The opposition coalition might be unintentionally supporting President Bola Tinubu’s political approach by forming alliances too quickly without clear agreements and procedures, according to Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).
In a 2014 merger that became the All Progressives Congress (APC), Baba-Ahmed linked the current coalition’s actions, particularly its acceptance of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the general elections in 2027, to that of the APC.
He explained that while he has had conversations with coalition leaders, he has remained in the Labour Party and continued to closely monitor developments. He said he is taking a “cautious and strategic” approach and is keeping an eye on the coalition’s “body language” before taking any action.
The opposition is correct in everything it does, let me simply state that. I completely agree that we should come together. Every one of its guiding concepts and goals is accurate. It’s also someone else’s game, though. Tinubu is the one playing this game.

Given its substantial influence in the 2023 elections, Datti cautioned against ignoring the Labour Party.
The Labour Party is entitled to more than to be ignored. Regardless of all the reservations, we are aware of the roles that each side is playing. This party received more than 10 million votes, according to our own count. This is a party that, regardless of what the judges say, defeated the APC and PDP together.
The coalition’s credibility and preparedness for governing would be put to the real test by the caliber of primary elections, he added, underscoring the need of internal democracy inside the alliance.
He asserted that “having successful primaries is the first step towards good governance.”
