Renowned human rights activist and President of Women Arise for Change Initiative and the Campaign for Democracy, Dr Joe Odumakin, has asked the government to listen to the #EndBadGovernance protesters’ demands and work towards meeting them.
She urged the leaders of all tiers and arms of government to address the issues of extreme poverty and bad governance.
In a statement on Saturday, titled, “A letter to the people on the end of the bad governance protest,” she thanked Nigerians for ‘standing up against oppression and demanding a better future for our nation,’ adding that their voice had been heard.
Speaking further, she said, “Those responsible for the looting and wanton destruction of lives and property should stop their nefarious activities.
“Such antiquated antics cannot work among a people united by political alienation and poverty.
“Let us work towards building a more inclusive Nigeria, where everyone can live without fear of persecution or discrimination based on primordial sentiments. Our diversity remains our strength and justifies why Nigeria has been the champion of peace and understanding continentally and globally.”
She urged security operatives to remain accountable and adhere to the letters of the constitution which provide for respect for fundamental human rights.
“We urge leaders of all tiers and arms of the government to listen to the citizens’ demands and take concrete steps to address the issues of extreme poverty and bad governance.
“The people have spoken, and it’s time for positive changes to be effected. Remember, the power of the people is greater than the people in power. Let’s work together towards a more just and equitable society for all,” she added.
