Gbegele Mustapha has been detained by the Ondo State Police Command for his alleged involvement in the death of Adijat Olaoye.

In the Fanibi Area of Akure, the state’s capital, the suspect allegedly made an attempt to rape the deceased in her room.

The 58-year-old woman reportedly fell while trying to free herself and later passed away.

The suspect was a Togolese labourer in the area, according to state commissioner of police Taiwo Jesubiyi, who spoke about the arrest on Tuesday at the state police headquarters in Akure.

Jesubiyi later added that the suspect’s behaviour was caused by the Indian hemp he had been smoking.

The head of the police department stated, “On May 17, 2023, a case of attempted rape against one Gbegele Mustapha, age 29, a labourer from Togo, was reported at the Fanibi Division. He entered Mrs. Adijat Olaoye’s room, a 58-year-old woman, with the intent to rape her. She fought the woman and hit her head on the ground.

“Neighbours who heard the noise rushed into her room and saw her bleeding; she was taken to the hospital while the suspect was arrested. 21-year-old rapists receive life sentences in Ekiti. Later, the woman passed away in a hospital.

The suspect claimed, while being questioned, that the Indian hemp he had that day had made him feel “high.”

The police chief also discussed how members of the command detained some suspected cultists in Owo, the state’s capital and the centre of the Owo Local Government Area.

The command organised raids of the affected areas, led by Area Commander Owo, in response to the terrible activities of cultists in Owo and its surroundings. The teams, which included all tactical teams, found the suspects’ hiding places and busted them, according to the commissioner.

Fadaunsi Monday, 27, Oluwafemi Ajayi, 34, Adewale Monday, 22, Olopona Olamide, 27, Ifedayo Michael, 20, Isiaka Jimoh, 30, and Olatunji Ojo, 35 are among the suspects.

The commissioner promised that as soon as the investigation was over, all of the suspects would face charges in court.
