Keyamo summons heads of aviation agencies over safety concerns

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has called a meeting of the leaders of aviation regulatory bodies due to safety concerns in the industry.

The minister stated that during the meeting, a comprehensive evaluation of recent occurrences will be conducted.

Due to bad weather, United Nigeria Airlines recently had to reroute its flight from Lagos to Abuja to Asaba, the capital of Delta State.

On Sunday, or yesterday, the aircraft NUA 0504 departed from Terminal 2 of the Muritala Muhammed International Airport with a destination of Abuja.

Nevertheless, there was significant misunderstanding among the passengers when the captain grounded the aircraft at the Asaba International Airport.

“In light of public safety concerns regarding aviation, I have invited the heads of regulatory agencies to my office later today to review the incidents that gave rise to these concerns, make sure the necessary measures are taken to prevent future occurrences, and apply sanctions as needed regarding the past incidents,” tweeted Keyamo.

Less than a day after the article with the headline “Risky voyage: Passengers fret over increasing runway slips, crash-landings,” the minister has summoned the passengers.

The report reflected the terrifying experiences of passengers who had just managed to escape incidents including runway excursions, crash landings, and related slips.

It also disclosed the apprehensions of several aviation stakeholders and the obstacles encountered by the industry concerning infrastructure, administration, and navigational safety, among other aspects.

Two international airports in the nation saw three runway excursions in a span of 14 days.

At least ten occurrences have been documented so far this year.
