At the “Trash for Gas” initiative in Ikate/Elegushi, Lagos, Chief Olalekan Bakare gives a gas cylinder to a participant.

‘Trash for Gas,’ an environmental sustainability program of the Oba Saheed Elegushi Foundation, helped no fewer than 200 people in the Ikate/Elegushi area of Lagos State on Sunday.

The program, in collaboration with Smart Gas, is intended to uphold a sustainable society and clean environment, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Dr. Yinka Opeke, Chief Executive Officer of Smart Gas, addressed the recipients and explained that the goal of the campaign was to encourage the use of cooking gas as a safer substitute for kerosene, firewood, and charcoal.

“You are learning from us the value of residing in a more hygienic and livable environment.

In addition to having a detrimental effect on the environment because of emissions, using firewood and charcoal for cooking has an adverse effect on your health because women and children inhale the majority of the smoke.

“Today, the Oba has sponsored these cylinders after we presented our campaign to him. He believes it is appropriate to bring it to your home.

“A cleaner and healthier neighborhood will be yours after we trade your rubbish for our gas cylinders.

Opeke said, “I beg you, please, make good use of these cylinders.”

Chief Olalekan Bakare, the Aro Oba of Ikate/Elegushi, expressed his concern about climate change in his speech. He noted that the topic was especially important to his territory.

The main goal of the program, according to Bakare, is to guarantee a healthier and cleaner environment by encouraging community sanitation.

“Using wood to cook is not a healthy or sustainable way to cook.” Cooking with gas is cleaner.

“We’ll continue to campaign about the importance of keeping the environment clean, and Oba Elegushi will continue to support anything for a sustainable economy,” he declared.

The move was also praised by Mr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, who said that it would protect the environment.

This brings me and my family joy, said one beneficiary, Mrs. Idayat Onikoyi. We appreciate this gesture from Smart Gas and the Oba.

The traditional ruler was praised by Mrs. Kafayat Saulat, another beneficiary, for his initiative and other contributions to the community’s progress.

According to NAN, in exchange for each 3kg full gas cylinder, the homeowners received hand gloves, waste bags, and tools to gather and sort recyclables.
