Primary school teachers are to resume their halted strike on Monday, January 15, 2024, until further notice, according to a directive from the Nigeria Union of Teachers’ Federal Capital Territory Wing.

Following an emergency meeting of the State Wing Standing Committee, a communiqué dated January 12, 2024, provided this information.

Co-signing the communiqué were Ibukun Adekeye, the publicity secretary, Mrs. Margaret Jethro, the head of the NUT in the Federal Capital Territory, and Abdullahi Shafas.

In addition, if primary school teachers’ demands are not satisfied by January 19, 2024, the SWSC is urging secondary school teachers to join the strike on January 22.

On September 11, 2023, the union went on an indefinite strike in protest of many arrears, including the reimbursement of a minimum age of 25 months and the adoption of a 40% unique allowance.

After the minister and area council chairmen failed to address their demands, the NUT said that “nothing positive has taken place” during the six-week strike suspension that ended on November 7, 2023, and that the SWSC was forced to order the strike to resume.

Part of the communiqué said, “We are concerned that several meetings have been held, but the primary school teachers continue to suffer from the high cost of living that is caused by the removal of fuel subsidies and have no support from anywhere.”

“With the suffering of the teachers and the area council chairmen’s unwillingness to provide the teachers with these rights, along with the minister’s delayed intervention, the State Wing Standing Committee in Session is left with no choice but to order all primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory to resume the suspended strike in order to further emphasise her demands.” Monday, January 15, 2024, is when the strike will start.

“An injury to one is an injury to all,” the SWSC-on-Session equally decided, “with effect from Monday, January 22, 2024, all secondary school teachers in FCT will join in solidarity if the outstanding demands of the primary school teachers are not paid before Friday, January 19, 2024.”

Thus, starting on Monday, the union asked parents to keep their primary school-age children at home.
