In Katsina, bandits assassinate two immigration officials

Two Nigeria Immigration Service officers were killed by bandits in the early hours of Thursday (NIS).

Around 12:05 a.m., they attacked Kadobe village in Katsina State’s Jibia Local Government Area.

Umar Bagadaza Kankara and Lawali Dutse were the officers killed.

A gunfight erupted between immigration officials and bandits, according to a Nation correspondent.

Hundreds of bandits are said to have been killed, while others have been wounded by gunshots.

Gunshot wounds to the thigh were also sustained by a soldier who was among the reinforcements sent to the area.

He was reportedly being treated at Katsina’s Federal Medical Centre.

On the condition of anonymity, one of the immigration officers told The Nation that the service has a base in the village where the incident occurred.

He revealed that the area was usually regarded as a safe haven for herders and their livestock.

“The herders had brought their cattle there for pasture and security,” he explained, noting that Immigration has a base there as well.
“However, the bandits decided to attack the location last night after several previous attempts had failed.

“People in the neighborhood said they saw strange faces lurking around the area the evening of the incident, but they refused to notify security about the situation”.

“When the bandits attacked, they began shooting at our men in sporadic bursts, and our men returned the fire. They assassinated two of our men, but we assassinated several of theirs as well.’

“Several of the bandits were shot and managed to flee with the bodies of their killed comrades, as well as rustle cows belonging to the herdsmen.
