The Kebbi State Commissioner for Higher Education, Isah Abdullahi-Tunga, has lauded the Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, for approving over N967 million for the payment of indigenous students’ registration fees across Nigeria.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, the commissioner said, “Yesterday, March 20, 2024, His Excellency, Dr. Nasir Idris approved the sponsorship of 20,908 Kebbi State students in 36 tertiary institutions across the country.”
Abdullahi-Tunga described the governor’s generosity as a testimony to his mission and vision to mentor the youths towards repositioning them to become sound and excellent future leaders.
He said, “In view of the above and in line with His Excellency’s vision and mission in transforming higher education in the state, and his determination to ensure that the youths benefit in the agenda of the current political dispensation by sponsoring students within and outside the country for the educational development of the state, His Excellency has, therefore, graciously approved the sum of N967,685,854 million being fees for the 20,908 students for the year 2022/2023 academic session.”
While applauding the governor for the kind gesture, the commissioner observed that such magnanimity would translate to building a solid foundation for the youths towards instituting a new dawn of leadership.
Commenting on foreign students, the commissioner lamented that most of them sent abroad to study were studying courses that are presently available in Nigeria.
He suggested that students should only be sent abroad to study courses that are not readily available in Nigerian universities, adding that there was no wisdom in sponsoring students to go outside and read courses available in the country.
On Thursday, the state governor began the distribution of over N12 billion worth of assorted grains as Ramadan palliatives to residents.
From the Ramadan palliatives, 9,900 bags of rice and 9,500 bags of grains would go to teachers, 4,000 bags of rice and 3,400 bags of grains would go to the state’s ministries, departments and agencies while 1,000 bags of rice and 1,000 bags of grains would go to Islamic scholars, among others.
