Anyim greets women on International Women’s Day and urges the National Assembly of States to reconsider gender bills that were previously rejected.

Senator Anyim pius Anyim, a frontline presidential candidate in 2023, congratulated women on their numerous contributions to the nation’s development on International Women’s Day. Anyim lamented the under-representation of women in politics and governance, particularly in Nigeria, in his message of solidarity and support.

Former Senate President Anyim has urged the National Assembly to reconsider the rejected bills on women’s and gender-related issues in order to pass them into law.

If he is elected President of Nigeria in 2023, he has also promised to champion women’s equality.

Anyim stated,

“On this auspicious occasion of International Women’s Day (IWD), as the world stands up for women, I join all men of goodwill in celebrating our women for all they do to maintain the balance of human society.”

I’m sorry to say that our Nigerian women will be celebrating International Women’s Day this year with a deep sense of disappointment and anger, as a result of the rejection of women/gender-related bills at the National Assembly’s constitution amendment hearings last week.

“From what I understand, the normal legislative procedures were followed, but the bills did not receive the required number of votes to pass.” However, it’s a pity that those bills were turned down.” We must look beyond processes and procedures to take actions and decisions that will engender stability and progress in our society on issues that are critical to our country’s peace, development, and harmony, such as giving our women a sense of worth, belonging, confidence, and inclusion.

Nigerian women make up only 29 of the 469 members of the Nigerian National Assembly, despite a population of over 104 million (49.32 percent of Nigeria’s population in 2021). When dealing with national issues, especially those that affect women and children, this is woefully inadequate to represent women’s views and put their voices on the table.” “Without inclusivity, we will not be able to make the progress we desire in our efforts to build a nation.”

We must resolve the issue of gender balance and women’s inclusion in governance through deliberate actions and policies. As a result, I vehemently support Nigerian women’s demand for more equitable and fair representation in all levels of government.

“As a demonstration of our love for, and appreciation for, Nigerian women’s invaluable contributions to the country’s peace, progress, development, and stability, the National Assembly must revisit the rejected women/gender-related bills as a matter of urgent national importance to give our women the confidence and sense of belonging they need to continue to serve our country and humanity at large in the manner they have always done.” “We don’t have to wait for women to take over the National Assembly before we act,” the Peoples Democratic Party candidate stated. “Let me assure our hardworking and patriotic Nigeria women that I recognise the important role they play in stabilizing the society,” Anyim said when asked how he would treat women if he became President of Nigeria.

“I value their invaluable contributions to our country’s development, but most importantly, I value them as indispensable partners in nation-building.” When I am given the opportunity to serve our great country as president by God’s grace and the will of all Nigerians, Nigerian women will have their rightful place of pride in the administration I will lead. Anyim concluded, “Wishing our women a Happy International Women’s Day 2022.”
