Lagos shuts market over poor sanitation

Officials from the Lagos Waste Management Authority and the state Environmental Sanitation Corps have sealed the Oja Oba Market at Ile Epo area of the state over poor sanitary conditions.

The LAWMA Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made this known in a statement on X.com on Sunday.

Gbadegesin wrote, “Following complaints from concerned members of the public, particularly #Freestuv1, Oja Oba market at Ile Epo was sealed this morning by a combined #ZeroToleranceLagos Task Force consisting of #Lawma_gov Monitoring and Compliance Team and men and women of #LAGESCOfficial.

“This market has become notorious for very poor sanitary conditions and failure to comply with set waste management regulations.”

He added that the action was taken to protect members of the public from food-borne and water-borne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.

He also urged members of the public to raise the alarm anywhere they see poor sanitary practices in markets or other business outlets.

According reported in February that LAWMA officials similarly sealed Ire-Akari Market in the Isolo area of Lagos over poor sanitation.

Soldiers arrest terrorists, reunite lost child with family in Taraba

Troops of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested two notorious terrorists after a fierce shootout at Geshi Village in Damisa Ward of Donga Local Government Area, Taraba State.

The Acting Assistant Director of the 6 Brigade Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Oni Olubodunde, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Olubodunde stated that the operation, which took place on July 11, also led to the recovery of two motorcycles used by the criminals.

The statement partly read, “The operation, conducted by the troops deployed in Akate in Donga Local Government Area, occurred following intelligence reports that revealed an attack in Geshi Village by armed terrorists.

“Acting on this information, troops swiftly mobilised to the area and engaged the armed men in a fierce exchange of gun battle, ultimately overpowering the terrorists with superior fire power and subdued them forcing the criminals to flee in disarray into the bush with gun shot wounds.”

Two wounded terrorists were said to have been apprehended while trying to escape on motorcycles, which were also seized.

The statement added that the arrested suspects are undergoing interrogation.

In another development, troops of Headquarters 6 Brigade while on routine patrol within the Jalingo metropolis, were reported to have found a nine-year-old pupil identified as Dorothy Kwatsumen wandering around in her school uniform at Gongomaliki area in Yorro LGA of Taraba State.

The statement disclosed that initial attempts to locate her school and family were unsuccessful, hence, she was taken to the Brigade headquarters for custody to ensure her parents were located.

The statement added, “Eventually, she was later discovered to be  a pupil of Glory Children Academy.

“Troops proceeded to the school location and met the headteacher who informed troops that they had been searching for about 24 hours and have reported the case to the Jalingo Police Division. The pupil was later reunited with her parents.”

According Online reported earlier in July that the Nigerian Army disclosed that its troops recovered ammunition and neutralised 177 terrorists while making 263 arrests during different operations carried out across the country in the space of one week.

Organised Labour in Abia State, on Sunday, issued a stern warning to the state government, declaring an impending indefinite strike if their demands are not met by July 28, 2024.
The ultimatum comes after a series of negotiations that have failed to resolve key issues concerning workers’ welfare.
Earlier threats of strike action on June 8, 2024, were temporarily averted when Governor Alex Otti intervened, instructing the state Accountant-General to engage with labour leaders on their grievances. The main points of contention include the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage and the N35,000 palliative wage, which were federally approved since October 2023.
Ogbonnaya Okoro, Chairman of Abia State’s NLC, highlighted disparities in wage payments, noting that while the state claims it pays the minimum wage, actual figures show discrepancies with workers receiving significantly less. Governor Otti, however, insists that official records reflect compliance with the N30,000 minimum wage requirement.

