The federal government has been urged to free Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), by John Azuta-Mbata, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
Kanu should be released so that he can receive the proper medical care, Azuta Mbata underlined.
In a short video message distributed to reporters on Thursday, he made this plea.
In 2015, Kanu was initially taken into custody on suspicion of treason.
He fled the country in 2017 after failing to post bail, and Nigerian security forces conducted a contentious operation that resulted in his apprehension again in Kenya in June 2021.
Since then, the Department of State Services, or DSS, has been in charge of him.
Kanu’s arrest has no benefit to the nation, according to Azuta Mbata, who encouraged the federal government to look into a political solution.
According to him, “The government has no real advantage in keeping him around.” In addition to ensuring his safety and well-being, the government must permit him to travel and receive medical care as soon as feasible.
“This crisis requires a political response from the administration. I don’t think the government has a compelling reason to hold him any longer.
