One killed, another injured in Lagos auto crash

A yet-to-be-identified male adult has been confirmed dead in an accident involving a container truck and a commercial Suzuki mini vehicle on the CMS bridge in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 6:15 am on Monday when the mini-vehicle was descending towards the Apogbon bridge in the community.

The spokesperson for LASTMA, Taofiq Adebayo, in a statement obtained by According to Metro on Tuesday, said the truck driver had temporarily halted the vehicle to address a mechanical malfunction when the Suzuki mini vehicle, reportedly travelling at an excessive speed, fatally struck him.

“The impact resulted in his immediate death. A female passenger in the Suzuki sustained severe eye injuries and was urgently transported to the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for emergency medical treatment.

“LASTMA personnel quickly responded to the scene, coordinating efforts with officers from the Ebute-Ero Police Division, LASMABUS, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Response Unit,” he stated.

Adebayo noted that the police promptly secured the scene, facilitated the removal of the deceased’s remains, and supported LASTMA officers to ensure the seamless flow of traffic in the aftermath of the incident.

According to him, the authority expressed its deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and strongly urged motorists to exercise heightened vigilance and adhere to traffic regulations, especially in densely congested areas.

In a related development, another single-vehicle accident involving a Chevrolet Sports Utility Vehicle was said to have occurred on the Lekki-Ajah Expressway area of the state.

The SUV reportedly veered off the road near Salem and plunged into a drainage ditch, with preliminary reports attributing the crash to suspected brake failure exacerbated by reckless speeding.

No casualty or injury was however recorded in this incident.

The accidents occurred barely 24 hours after one person died and eight others got injured in an accident that happened on the Third Mainland Bridge.
