Obi’s ADC Alliance Gets Backing from Enugu LP Despite Abure’s Stand

The opposition alliance led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has received official backing from the Labour Party (LP) chapter in Enugu.

Internal LP tensions have been heightened by threats from a section led by Julius Abure to impose sanctions on Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, for his involvement in the new opposition coalition.

Kingsley Ugwu, the acting state chairman of the LP, wrote a letter on July 3, 2025, stating that the party is supporting the coalition in order to create a better Nigeria.

“We are happy to announce that the Labour Party Enugu State has formally joined the coalition to work with our principal, Peter Obi, to contribute to the movement for a better Nigeria,” the letter said.

“The party’s desire for unity and collaboration in the interest of national development is the foundation of the decision to align with the coalition,” Ugwu said.

We’re thrilled to report that we can now start promoting the ADC agenda in all 160 wards of Enugu State as part of this endeavor,” he continued.

The alliance, he added, aims to encourage community involvement on matters that are important to Nigerians and to advance a common vision for a better country.

Ugwu declared, “We think that by cooperating, we can create a better future for our state and our country.”

Obi and a number of other well-known Nigerian politicians were seen at the Abuja event on Wednesday where the ADC was unveiled as the opposition coalition’s platform.

Former All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman John Oyegun, former vice president Atiku Abubakar, former interior minister Rauf Aregbesola, former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal, and former senate president David Mark—who is currently the ADC’s interim national chairman—were among those in attendance.
