INEC yet to complete the renovation of its Awka office due to unknown gunmen

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is still repairing damage to its Awka office, which was attacked by unidentified gunmen in May.

The governorship election in Anambra, scheduled for November 6, is now less than two months away.

Festus Okoye, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, issued a statement on Thursday providing an update.

In terms of non-sensitive materials, Okoye stated that INEC would dispatch materials from its Awka office rather than the previously stated Owerri office.

“The physical facility was severely damaged. The destruction of movable materials, including half of the non-sensitive materials already delivered, was also a success.

In order to meet our deadlines, we decided to distribute non-sensitive materials from our South East Zonal Stores in Owerri,” he said.

Hand sanitizers, face masks, envelopes, posters, stickers, sellotape, scissors, and liquid gum were among the non-pharmaceutical COVID-19 items he listed.

INEC’s plan to keep election materials in Imo was opposed by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

After reviewing the deadline for the work on the destroyed Awka office, Okoye stated that INEC is confident that it will be completed by the end of September.

He confirmed that non-sensitive materials would be batched and distributed from the facility.

The commission urged all parties involved to keep cooperating and work toward a credible election in Anambra.
