As part of its increased efforts to prevent auto theft in the state, the Kano State Police Command has recovered an abandoned Rav-4 motor vehicle and arrested a suspected car thief.

This was said in a statement released by Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Police Public Relations Officer, on January 6, 2025.

The statement claims that on December 28, 2024, the State Criminal Investigation Department’s (SCID) Anti-Car Theft Unit found the ash-colored Rav-4, registered under the license plate YAB 881 JK (Abuja), abandoned while on patrol along Kwanar Ungogo in the Ungogo Local Government Area.
The main suspect, 40-year-old Bala Sani of Katsina State’s Funtua Local Government Area, was captured on January 4, 2025, at his home in Kwado Quarters, Katsina LGA, after initial investigations.

The suspect admitted to planning with a co-conspirator to take the car from Zaria, Kaduna State, according to the police.

He said that he intended to sell the car when he drove it to Kano. But when he saw police officers close to Ungogo Junction, he got out of the car and ran away to his hometown, the police said.

The inquiry is still underway, and the recovered car is presently in police custody.

“After our investigation is complete, the suspect will face charges in court,” stated Police Public Relations Officer SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa.

We urge every household to utilize the NPF Rescue Me App, which is accessible on the Play Store, or to report any suspicious activity to the closest police station. We can guarantee our communities’ safety and security if we work together,” he stated.
