NNPP chieftain calls for more security, protection around Trump

A chieftain of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has called for more security and protection around former President of United States of America (USA) Donald Trump.
Oguntoyinbo condemned the attack of the former President.
The NNPP chieftain made these declarations while responding to the Saturday’s attack of the former president.
In a statement made available to TVN Monday, Oguntoyinbo noted that more security should be beefed around Trump and his campaign team.
He maintained that America should watch its citizens and discourage political violence.
He also urged African countries to monitor the situation and advise their embassies accordingly.

Trump stars at Republican convention clouded by shooting

Donald Trump returns to the campaign trail Monday as the star of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee — a gathering meant to fire up the grassroots that has instead been overshadowed by the weekend attempt on his life.

The 78-year-old former president is carrying Republican hopes into November’s election and, days after an assassin’s bullets flew by him, is set to be anointed as the party’s champion to face his Democratic successor, Joe Biden.

Some 50,000 Republicans are descending on the shores of Lake Michigan for the four-day celebration of all things Trump, culminating in his acceptance speech on Thursday.

Before that — perhaps as soon as Monday Trump will unveil his vice-presidential pick, a high-stakes moment that could set the tone for the final stretch of his campaign.

Yet the Trump shooting is really the only story in town.

Much of the buzz around the made-for-TV convention moments has been eclipsed by the fallout from Saturday’s assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, in which Trump was wounded and one attendee was killed.

There was talk of a postponement of the convention, but Trump has insisted that the show must go on, vowing to be “defiant in the face of wickedness.”

“I’m not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be dead,” Trump told the New York Post in an interview aboard his plane en route to Milwaukee. “By luck or by God… I’m still here,” he added.

Riding high in the polls despite a cascade of indictments, and his first conviction, the tycoon appears on course for victory as Biden, 81, faces calls from his own side to quit the race over concerns around his mental capabilities.

Takeover

With the shock of Saturday’s violence fresh in delegates’ minds, all eyes will be on Trump’s acceptance speech, with some US media outlets reporting that his brush with death had persuaded him to soften the edges.

Trump told the NYP that he had “prepared an extremely tough speech” about Biden’s “horrible administration. But I threw it away” for one he hopes will “unite our country.”

But having survived a horrific attack that many Republicans have sought to blame on “over-the-top” anti-Trump rhetoric, the ex-president will have to rein in the instinct to settle scores.

The attempt on his life has revived fears over political violence but most of the important party business at conventions takes place behind a security ring of steel anyway, and Milwaukee is no different.

“We’re fully prepared and have a comprehensive security plan in place, and we’re ready to go,” said Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the Secret Service’s RNC coordinator.

Much of the convention is designed in Trump’s image, with themes riffing on his “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan.

His iron grip reflects a broader takeover — often hostile of the party itself.

A diminished figure after his 2020 election loss which saw his supporters storm the Capitol, the former real estate mogul has spent much of the last four years clambering back to the apex of Republican politics, cajoling critics into line or hounding them out.

Installing handpicked loyalists including his daughter-in-law Lara Trump atop the Republican National Committee, the billionaire has worked to crush dissent.

Landslide?

The Milwaukee convention is very much a family affair, with Lara and the former president’s two eldest sons, Don Jr and Eric, due to take the podium.

Former first lady Melania Trump is also set to make a rare appearance but is not scheduled to speak.

Many other high-profile Republicans are slated to address the delegates, including several of the frontrunners in the contest to be Trump’s running mate.

The ex-president appears to have zeroed in on two US senators — J.D. Vance of Ohio and Marco Rubio of Florida — as well as North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, who initially ran against Trump for the nomination before falling in line.

All have speaking roles, although Vance seems to have the momentum, and is a marginal favourite among Washington watchers.

If Trump’s 2016 campaign was greeted with suspicion among establishment Republicans, the 2024 iteration looks more like a ticker tape parade for a battle-scarred gladiator returning one last time to the arena.

“Donald Trump is on track, I think, to win this election,” Democratic Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado acknowledged on CNN on Wednesday.

“And maybe win it by a landslide and take with him the Senate and the House.”

The Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province has launched a security outfit to help in fighting insecurity within the church premises.
During the official unveiling of the outfit, which took place at the Obiri Odenigbo Pavilion at Maria Assumpta Owerri, the Catholic Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, said that the establishment of the security outfit was a response to the security situation in the state and the country.
He stated that it became necessary to support the government by complementing the efforts of security agencies in fighting insecurity.
He congratulated the newly trained cadets for their perseverance, commitment, and unwavering spirit, and charged them to always remember the values they were taught in the discharge of their duties.
He noted that their duty is not just securing a job, but a vocation to serve and protect with honor and compassion.
Archbishop Ugorji also commended Governor Uzodimma for his passion for the security of lives and properties in the state, and appealed to the state government to support the security outfit, especially in the areas of mobility, communication gadgets, and other logistics.
In his address, State Governor Hope Uzodinma, represented by the Secretary of the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, commended the Archbishop for establishing the security agency, stating that no meaningful development can take place in an insecure environment.
He recalled that one of the first major public procurements his administration made upon assuming office was the procurement of 100 patrol vehicles equipped with communication gadgets for security agencies to tackle insecurity and crimes in the state.
The governor also emphasised that his administration has never relented in its efforts to support and collaborate with security agencies in the state to ensure the safety of all.
He expressed joy and appreciation for the Archbishop and the entire faithful for not only praying for the government but also supporting the administration by establishing the Security Outfit to complement the efforts of the police and its sister agencies.
Uzodinma used the forum to urge other dioceses and religious bodies to emulate the Archbishop, emphasizing that security is everyone’s responsibility, not just the government’s alone.
“If all of us make time and invest resources in securing our families, we will collectively secure the state,” he said.
The Governor called on community leaders to provide useful information to security agencies regarding the activities of criminal elements in their respective domains.
He also charged the newly decorated cadets to be bold and of good behavior, assuring them of government support to encourage and sustain the outfit.
Contributing, the Chairman of the Occasion, Chief Jerry Chukwueke, who also applauded the Governor’s efforts to curb insecurity in the state, equally commended the Archbishop for establishing the security outfit to safeguard parishes, chaplaincies, special jurisdictions, and communities.
He advised the cadets to be good ambassadors of the Archdiocese, noting that the outfit has created additional job opportunities for youths.
Chief Chukwueke promised to provide technical assistance from time to time and also made a financial donation to encourage the Archdiocesan security outfit.
Also speaking, the Director of Owerri Archdiocesan Security Services, Rev. Fr. Brig Gen Charles Iroegbu, said that Owerri Archdiocesan Security Services is the first incorporated faith-based security outfit in the country. He commended the Archdiocese for the initiative.
The passing-out parade ceremony was witnessed by some top government officials, clergy, religious faithful and other dignitaries.

Russia rejects anti-Putin convict’s plea for hospital transfer

Russia on Monday denied a plea from a Siberian shaman for transfer out of a severe psychiatric hospital, over three years after being confined for protesting against President Vladimir Putin, his lawyer said.

Alexander Gabyshev, 55, was sent to a psychiatric hospital in January 2021 after repeatedly attempting to walk from his native Yakutia in Russia’s far east to Moscow in a bid to “exorcise” Putin from office.

A Siberian court refused to soften his treatment and transfer him to a general psychiatric hospital in May, a decision Primorsky Regional Court upheld on Monday, his lawyer Alexei Pryanishnikov said.

“We will appeal up to the Supreme Court. In the meantime, a commission of psychiatrists will hold another examination of Alexander Gabyshev in early October,” Pryanishnikov said.

Rights groups have criticised Russia for using psychiatry and forced confinement in mental institutions as a punitive tool against dissent, a practice that was systemic in the Soviet Union.

Gabyshev’s involuntary confinement in psychiatric hospitals may amount to a form of torture, Amnesty International has said, while the Russian rights group Memorial has recognised him as a political prisoner.

FG to begin Immigration, Fire Service recruitment August

The Federal Government has said the next stage of the recruitment exercise for the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Federal Fire Service would begin in August.

The Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, Ja’afaru Ahmed, made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Ahmed added that the Board would conclude the recruitment exercise before the end of September.

He said: “The Board will begin the next stage of the recruitment exercise in August and will conclude the exercise before the end of September.”

