NNPC foundation sensitises students to tree planting

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Foundation sensitised students of Badagry Senior Secondary School on tree planting to mark World Environment Day.

During the event, the Manager of Programme Development at the foundation, Mrs Henrietta Obioma-Igwe, emphasised the importance of tree planting and conservation efforts in maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment.

She highlighted the theme of the 2024 edition, ‘Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,’ celebrated globally every June 5.

Obioma-Igwe said, “Tree planting minimises and prevents environmental challenges and supports ecosystem survival. Trees provide shade, cool the air through transpiration, regulate local climates, produce oxygen crucial for human and animal life, and absorb carbon dioxide to mitigate climate change.”

She explained that Badagry was chosen due to its status as a border community, serving as a significant point of entry into the country. The foundation planted 70 trees at Badagry Senior Secondary School as part of its ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability.

The school’s Principal, Mr Kenneth Adeoni, expressed gratitude for the NNPC Foundation’s initiative in educating students about environmental stewardship.

He stressed the importance of protecting the environment for future generations, underscoring the role of tree planting in climate mitigation.

Adeoni urged Nigerians to consistently plant and nurture trees, highlighting the educational impact of the sensitisation program on students’ understanding of environmental issues.

Assistant Chief Education Officer of Education District 5, Miss Martin Tunde, echoed the urgency of addressing climate change through tree planting.

She encouraged teachers and students to sustain and nurture the trees planted by the NNPC Foundation to ensure their growth and long-term impact.

Olanrewaju Olawoyin, a student in SS3, shared that the sensitisation program taught him about the significant benefits of tree planting for mankind’s well-being.
