McPherson varsity lecturer gets research grant

A lecturer at the Department of Biological Sciences, McPherson University, Seriki, Sotayo, Ogun State, Dr Ayodeji Adigun, has been awarded a research grant by the Royal Society of Chemistry of the United Kingdom.

The one-year duration grant with an estimated value of £5,000 is intended to facilitate research to be carried out by Adigun, titled, ‘Prescription, non-prescription, and other personal healthcare products: An investigation into their environmental behaviour in Ondo State, Nigeria.’

Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, McPherson University, Sanmi Enigbokan, said in a release made available to the According.

According to the release, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof Francis Igbasan, congratulated Adigun on behalf of the university community for the academic feat and wished him a resounding success in the conduct of the research.

Also, the release stated that Adigun had previously been awarded an honorary appointment in 2019 as a Visiting Researcher/PhD Student at the School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy and Chemistry, Kingston University, London, the United Kingdom.

The scholar, according to the release, had equally won the ‘Researcher Development Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2023’, as well as the ‘Developing World Scholarship of the Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2019.

It added that In 2002, Adigun received the ‘Tugbuyele Prize’ for ‘The Best Graduating Student in Chemistry from his alma mater, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

Adigun bagged a Master of Science degree in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State in 2006, and a doctoral degree in Environmental Chemistry from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State in 2021.

The scholar’s research interests span Environmental Analysis, Chromatography, Mass Spectrometry, Data Analysis Software, among others.

Meanwhile, McPherson University, has deployed the McU Learning Management System for easier learning, teaching, and research.

A statement by the institution added that the McU-LMS would make learning, teaching, and research more flexible to both learners and lecturers with the use of modern ICT tools

The McPherson University Learning Management System gives students access to lecture materials and assignments, while lecturers interact with the students for further knowledge.

It stated that during a one-day pilot training organised by the University’s Information and Communication Technology and Resource Management Unit for staff of the College of Computing, the Acting Director, ICT-RMU, Dr Kayode Oladapo, said that the new teaching techniques would be user-friendly as various courses would be administered to one or more learners with ease.

While explaining the various links on the LMS platform to the participants, he mentioned that course registration, course allocation, uploading of course materials, recording of class activities, online assignments as well as computer-based tests for assessment could be done effortlessly on the platform.

It read, “With the new system, lecturers would need to configure their course allocations on the platform to make for easy teaching and interaction with the students.”

For easy usage of the LMS, it revealed that the university had subscribed to the Microsoft 365 Education Platform, which would enable staff and students to have access to 27 Microsoft applications free of charge.

It said, “This is coupled with the 100,000 licenses secured for staff, and 500,000 for students.”

“The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francis Igbasan, also approved that the training should be done across the board.”

The Acting Dean, College of Computing, Dr Olufunso Alowolodu, noted that the training would further expose the staff to new teaching techniques.
