Labour Party knocks Tinubu over ministerial list

The first group of ministerial nominees announced by the Senate on Thursday have President Bola Tinubu in the dust, according to the Labour Party leadership.

‘Recycled, spent forces and anti-democratic elements’ were described by the LP as making up the group of ministerial nominees.

Following the nominations’ announcement, there have been differing reactions, with some detractors lamenting the absence of the eagerly awaited “technocrats” on the eagerly awaited list.

On social media, a large number of young Nigerians have questioned the list as well, claiming that the politicians who made it were only honored for their contributions to the previous election.

Nasir el-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, as well as the nominees from the states of Ebonyi, Jigawa, and Rivers—Dave Umahi, Badaru Abubakar, and Nyesom Wike—were among the candidates.

APC National Women Leader Betta Edu and deputy spokesperson for the disbanded Tinubu-Shettima Campaign Council Hannatu Musawa were among the seven women on the list, which also included the only female candidate for the APC presidential nomination at the most recent convention, Uju Ohanenye.

However, submitting a ministerial nominees list piecemeal, as the president did on Thursday, is against the Electoral Act, according to a statement made in Abuja on Sunday by the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh.

Ifoh added that instead of the energetic youths and result-driven technocrats that had been promised earlier, Nigerians saw a recycling of some “failed and clueless politicians” on the list of ministers.

“Some of these nominees played prominent anti-democratic roles in the previous administration, particularly since 2015, which saw the APC government break all of its promises to Nigerians,” he said. We also witnessed “Prebendal” politics in full force, whereby the APC national leader’s cronies and lackeys were primarily chosen to receive rewards for subservience and blind devotion.

The enormous pool of skills, potential, and resources that Nigeria is known for are in no way represented by this list. We are still perplexed as to why this government chose to appoint ineffective individuals who have failed Nigeria in the past rather than utilizing the plethora of young and technocratic talent.

“A quick glance at the list reveals the absence of technocrats who typically form the core of any given government’s policy implementers. Sadly, in their place are fawning politicians who may not be of any assistance in the necessary efforts to save and reposition the country.”

The LP spokesman also expressed disappointment that the president decided to announce his ministerial nominees in batches rather than presenting the entire list within 60 days.

He asserted that assembling a cabinet took no more than 60 days in any serious government.

We are concerned once more about the ministerial list’s fragmentary presentation. Every one of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory must have at least one minister appointed from them, according to the country’s constitution. An additional requirement of the Electoral Act as amended is that, within 60 days of the start of a government, a list of ministerial nominees must be sent to the Senate for review and confirmation. However, what we saw was a list that had been hastily put together and that didn’t include nominations from about 10 states, clearly breaking the law.

It takes a serious government a fair amount of time to assemble its executive team, like sixty days. Because Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been battling for the presidency for more than 20 years, he should have been able to identify and select a strong team across the nation who are qualified to serve in ministerial positions by now. This development, however, appears even more absurd in light of the fact that we know this. This, however, has not taken place.

“Given what we are witnessing, one wonders how long it would have taken the APC leadership to form the government if it weren’t for the Electoral Act, which requires a government to submit a ministerial list within 60 days. This is because the previous APC administration in 2015 took more than six months to appoint its ministers, the speaker said.
