No weapon seizure by DSS — Plateau govt refutes sabotage allegation

Reports claiming that the Department of State Services (DSS) purposefully hampered efforts to respond to recent gunman attacks on villages have been denied by the Plateau State Government.

Samuel Jatau, the Secretary to the State Government, called the accusations “misleading, erroneous, and aimed at causing disaffection and acrimony” between the state and the DSS in a statement released on Tuesday.

The statement posted on the Plateau State Government’s Facebook page denied social media rumors that the DSS confiscated guns intended for the Plateau Neighbourhood Watch organization, Operation Rainbow, in order to thwart its ability to respond to the violence.
“Reports monitored on Facebook and other social media handles have a misleading story that the Department of State Services seized weapons procured for the Plateau state neighborhood watch agency – Operation Rainbow,” Jatau stated.

The report also implied that the seizure was purposefully carried out to delay the agency’s reaction to the recent violent attacks on certain populations in the state. We want to be very clear that this is not at all the case.

The Department of State Services has never, even inadvertently, halted or taken any action to undermine government initiatives to combat insecurity in Plateau State.

He explained that the DSS had been especially useful in attempting to save lives and bring peace back to the Plateau.

On the contrary, the Department has been a very trustworthy partner and has supported the state in reducing insecurity in a number of ways.

As a result, the public is encouraged to disregard those reports because they are inaccurate, deceptive, and intended to sow discord and disenchantment between the state government and the Department of State Services.
