As Nigerians join the rest of the world in commemorating International Men’s Day this year, health experts have advised couples to avoid having children they cannot support.
Every November 19, International Men’s Day is observed to honor positive male role models and increase awareness of men’s issues.

Many children are still victims of various forms of abuse, such as child marriages, sexual violence, abduction of children, molestation, child labor, and neglect, because their parents do not adequately provide for them, according to some health experts speaking at a one-day rally organized by Marie Stopes Nigeria to sensitize men on the importance of family planning.
Following the growing expense of living in contemporary Nigeria, Dr. Kingsley Odogwu, a vasectomy surgeon, warned newsmen that parents must take the problem of family planning seriously.
Women, according to Odogwu, are the ones who bore the burden of contraceptive techniques (including oral pills), implants, and intrauterine devices, among other things, when it comes to avoiding pregnancy.

He saw that the percentage of males who get a vasectomy is still relatively low, as is their awareness of the procedure.
“Instead of women having an operation solely to prevent a pregnancy from arising,” Odogwu pointed out, “it is easier and far cheaper for males to have a vasectomy.”
“It’s a treatment that can be completed in less than 15 minutes,” he says. This technique has no effect on erection, and sexual urge is as strong as it should be.”
Other specialists who spoke at the demonstration, including Anne Taiwo and Effiom Effiom, Country Director of Marie Stopes Nigeria, say it is wrong for parents to continue to create children they cannot care for.
