Navy conducts retraining to reduce collateral damage

The Central Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy has started a retraining exercise on marksmanship and weapons handling for its personnel to reduce collateral damage in their civil engagement duties.

The exercise Second Quarter CNC 2024 Range Classification and Small Arms Firing Exercise was held on Monday, at the Elele 5 Battalion Barracks of the Nigerian Army.

It is aimed at ensuring that naval personnel act with professionalism in civil engagements, among other objectives.

The Flag Officer Commanding Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Samson Bura, led officers and ratings in the exercise, stating that continuous qualitative training of its manpower would effectively safeguard the country’s territorial integrity and resources.

Bura, who was represented by the Fleet Commander, Headquarters Central Fleet, Rear Admiral Nnamdi Ekwom, said the exercise was a testament to their commitment to excellence, precision, and the unwavering dedication of their personnel.

He said, “As we commence this important exercise, I emphasise the paramount importance of safety. The handling of firearms and live ammunition requires the utmost caution, discipline, and adherence to established protocols.

“It is imperative that every personnel present today maintains a vigilant focus on safety procedures, ensuring that we conduct this exercise without incident or injury.

“Remember, the success of this exercise depends not only on our skills and accuracy, but also on our unwavering commitment to safety.

“Our goal today is to enhance our proficiency, readiness, and operational capability.”

Bura said that the skills they honed during the exercise were critical to their mission success and to the protection of the nation. He urged them to approach the exercise with the seriousness and dedication it demanded, knowing that their efforts would contribute to the greater good.
