Olaposi Sunday Oginni, a former chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Ogun state, was taken into custody by members of the Nigeria Police Force on suspicion of financial misappropriation, fraud, and money laundering. These allegations were made against Oginni.
According to the information that was gathered, Oginni, who was recently kicked out of the NNPP by the national leadership for alleged anti-party activities, fraud, and money laundering, was arrested in Abeokuta, the capital of the state of Ogun, on Tuesday by a team of crack detectives from Force Headquarters in Abuja. They initially detained him at the Lafenwa Police Station before transporting him to Abuja on Wednesday.
It is said that his arrest was the result of a petition that was submitted to the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba, on behalf of the Board of Trustees and active members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). The petition was sent by E.A. Igwe & Co, Barristers and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The petition with Ref EAV/MISC/05/1992/2023, dated 20th May, 2023, with the heading: ‘Call For The Arrest Of The Culprits And To Subject Them To The Full Wrath Of The Law’ states that, “We have been consulted and our legal services retained by the Trustees and active members of New Nigeria People Party, ( NNPP) (Hereinafter called our clients) and on whose definite and clear instruction we write you with respect to the above subject matter.
“We are informed by our Clients and we verily believe same that the relevant facts-in-issue are as stated hereunder for your perusal. We have included this for your consideration.
“It is our instruction that these perpetrators are hell-bent and had conspired amongst themselves to deliberately destabilise and frustrate the activities of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at the party secretariat situate and lying at No. 11 Mahatma Gandhi Street, Area 11, Garki Abuja, for no justifiable reason other than to project their evil plot by attacking the party secretariat. ”
“And maliciously damaged the glasses with the persistent threat of dealing with the members of the party and subjecting their lives to imminent danger caused by the mischief of the culprits, hence this petition,” “And maliciously damaged the glasses with the persistent threat of dealing with the members of the party and subjecting their lives to imminent danger.”
“We are also told that the first perpetrator, whose name is Oginni Sunday Olaposi, had in his possession N7.5 Million Cash, which he brazenly claimed was in his custody. Since this is a violation of the law of the land, this petition was created in response to this act.

“According to the information provided to us by our customers, the primary perpetrator and others were responsible for the theft of several millions of naira that belonged to the NNPP. This was accomplished through the use of a secret account that was opened specifically for the purpose of committing fraud and manipulation. The perpetrators of such behaviour are bringing the party formation to its knees, and they will not stop doing so unless they are taken into custody and made to face the full force of the law.
The primary offender has been indicted on charges of money laundering and will continue to engage in such brazen acts unless they are brought to justice and made to face the full force of the law.
“According to new information that has come to our attention, the perpetrators are also suspected of being involved in the illegal sale of firearms, the majority of which were used by them during the most recent election in a number of states, including Ogun state.
“The perpetrators are also being investigated for violating section 25 of the Money Laundering Act by providing financial support to terrorist organisations.
According to our most recent findings, the main suspect, Mr. Oginni, is responsible for stealing funds from a number of gubernatorial candidates who ran on the NNPP ticket in the most recent election, which took place in 2023 and was won by the NNPP, and a large number of victims are prepared to testify against him at the point of hearing. According to the information provided to us, the negative actions of these culprits had a significant impact on the activities of the new caretaker chairman of the NNPP party for Ogun state, who goes by the name of Prince Ibrahim Adekunle. If these culprits are not arrested, many things will go wrong within the party, which is why this petition has been created.
Because he was kicked out of the party, the primary suspect, Mr. Oginni, is said to have fraudulently removed party files, computers, and printers from the party’s office supply. It is believed that the same perpetrator opened a fraudulent suspicious account in the name of the NNPP without the consent of the Board of Trustees, made himself and the former treasurer signatories to the account, and received millions of naira from unsuspecting victims. This is a clear case of criminal deceit and criminal conversion of party funds.
“Our attention has also been drawn to the fact that because of the ill-gotten money in the custody of the culprit, to the detriment of the party, they diverted the said sum to the financing of terrorist activities in certain regions of the country and may not stop doing so unless they are arrested and interrogated properly. This is to the detriment of the party. The perpetrators of the mischief are striking fear into the hearts of our numerous customers, which is the impetus behind this petition.
“Our customers are in a hurry to bring this petition to your attention because the perpetrators are rumoured to have boasted to the hearing of a large number of people that they have the resources, including money and contacts, to sweep any complaint against them under the rug, regardless of the nature of the allegation or how serious the offence may be.
“We write on behalf of our client and to request that the culprits be arrested and subjected to the full wrath of the law. We ask that this action be taken as soon as possible.” We are depending on you.”
It was gathered that the men of crack detectives arrived in Abeokuta on the basis of this petition and arrested the alleged principal suspect, Olaposi Sunday Oginni, on Tuesday. They detained him at the Lafenwa Police station before he was whisked away to Abuja on Wednesday.

Speaking on the matter, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ogun State Command, Omolola Odutola, said she would not comment on the issue because Oginni was not arrested by men of Nigeria Police from Abeokuta, but rather from Abuja, and she noted that only the Police spokesman in Abuja can speak on the arrest. Omolola Odutola was speaking on behalf of the Ogun State Command.
