Kano judgment: Compromised judiciary is harmful – Bode George

The courts’ ruling to overturn politicians’ election victories has been denounced by Chief Olabode George, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

George was responding to the debate stemming from the Kano State Appeal Court’s decision.

Remember how the appeal court ruled that Gawuna had won the state’s gubernatorial election, nullifying Kano State’s election of Governor Abba Yusuf.
But when the Certified True Copy, or CTC, of the ruling revealed that Yusuf had been confirmed as Kano governor by the Appeal Court, confusion ensued.

But clerical error was the reason given by the Appeal Court for the disparity.

George responded by expressing concern over Nigerians’ lack of faith in the legal system.

“This system is worrisome because if the people don’t believe in the third arm of government anymore, anarchy looms,” the PDP chieftain stated Thursday during a news conference in Lagos.

The danger to our democracy posed by certain politicians’ and judges’ unholy partnerships is evident. It will only take three, five, or seven judges to overturn the will of the people when millions of people turn out on election day, wait, pick up ballots, and cast their votes for the candidates they support. when the results are declared, everyone will celebrate.

In politically charged situations, the judiciary’s best course of action is to rule, and in cases where there are disagreements, to rerun the case without awarding a victory to any party.

It is incorrect for the judges to declare the winners and to take away the people’s ability to choose their political representatives. For Nigeria, this is not ideal. Our electoral system will suffer as a result. It is hazardous to have a corrupt judiciary.
