Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the National Publicity Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has voiced worries over PDP governors defecting to the APC, arguing that it represents a step toward dictatorship in Nigeria.
He said in an interview with the Daily Sun that he is not shocked by the numerous defections and that Nigeria is progressively becoming more dictatorial.
“I am not really surprised about the development, though of course it is at the level of speculation,” Muhammad-Baba said. The governor of Delta has deserted. However, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal told us two days ago that he is still a PDP governor. Let’s wait and see what occurs.
It’s not shocking. We have been advancing towards tyranny not only in the process of government but also in the structure of political parties. Remember that the PDP has been stifling since the election in 2023. There are disagreements within the party, and some members have sided with the APC. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, for example, stated that although he is a member of the PDP, he obviously identifies more with the APC than the APC members do.

Muhammad-Baba noted, “The government is marshalling all resources at its disposal towards the election,” highlighting the mounting urgency for the 2027 polls. With the promise of automatic tickets, it is forcing or influencing governors and other political figures to back the government and some lawmakers to rejoin the APC.
“If only they will be allowed to have their way, which is increasingly looking remote,” he said, while emphasizing that the people should determine the conclusion. Therefore, in my opinion, we should wait and see. What haven’t we seen yet? It’s happening right now and might keep happening. This political development is depressing.
