Lagos joins forces with a US corporation to investigate the $50 billion global solar sector

The Lagos State Government is collaborating with the International Information Technology and Application Solar (IITA-Solar) of the United States to investigate opportunities in the $50 billion global solar market, which has the potential to create millions of new jobs and businesses. According to reports, the sector employed 11.5 million people worldwide last year.

Mrs Yetunde Arobieke, the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, said during the launch of the global certification on solar technology training for unemployed youths in Lagos that renewable energy has continued to bring socio-economic benefits by creating numerous jobs and business opportunities around the world, and that the government was ready to build youths’ capacities.

With rising energy demand, the Lagos administration would foster youth entrepreneurship and take initiatives to use local capabilities to harness the city’s renewable potential for industrial development, according to the Commissioner.

According to her, establishing a coherent policy framework that drives the energy transition has resulted in significantly bigger employment growth in renewables around the world.

She stated that the collaboration with IITA-Solar sought to provide training for a global certification in solar technology, while NABCEP will equip participants with the skills needed to install and operate generation systems such solar farms with voltages up to 16,000 volts and transformers.

She estimated that 280 young people would benefit from the training, which would include everything from solar energy to solar panel installation. It consists of both classroom and hands-on instruction.

The graduates, she claims, will be skilled and accredited solar PV design and installation professionals.

She went on to say that they would have the confidence and connections to succeed in the rapidly increasing renewable energy market.

According to her, the global energy market is speeding up, as is the unrelenting shift to renewable energy.

Toks Onabanjo, IITA Edu’s Program Coordinator, stated that solar power generation has emerged as one of the most attractive industries due to the rapid acceptance of alternative energy generation capacities.

According to him, this has sped up the market’s expansion.

According to him, the deployment of distributed solar PV systems in households, as well as commercial and industrial buildings, appears to be a growing market segment around the world, with young people benefiting from it.

He described the training as a terrific way for young people to get jobs and create new enterprises in future solar projects.

Meanwhile, the global solar panel industry is predicted to soar to more than $130 billion by 2030, owing to a global move toward renewable energy.