Ahmed, however, apologised for the Board’s inability to complete the exercise by June 15 as earlier intended.

He added, “It was due to a nationwide manpower audit carried out in the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Federal Fire Service (FFS) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which was just recently ended.

“All shortlisted candidates will be duly notified of the next stage through their phone numbers and email addresses.”

Kenya police nab serial killer suspect over nine mutilated bodies

Kenyan police said Monday they had arrested a “serial killer” suspect after the gruesome discovery of nine mutilated bodies in a Nairobi rubbish dump.

“We have this morning arrested a prime suspect,” the head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin told reporters.

“We are dealing with a serial killer, a psychopathic serial killer who has no respect for human life.”

“We have a second suspect who was caught with one of the handsets from one of the victims,” said Amin.

Acting Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said the 33-year-old prime suspect had been arrested around 3:00 am local (0000 GMT) near a bar in a joint operation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the National police service.

He said a total of nine bodies had now been recovered so far and that autopsies on the victims would be carried out on Monday.

Since Friday mutilated and dismembered bodies — trussed in plastic bags — have been pulled from the rubbish heap in Mukuru slum area in the south of the capital, horrifying the country.

Police had said on Sunday the eight that had been recovered were all women.

Tensions ran high at the crime scene over the weekend, as furious residents were dispersed by police firing tear gas.

The discoveries have also thrown another spotlight on Kenyan police and added more pressure on President William Ruto, who is struggling to contain a crisis over widespread anti-government protests that saw dozens of demonstrators killed.

Female journalist, Hafsat seeks N5m for brain tumour surgery

female journalist, Hafsat Abdulhamid Adebayo, is currently fighting for her life at the Intensive Care Unit, ICU, of the Jos University Teaching Hospital, JUTH, where she has been admitted for months.
Hafsat is seeking the sum of N5 million for a repeat brain tumour surgery to save her life.
Aishat Abdulhamid, Hafsat’s elder sister, who has abandoned her business to care for the journalist, told newsmen that she has been sick for at least four years.
Aishat who now wheels her sister around told journalists that she has already undergone some surgeries that have gulped millions of naira but relapsed and now needs more surgeries.
She noted that Hafsat had been admitted at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, ATBUTH, but her condition has continued to deteriorate.
“She has really suffered a lot. We have spent all our savings. Friends, family and colleagues have really tried to support us as well, Aishat said.
“She had surgery last year with the intervention of the Bauchi State Government where the tumour was evacuated and was recovering at home but she relapsed.
“We are currently at the JUTH. We were told that she had to undergo another emergency surgery. As we speak, for more than a week, she cannot eat, talk and walk. The consultant told us that she must have the operation this week.
“We appeal to Nigerians to assist us, may God bless you.

Thomas Mueller retires from Germany team after Euro 2024

Germany striker Thomas Mueller said Monday he was retiring from international football after a disappointing Euro 2024 in which the host nation were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

“After 131 national team games and 45 goals, I am saying goodbye,” Mueller said in a video statement announcing his decision.

Mueller, who turns 35 in September, was a key member of the German team that won the 2014 World Cup.

The charismatic forward also scored the opening goal in Germany’s unforgettable 7-1 win over the hosts Brazil in the semi final.

“When I played my first international match for the German national team over 14 years ago, I could never have dreamed of all this,” Mueller said in the video.

“It always made me very proud to play for my country. We celebrated together and sometimes shed a tear together,” he said.

A tearful Mueller had hinted at retirement following Germany’s exit from Euro 2024.

The tournament hosts lost 2-1 in the quarter-final to Spain, who went on to lift the trophy on Sunday against England.

After the Spain game, Mueller said he would hold talks with national team coach Julian Nagelsmann and decide whether it was the “sensible option” to step aside in favour of younger players.

Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is the only member of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning side still involved in the national team set up.

Germany and Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos announced before Euro 2024 that he would retire from football after the tournament.

Unlike Kroos, Mueller will continue to play for his club Bayern Munich, where he is under contract until 2025.

Only Lothar Matthaeus and Miroslav Klose have played more games for Germany than Mueller, who is also Germany’s sixth highest goalscorer of all time.
