In the wake of President Muhammadu Buhari’s move into the Glass House at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, preparations for the inauguration of Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, have kicked into high gear. Tinubu will take office on May 29, 2019.
During the period of transition from one presidency to the next, it is believed that the former president and his or her spouse have made use of the historic residence as a temporary residence.
The Glass House has also traditionally played an important part in the transition of power by serving as a symbolic and practical space for the outgoing president and their spouse to reside in during their time in the White House.
After giving Senator Remi Tinubu, who will become the next First Lady of Nigeria, a tour of the State House, the current First Lady, Aisha Buhari, revealed this information in a video that she posted to her Instagram page.

Since only Aisha Buhari and her husband currently reside there, the outgoing first lady expressed her opinion that the house should continue its time-honored tradition of only housing the incumbent president and their spouse during the period of transition.
During the tour, Aisha Buhari took Senator Remi Tinubu to various parts of the house and provided him with in-depth explanations about the significance and history of each area they visited.
She stated, “I have shown Senator Remi Tinubu, who will serve as the new First Lady, around. She has already been to the main house; at this point, we are at the well-known glass house. The Glass House serves as a temporary residence for the president-elect after their term in office has ended.
“I’m advising that the Glass House should continue to uphold its tradition of serving as a transition for the president who is leaving office. My husband and I have made our home in this location at the moment that we are having this conversation with you. There are only two of us here, and I believe that this should continue to be the case as a standard both for this institution and for this house.
As a result of the event, Senator Tinubu was left feeling humbled and impressed at the same time. She was able to take in an overwhelming amount of information in a relatively short amount of time.
