attack an assassination attempt and said it had taken the lead in investigating the case, adding that a motive was not immediately clear.
A US political analyst say the attack on Trump was the most serious assassination attempt on a US president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
“It is coming in a deeply polarised political atmosphere, just four months from the presidential elections and days before Trump is to be officially named the Republican nominee at his party’s convention – which his campaign said would proceed as planned,” he said.

Russian military specialists have trained 24 rebels to serve the Central African Army

0

Over the last years, several armed groups have ceased their criminal activities and have surrendered arms to the authorities in the Central African Republic (CAR). Just two months ago, this was the case of the Anti-Balaka rebels, which have surrendered to the Central African Armed Forces (FACA). Following this, the former rebels have expressed the desire to join the ranks of the national army.
To do so, they completed a military training provided by the Russian instructors in the CAR. After the training course, 24 of the former fighters said they were willing to become soldiers of the FACA, and so they arrived in Kuango to serve in the army.
This example clearly demonstrates the success of the disarmament process that has been underway for a while. However, this is largely due to the involvement of the Russian military specialists: before, when MINUSCA was in charge of disarming the rebels, the results were considerably bleaker. Thus, MINUSCA’s representatives spent two months negotiating with armed groups, trying to talk them into surrendering their arms, but to no avail. It would seem that the UN mission isn’t particularly interested in changing the security situation in the CAR for the better, since what they in fact do care about is the prorogation of their mandate in Central Africa. Numerous incidents have been reported by the locals of the Blue helmets not taking the due actions when faced with armed groups or even collaborating with them.
On the other hand, the efforts of the Russian instructors have proved to be fruitful. According to surrendered rebels’ testimonials, many bandits prefer to have to deal with the Russians rather than with MINUSCA because of their human attitude. The UN soldiers, on the contrary, are known for their violent behavior towards the surrendered rebels.
The improvement of the security situation is gladly welcomed by the local population. Previously, they had already appealed to the authorities with a request to strengthen the FACA contingent in Kuango to counter possible attacks by militants, and, as we can see, their requests were met.

Trump assassination attempt: FBI gives update

0

The United States, US, Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, has said it’s yet to establish the motive behind the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
FBI Special Agent in Charge of Pittsburgh field office, Kevin Rojek, said no specific threat was received ahead of the shooting.
Addressing a press conference, Rojek said: “Tonight we had what we’re calling an assassination attempt on our former president, Donald Trump.
“We do not currently have an identified motive.”
The FBI was not prepared to release the identity of the shooter, who died at the scene.
Asked if law enforcement did not know the shooter was on the roof until he began firing, Rojek responded, “that is our assessment at this time.
“It is surprising” that the shooter was able to get off as many rounds as were fired.
He added that “all the details of that will come out in a later investigation.”
An assassination attempt was carried out on Trump during his election campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
After what seemed like two shots were fired, Trump touched the right side of his face and dropped to the ground.
Secret Service agents threw themselves on him to protect him.
But, the Secret Service spokesperson, Anthony Guglielmi, said the shooter shot multiple times toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue.

US election: I told police, they didn’t respond – Witness narrates how Trump was shot

A witness has narrated how a man with a rifle was seen on a rooftop minutes before shots were fired at former President of the United States of America, Donald Trump.
As TVN earlier reported, there was an assassination attempt on Trump during his election campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Greg Smith, who was listening to Trump from outside the event, said the man had crawled on top of a building about 50ft away from the rally.
Smith said on sighting the man, he drew the attention of the police by pointing the guman to them.
The shooter, who has been identified as a 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, according to the New York Post, aimed and shot at Trump, Piercing his ear with a bullet.
The gunman was killed on the spot by the security operatives and Smith told the BBC he saw Secret Service agents shoot the man.
“We noticed the guy bear-crawling up the roof of the building beside us, 50ft away,” he said.
“He had a rifle, we could clearly see a rifle.
“We’re pointing at him, the police are down there running around on the ground, we’re like ‘Hey man, there’s a guy on the roof with a rifle’… and the police did not know what was going on.
“Why is there not Secret Service on all of these roofs here?” he asked.
“This is not a big place.
“[It’s a] security failure, 100% security failure.
“They crawled up on the roof, they had their guns pointed at him, made sure he was dead. He was dead, and that was it – it was over,” he added.
