The long anticipated Operation Atilogwu Udo has officially been flagged off by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai in Umuahia on Friday, while assuring that it has been renamed from Python Dance to assure of its Peaceful nature.
Represented by the Chief of Training and Operations, Nigerian Army, Major General Enobong Udoh, General Buratai said the exercise will be conducted simultaneously across the South Eastern states.
“The Exercise Atilogwu Udo 1 will last from first November to 23rd December 2019.
“It will be conducted simultaneously in South Eastern States to mitigate threats from criminal elements, peculiar with the region.
“All activities will be coordinated and monitored from the 82 Division Super Camp,” he said.
He explained that the exercise is to be conducted in collaboration with other security agencies to further strengthen cordial relationship with host communities include free medicals, educational support, sanitation exercises, rehabilitation of dilapidated roads and bridges in some communities.
He charged troops to be guided by code of conduct and rules of engagement.
“You must ensure that all law abiding citizens are properly protected, while criminals are dealt with decisively,” he stressed.
He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for his unflinching support to the Nigerian Army, while assuring the governments of the affected states that the officers and soldiers will be professional in the discharge of their duties
Traditional, religious leaders and security agencies were present at the flag off, which had Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu as Special Guest of Honour, represented by Deputy Governor, Right Honourable Udeh Ukochukwu.
