Meta Faults AI Translation That Misstated Karnataka CM’s Passing, Issues Apology

After one of its auto-translation tools inadvertently declared the passing of Siddaramaiah, an Indian politician and the current chief minister of Karnataka, the tech firm Meta issued an apology.
The mistake occurred when Siddaramaiah posted a Kannada-language Instagram message on Tuesday lamenting the death of famous Indian actress B. Saroja Devi.
The statement was incorrectly altered by the platform’s auto-translation technology to imply that Siddaramaiah had passed away.

Reports state that the chief minister had paid respects to the late actress after passing away, according to the faulty English translation.

On Thursday, Meta released a statement stating that the translation problem had been fixed.

The business guaranteed that the issue had been resolved and expressed regret for the error.

“We resolved a problem that momentarily resulted in this incorrect Kannada translation. “We regret that this occurred,” a Meta representative stated.

Siddaramaiah’s office took notice of the issue and voiced concerns about Meta’s auto-translation function, particularly for Kannada-language content.

His office wrote to the corporation that the tool’s translations were frequently inaccurate and occasionally quite deceptive.

They cautioned that such mistakes can cause misunderstandings, particularly when they impact government leaders’ public remarks.
