Nigerian students trapped in Sudan are subject of FG action

While the deadly fighting in the nation of Sudan continues, Nigerian students are still stranded there.

40 buses are reportedly on the ground and ready to transport students from Khartoum to Cairo as plans are being made to evacuate about 5,500 Nigerians who are stuck in Sudan via the Egyptian town of Luxor, according to reports that the Federal Government has made public.

In order to guarantee the safe transfer of the stranded Nigerians, the Nigerian government has asked Egypt for assistance.

In a letter dated April 23, 2023, and signed by the Charge d’Affaires, Haruna Garko, the Embassy of Nigeria in Sudan made a formal request for buses to transport students from Khartoum to Cairo on Tuesday at 6 am.

I am directed to request your 200-seater buses’ services to transport 3500 Nigerian students from Khartoum to Cairo, Egypt, on April 25, 2023, at 6 a.m.

This action is being taken as nationals of other foreign nations rush to leave Sudan amid the ongoing, deadly fighting between forces loyal to two opposing generals.

While millions of terrified residents have sought refuge inside their homes, many of whom are running low on basic necessities like water and food, many foreigners have fled the nation’s capital city of Khartoum in a lengthy United Nations convoy. Since April 15, army and paramilitary forces have been fighting fiercely in the streets of the five million-person city, leaving behind burned tanks, demolished structures, and looted stores.

According to Umar Abubakar, president of the Jigawa State Students Association in Sudan, “we are yet to move.”
