Ondo SWAN, NDLEA team up to tackle drug abuse in sports

The Ondo State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria has partnered with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to combat drug abuse among sportsmen and women, as well as other stakeholders.

The partnership was highlighted during a sensitisation program held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure on Sunday.

Speaking at the event, NDLEA Commander in Ondo State, Mr. Kayode Raji, stressed the urgent need to tackle the escalating issue of drug abuse within the sports community.

He emphasised that drug abuse, which has devastated many lives in the country, has infiltrated the sports world, necessitating immediate action by stakeholders.

Raji reaffirmed the NDLEA’s commitment to eradicating drug abuse and supporting those affected.

Raji stated, “We are not here to deliver speeches; we are here to save lives.

“Drug abuse has destroyed many lives, and it is no longer a distant issue but one that is now prevalent among us. The consequences are limitless. Drug abuse is gradually infiltrating the sports community, and now is the time to step in and sensitize athletes about its dangers.”

He also stressed that preventive measures and support systems are in place to ensure athletes have the resources and knowledge to avoid drug abuse.

The sensitisation program, themed “Drug Abuse – Battling a Menace in Nigerian Sports,” was organised by SWAN.

While declaring the program open, the Ondo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, commended the organisers for their timely initiative, especially as the world prepares for the 2024 Olympics.

Represented by his Special Adviser, Mr. Daodu Alex, the Commissioner expressed the state government’s readiness to partner with stakeholders and agencies to create a drug-abuse-free society.

He said, “I admonish the convener of this event and their partner to ensure they take this advocacy beyond this hall,” Yusuf-Ogunleye stated. “Let us take it to schools so that we can educate upcoming athletes on the dangers of taking performance-enhancing tablets.”

In his remarks, the state Chairman of SWAN, Mr. Segun Giwa, highlighted the significant threat drug abuse poses to the sports industry.

He urged sports writers to play an active role in raising awareness and educating athletes.

Giwa called for stronger government support and the creation of a drug-free sports culture that values hard work, dedication, and fair play.

“Let us all work together to create a drug-free sports culture in Nigeria,” Giwa said.

A culture that values hard work, dedication, and fair play. A culture that produces champions who inspire us with their talent, their character, and their integrity.”
