A Nigerian-American, Nnamdi Chukwuocha, has been elected to the Delaware House of Representatives in the United States.

The Democrat emerged victorious to represent District 1 of Delaware in the ongoing US general elections.

Chukwuocha was first elected to the Delaware state legislature in 2018 after defeating incumbent Charles Potter Jr. at the Democratic Party primary.

He is the current poet laureate of Delaware along with his twin brother Al Mills.

Tweeting about him, the chairman and chief executive of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Abike Dabiri-Erewa said Chukwuocha had a DNA test to confirm his origin.

“Yes, Nnamdi won a seat into Delaware state legislature. However, he is African American. (He has a twin brother) He married a lovely Nigerian (Igbo) lady, believes he is Nigerian based on his DNA, and changed his name to a fully Nigerian name. So, yes we can claim him,” she wrote on Thursday.

Chukwuocha is the third American of Nigerian ancestry to win at the polls in the United States after  Adeoye Owolewa and Esther Agbaje.