In a press briefing held on Sunday, July 14, 2024, Okoro reiterated the union’s stance, emphasizing that the state government must honour the Memorandum of Understanding agreed upon during recent negotiations. This agreement encompasses not only wage issues but also the settlement of severance allowances for compulsorily retired Directors and Permanent Secretaries, as well as the prompt payment of leave allowances.
Echoing Okoro’s sentiments, Ihechi Eneogwe, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Abia State, expressed frustration over the prolonged discussions without concrete actions from the government. He emphasized the urgency for the state authorities to address these critical issues without further delay.
With the deadline looming, tensions are escalating between the state government and the labour unions, raising concerns about the potential disruptions an indefinite strike could cause across various sectors in Abia State. The fate of thousands of workers now hangs in the balance as both sides brace for a decisive period ahead.

The senator representing Delta Central, Ede Dafinone, has described the Delta State local government elections held on Saturday as “a complete sham and a mockery of democratic ideals and standards.”

Dafinone, while reacting to the outcome of the council poll said, “It is very unfortunate that people at the grassroots level are prevented from participating in our democratic process by state governors to freely elect their councillors and council chairmen.”

While applauding President Bola Tinubu for supporting financial autonomy for local governments across the country with the recent Supreme Court judgment, he noted that “Nigerians of goodwill must collectively work to amend the relevant sections of the constitution to rescue the local government system from the iron-fist of the state governors.”

Dafinone said, “The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta sensed that the electoral umpire, Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC), was not going to conduct credible elections as predicted, hence most of the party candidates withdrew from the polls.

“It’s very unfortunate and sad how low our people can go to acquire power. It’s even more troubling that after 25 years in our democratic experiment we can’t conduct what looks like an election at the local government level.

“What took place in Delta State on Saturday to all intents and purposes can’t be classified as an election. It’s a complete sham and an affront to all known democratic ideals.

“The state electoral umpire most probably acting on the instructions of the state Governor just allotted figures to candidates who took part in the shambolic process. It can at best be described as a mere coronation of all PDP-nominated candidates.

“As predicted by political watchers that the Delta State PDP-led government is incapable of conducting free, fair, and credible elections, DSIEC proved all of us right. Because there were reports across the state that electoral materials, particularly result sheets, were not supplied to many polling units, and in some cases, wards where they consider strongholds of the opposition, voting materials were not supplied at all.”

He further explained, “It’s disheartening that our governors, who are products of free and fair elections, can’t replicate the same in the local government areas of their state. If INEC were to conduct elections the way the governors purportedly teleguide SIEC to conduct local government polls, many of them would not be governors today.

“I think at this point in our national history and democratic journey, we have to put partisan politics aside and work collectively to amend the relevant sections of our constitution to rescue the local government system from the grips of our governors.

“I must commend the laudable effort of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for taking the lead in this respect by ensuring financial autonomy for the local governments across the country.

“We must do likewise to enthrone democratic principles at the local government level by ensuring that a credible agency, possibly INEC, is charged with the conduct of local government elections across the country in order to guarantee our people’s participation in democratic governance.”

The Organised Labour, Abia State chapter on Sunday warned the state government that failure to adhere to and implement the Memorandum of Understanding reached at the meeting by July 28, 2024, “no other notice will be given to the government than to proceed on an indefinite strike.”

The union has once threatened to go on strike on Monday, June 8, 2024, due to the state government’s inability to dialogue with the union over the payment of the N30,000 minimum wage and the N35,000 palliative wage award as approved by the Federal Government since October 2023.

Following the ultimatum, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti met with members of the organised labour in the state with a directive to the state Accountant-General to liaise with the union on their demands, among other issues.

The state’s NLC Chairman, Ogbonnaya Okoro, had alleged that the state government is currently paying N20,100 while workers in the Local Governments receive N18,000 as minimum wage.

However, the governor said that records available to him showed the state is paying N30,000 minimum wage.

Addressing the press on Sunday, July 14, 2024, Okoro warned the state government that failure to adhere to and implement the Memorandum of Understanding, reached at the meeting by July 28, 2024, “no other notice will be given to the government than to proceed on an indefinite strike.”

