Victor Olaiya, the commissioner of Kwara State Police, paraded 14 suspected offenders who had been detained for a variety of offenses across the State on Wednesday.
Some of the suspects were detained for offenses connected to cults, while five others were taken into custody on charges of armed robbery.
Olaiya named Abdulsalam, Nurudeen Saka, and Segun Tata as three of the robbery suspects who robbed a woman at Egbejila in Ilorin while parading the accused criminals before the state police headquarters in Ilorin.
According to the CP, on September 5, 2023, at around 1600 hours, one Opadiran Yetunde (f) of Oke-Jia, Egbejila area of Ilorin, the state capital, reported the alleged robbery incidence.
According to Opadiran, at approximately 01:15 on August 5, 2023, four armed men broke into her home, taking N2 million worth of jewelry and iPhones. They also had her transfer N1.5 million to an account and drove off with her N6.672 million white Toyota Corolla.
Following an investigation, the car was found in Badagry, Lagos State, and the three people were taken into custody.
The commissioner of police revealed that during questioning, the three detained suspects admitted to the crime and named Morufu Oyekanmi, Ibikunle Shola, also known as Showboy, and Biodun Abolade Ojo, also known as Abbey, as members of their group. All three of these individuals are currently at large.
Until observant police officers conducting a stop and search operation along the Eiyekonrin/Ogbomoso highway on October 15, 2023, they were unable to apprehend Biodun Abolade and his associates in a commercial truck. Upon searching them, two war axes were discovered on them.
The police commissioner continued, “After extensive questioning, the three suspects admitted to being a syndicate that originated in Ibadan and Osun State and traveled from there to commit a number of robbery attacks, including robbing the complainant Opadiran at the Egbejila area and others within and around Ilorin, snatching vehicles and other valuables.”
Two more suspected prominent armed robbery suspects, Shittu Sheriff, popularly known as Abule, and Jamiu Idowu Aje, better known as Ijoba, were also taken into custody.
The CP claimed that they were taken into custody by a CID team working with vigilantes in Ilorin together with a blue Jincheng motorcycle that was unregistered, one expended cartridge, and a cut-to-size English-made double barrel rifle.
“The suspects admitted to a string of robberies during questioning, including the one that occurred at Isale-Koto of Ilorin on September 26, 2023, which resulted in the death of one Afeez Babatunde.”
“Three motorcycles that the gang utilized to kill two rival cultists, Gafar and Tunde, along the Gambari area of Ilorin metropolis, were also stolen by them,” he continued.
Police officers from the “D” Police Division in Adewole, Ilorin, also detained three other alleged cultists: Ahmed Umar, also known as Hollybea; Tunde Olarewaju Usman; and Kudus Ajao Okin.
Olaiya revealed that one of the suspects, Tunde Olarewaju, admitted to being an Aiye fraternity member and to having killed three members of the Eiye cult: Toheeb from the Omoda area of Ilorin and KC from the Soj street and Sawmill area of Ilorin. The third victim was mauled to death at the Lanre-Gada area, Sobi Road, also in the city of Ilorin.
