The 2024 N613.2 billion state budget has been ratified by Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago.

Bago issued a warning to his government’s officials not to create and spend state funds or else they would incur his wrath.

A few hours after the state legislature approved the budget on Wednesday, the governor signed it. He emphasised that the budget is comprehensive and gave citizens the assurance that it will be carried out as intended.

Speaking after approving the appropriations measure, Bago said that the speed at which the bill passed was extraordinary and praised the work of the lawmakers.

In order to provide them with appropriate quarters, Bago reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing the current synergy with the legislative arm and said that he has ordered the completion of the legislative quarters at the Three Arm Zone within the next three months.

He promised to terminate all MDA heads who do not appear before the Legislature for inspection and status inquiries, but he also reassured the populace that the Legislature’s oversight tool would not be jeopardised.

The sanctity of the legislature must be upheld. Someone needs to examine and critique the government’s operations in order for it to function effectively. In the spirit of accountability, we ought to have our books open,” he declared.

The state House of Assembly’s Speaker, Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, stated in his speech that the budget was expanded by N720 million in order to cover some essential areas required for the fulfilment of the “New Niger” agenda.

He said that the Legislature’s swift passage of the budget was made possible by the Planning Commission’s ability to guide it along.

Sarkin-David promised that the legislature would unwaveringly back him and that the 10th Assembly agrees with his vision and will do everything in its power to see it through to completion.

The state assembly received Bago’s 2024 estimate, dubbed the “Budget of the Future,” on December 19, 2023, with a guarantee from the Speaker that the lawmakers would see to it that the estimate was passed by December 27, 2023, at the latest.
