In a Mali bus and truck crash, 41 people were killed

During heavy rains in central Mali on Tuesday, a bus collided with a lorry, killing 41 people and injuring 33 more, according to the government.

In the former French colony, such accidents are common, and the poor state of the roads has been a source of social tension.

The dead included a baby, according to Transport Minister Dembele Madina Sissoko, after a passenger bus collided with a lorry carrying agricultural produce near Segou.

He emphasized that the figure was provisional and blamed bad weather.

According to Sissoko, three of the injured were seriously hurt.

The government initially stated on social media that 37 people were killed in the Zambougou accident, but did not elaborate on the circumstances.

The crash, according to Alassane Traore, governor of the Segou region, which includes Zambougou, “is the result of driving in the rain.”

“Visibility was poor and the road was wet due to the heavy rain,” a crash survivor said, adding that the truck failed to brake in time.

The government will investigate the incident, according to the transport minister.

He said, “May Allah welcome the souls of the deceased to paradise.”

In the landlocked Sahel nation of 20 million people, road travel is still the primary mode of transportation for people and goods.