The details of the agreement he highlighted include the payment of the N30,000 minimum wage and the N35,000 palliative wage award as approved by the Federal Government, payment of severance allowances to Directors and Permanent Secretaries compulsorily retired, payment of current leave allowances, among others.

Also speaking, the state chairman, Trade Union Congress, Ihechi Eneogwe, disclosed that for over one week, organised labour has been discussing with the state government on these issues which the state government must address soonest.

The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has issued a compelling plea to President Bola Tinubu, urging swift action on policies aimed at alleviating the severe hardships caused by the removal of the oil subsidy and the floating of the naira.
In a detailed communique released after the CONUA National Executive Committee meeting held at the University of Benin from July 12 to 14, the association’s National President, Niyi Sunmonu, underscored the urgency of the situation. Sunmonu emphasized the need for immediate measures, including the announcement of a commensurate minimum wage, to mitigate the adverse effects of these economic policies on Nigerians.
Addressing the broader issues affecting university academics, Sunmonu criticized the government’s handling of salary payments amidst strikes by sister associations. He stated, “The NEC reviewed the state of the nation and noted the excruciating pains Nigerians have been going through as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy since May 29, 2023, and the subsequent policy of floating the naira.”
“The union further notes that President Bola Tinubu has assured the nation that a series of measures are being put in place to alleviate the suffering of the people. We urge the President to expedite action on those measures, particularly the announcement of a commensurate minimum wage and other measures that will cushion the effect of this untold hardship being currently experienced by the citizens.”
Highlighting specific grievances within the academic community, Sunmonu voiced concern over the withholding of salaries and the unfair treatment of CONUA members due to strikes by other unions. “The continued withholding of the three and a half months salary of members of CONUA due to the strike action embarked upon by a sister academic staff union in the Universities is rather unfair,” he emphasized.

He further criticized the lumping together of striking and non-striking members, stating, “CONUA, as a union, has consistently maintained that it never declared and was not part of the strike action.”
Sunmonu also brought attention to longstanding issues such as promotion arrears spanning seven years and unpaid Earned Academic Allowance for multiple sessions. “The NEC is demanding, unequivocally, that the agencies of government involved be directed immediately to release these third-party remittances, without further delay.”
Calling for broader reforms, Sunmonu urged the inclusion of CONUA in all TETFUND programs and committee compositions involving academic unions, labeling the current exclusion as discriminatory. He also criticized the stagnation of academic remuneration since 2009, despite rising living costs.
The union’s concerns extended beyond academic issues to broader economic policies affecting universities. CONUA condemned the recent hike in electricity tariffs and advocated for special status for universities in tariff adjustments, highlighting their non-income-generating status.
Furthermore, CONUA strongly opposed the Federal Government’s proposal to privatize universities, warning of dire consequences for educational institutions if implemented.
In concluding the communique, Sunmonu reiterated the urgent need for President Tinubu’s intervention, emphasizing that prompt policy reforms are essential to mitigate the hardships faced by Nigerians and ensure the stability of academic institutions across the country.

New 60 megavolt-amperes transformer will add 40mw to national grid – TCN

Transmission Company of Nigeria has commissioned a 60 megavolt-amperes power transformer in its Katsina facility.
TCN disclosed this in a statement through its official X handle on Sunday.
The company said the transformer will add 48 megawatts to the national grid.
“The Katsina Sub-Region of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) commissioned a 60MVA power transformer on Friday, July 12, 2024, in its 132/33kV Kankia Transmission Substation.
“As a result, Kankia Substation now has more available bulk electricity for Kano DisCo to offtake and distribute to its customers in Kankia and environs.
“The commissioned transformer added 48MW to the national grid.
“This commissioning further attests to TCN’s commitment towards further increasing its capability to wheel more bulk electricity to distribution load centres nationwide”, TCN stated.
The company said in the week of July 4, 2024, Nigeria’s electricity generation stood at a 4,723.30mw peak, a decline from 4,800mw recorded on May 3.
The development comes amid at least five National grid collapses in 2024 alone leading to outages.
