Banditry: Zamfara NMA calls on the government to convene a stakeholder meeting

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Zamfara State has urged the state government to convene a stakeholders’ security conference to enable residents to contribute to the fight against banditry and other kinds of crime in the state.

The request came after the state government failed to meet a two-week deadline set by the organization to provide protection in and around health facilities across the state to protect health professionals from being attacked or kidnapped.

The state NMA stated that the ongoing battle on insecurity is everyone’s business, and that the state government should convene a stakeholders’ security conference to brainstorm and develop a realistic and long-term solution to the problem.

Dr. Mannir Bature, the NMA Chairman, stated yesterday in Gusau, the state capital, that the harmful impact of banditry is impacting the people’s socio-economic and political lives.

He stated that the state’s health facilities are vital and must be protected.

The NMA boss stated that leaving the facilities unguarded poses a serious risk to not only health personnel but also patients.

A few weeks ago, bandits broke into the Dansadau General Hospital in the state’s Maru Local Government Area and kidnapped a health attendant and caregiver.

The event caused the state NMA to call the state government’s attention to the necessity to provide proper protection to the state’s health facilities.
