NDLEA arrest of one Muffat Ekong, a former military officer

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of one Muffat Ekong, a former military officer, for alleged cannabis possession.

According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, Ekong was detained with Frank Iredia Obamwonyi “on Wednesday, August 11th, with 286.3 kilograms of cannabis at Ogwashi Uku, Delta state on their way to Enugu state on their way to Enugu state.”

In a similar incident, Babafemi claimed that on August 13, the agency’s Benue state command detained one Eze Victor Ezenwanne, an alleged interstate trafficker, with 65.436 kg of diazepam tablets at Apir-Aliade road in Makurdi.

Adeyemi Segun Olamide was detained the same day in Maiduguri, Borno state, with 650 grams of skunk, according to the report.

Nnadi Nora Chinyere, who was allegedly in possession of 100 wraps of heroin and two parcels of the same material, was detained at the Murtala Mohammed international airport in Ikeja, Lagos, according to the NDLEA.

“On August 3, 2021, Nnadi was apprehended during the outward clearing of passengers on a Qatar Airways flight to Florentine, Italy. Babafemi stated the pills seized on her were hidden in five containers of hair relaxer cream.

“In a similar vein, on Thursday, August 12th, 2021, officers from the Agency’s MMIA Command seized a cargo of illicit substances intended for the United Kingdom at the airport’s NAHCO export shed.

“Further examination revealed that the shipment contains 66.600 kilos of cannabis sativa, 1.600 kilograms of heroin, and 1.450 kilograms of cocaine, totaling 69.65 kilograms, all concealed inside cosmetics.”

On August 5, narcotic officers on routine patrol at the NAHCO export facility confiscated another consignment of 25.8 kilograms of cocaine and cannabis concealed inside groceries bound for London, UK.

On August 7, two individuals in a bus from Lagos to Kogi state were also apprehended.

“Six parcels of skunk weighing 3.6kg, 30 pinches of Crack Cocaine weighing 87grams, and six sachets of Arizona weighing 265grams were recovered from the vehicle,” according to the statement.

Buba Marwa, the chairman of the Nigerian Democratic Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), praised the officers for their arrests and “charged them and other commands to maintain the current momentum, assuring them that President Muhammadu Buhari recognizes their efforts and will continue to motivate them to do more.”
